[1]PETER, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen ones and pilgrims, scattered throughout Pontus, Ga-la'tia, Cap-pado'cia, Asia Minor and Bi-thyn'i-a, [1]Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the choice sojourners of the dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
[2]Who have been chosen by the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, to be obedient and to sprinkle the blood of our LORD Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace, be multiplied. [2]according to a foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, to obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied!
[3]Blessed be God, the Father of our LORD Jesus Christ, who by his abundant mercy has again renewed us spiritually to a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [3]Blessed [is] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to the abundance of His kindness did beget us again to a living hope, through the rising again of Jesus Christ out of the dead,
[4]To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, that does not fade away, and is prepared in heaven for you, [4]to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and unfading, reserved in the heavens for you,
[5]While you are kept by the power of God through faith, for the life eternal which is ready to be revealed at the last time. [5]who, in the power of God are being guarded, through faith, unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time,
[6]Wherein you will rejoice for ever, though at present you are sorrowful for a while, through diverse trials which have come upon you: [6]in which ye are glad, a little now, if it be necessary, being made to sorrow in manifold trials,
[7]So that the proof of your faith, being much more precious than refined gold which has been purified by fire, may be made manifest for the glory and honour and praise at the appearing of Jesus Christ, [7]that the proof of your faith -- much more precious than of gold that is perishing, and through fire being approved -- may be found to praise, and honour, and glory, in the revelation of Jesus Christ,
[8]Whom you have not seen, but whom you yet love, and in whose faith you rejoice with exceeding joy that cannot be described; [8]whom, not having seen, ye love, in whom, now not seeing and believing, ye are glad with joy unspeakable and glorified,
[9]And you will receive the reward for your faith, even the salvation of your souls. [9]receiving the end of your faith -- salvation of souls;
[10]For which very salvation the prophets searched diligently when they prophesied concerning the grace which was to be given to you. [10]concerning which salvation seek out and search out did prophets who concerning the grace toward you did prophecy,
[11]They searched to find out at what time it would be revealed, and the Spirit of Christ which dwelt in them testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. [11]searching in regard to what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ that was in them was manifesting, testifying beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory after these,
[12]And everything they were searching for was revealed to them because they did not seek for their own benefit, but they prophesied the things which concerned us, the things which now have been revealed to you by those who have preached the gospel to you through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven; which things the angels also desire to look into. [12]to whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to us they were ministering these, which now were told to you (through those who did proclaim good news to you,) in the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, to which things messengers do desire to bend looking.
[13]Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be wide awake, and hope for the joy that is coming to you at the revelation of our LORD Jesus Christ; [13]Wherefore having girded up the loins of your mind, being sober, hope perfectly upon the grace that is being brought to you in the revelation of Jesus Christ,
[14]Like obedient children, not partakers again in those sinful desires for which you once lusted in your ignorance: [14]as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves to the former desires in your ignorance,
[15]But be you holy in all your conduct, as he who has called you is holy; [15]but according as He who did call you [is] holy, ye also, become holy in all behaviour,
[16]Because it is written, Be you holy, even as I am holy. [16]because it hath been written, `Become ye holy, because I am holy;'
[17]And if you call on the Father, who is impartial and who judges every man according to his works, conduct yourselves reverently during the time of your sojourning here: [17]and if on the Father ye do call, who without acceptance of persons is judging according to the work of each, in fear the time of your sojourn pass ye,
[18]Knowing that you have not been redeemed from your empty works which you have received from your fathers by corruptible silver and gold; [18]having known that, not with corruptible things -- silver or gold -- were ye redeemed from your foolish behaviour delivered by fathers,
[19]But with the precious blood of the Lamb without blemish and without spot which is Christ: [19]but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and unspotted -- Christ's --
[20]Who verily was foreordained for this very purpose, before the foundation of the world, and was manifest in these last times, for your sakes, [20]foreknown, indeed, before the foundation of the world, and manifested in the last times because of you,
[21]Who by him do believe in God, who raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might rest on God. [21]who through him do believe in God, who did raise out of the dead, and glory to him did give, so that your faith and hope may be in God.
[22]Let your souls be sanctified by obedience to the truth, and be filled with sincere love, so that you may love one another with pure and perfect hearts: [22]Your souls having purified in the obedience of the truth through the Spirit to brotherly love unfeigned, out of a pure heart one another love ye earnestly,
[23]Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides for ever. [23]being begotten again, not out of seed corruptible, but incorruptible, through a word of God -- living and remaining -- to the age;
[24]For all flesh is as grass, and all its glory is as the flower of the field. The grass withers and the flower fades away: [24]because all flesh [is] as grass, and all glory of man as flower of grass; wither did the grass, and the flower of it fell away,
[25]But the word of our God endures for ever. And this is the very word which has been preached to you. [25]and the saying of the Lord doth remain -- to the age; and this is the saying that was proclaimed good news to you.
