[1]And the ZiphitesH2130 cameH935[H8799] unto SaulH7586 to GibeahH1390, sayingH559[H8800], Doth not DavidH1732 hideH5641[H8693] himself in the hillH1389 of HachilahH2444, which is beforeH6440 JeshimonH3452? [1]Again the Ziphims came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah before Jeshimon?
[2]Then SaulH7586 aroseH6965[H8799], and went downH3381[H8799] to the wildernessH4057 of ZiphH2128, having threeH7969 thousandH505 chosenH977[H8803] menH376 of IsraelH3478 with him, to seekH1245[H8763] DavidH1732 in the wildernessH4057 of ZiphH2128. [2]Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, for to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
[3]And SaulH7586 pitchedH2583[H8799] in the hillH1389 of HachilahH2444, which is beforeH6440 JeshimonH3452, by the wayH1870. But DavidH1732 abodeH3427[H8802] in the wildernessH4057, and he sawH7200[H8799] that SaulH7586 cameH935[H8804] afterH310 him into the wildernessH4057. [3]And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon by the wayside. Now David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.
[4]DavidH1732 therefore sent outH7971[H8799] spiesH7270[H8764], and understoodH3045[H8799] that SaulH7586 was comeH935[H8804] in very deedH3559.[H8737] [4](For David had sent out spies, and understood, that Saul was come in very deed)
[5]And DavidH1732 aroseH6965[H8799], and cameH935[H8799] to the placeH4725 where SaulH7586 had pitchedH2583[H8804]: and DavidH1732 beheldH7200[H8799] the placeH4725 where SaulH7586 layH7901[H8804], and AbnerH74 the sonH1121 of NerH5369, the captainH8269 of his hostH6635: and SaulH7586 layH7901[H8802] in the trenchH4570, and the peopleH5971 pitchedH2583[H8802] round about himH5439. [5]Then David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched, and when David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner which was his chief captain, (for Saul lay in the fort, and the people pitched round about him)
[6]Then answeredH6030[H8799] DavidH1732 and saidH559[H8799] to AhimelechH288 the HittiteH2850, and to AbishaiH52 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870, brotherH251 to JoabH3097, sayingH559[H8800], Who will go downH3381[H8799] with me to SaulH7586 to the campH4264? And AbishaiH52 saidH559[H8799], I will go downH3381 with theeH8799. [6]Then spake David, and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the host? Then Abishai said, I will go down with thee.
[7]So DavidH1732 and AbishaiH52 cameH935[H8799] to the peopleH5971 by nightH3915: and, behold, SaulH7586 layH7901[H8802] sleepingH3463 within the trenchH4570, and his spearH2595 stuckH4600[H8803] in the groundH776 at his bolsterH4763: but AbnerH74 and the peopleH5971 layH7901[H8802] round about himH5439. [7]So David and Abishai came down to the people by night: and behold, Saul lay sleeping within the fort, and his spear did stick in the ground at his head: and Abner and the people lay round about him.
[8]Then saidH559[H8799] AbishaiH52 to DavidH1732, GodH430 hath deliveredH5462[H8765] thine enemyH341[H8802] into thine handH3027 this dayH3117: now therefore let me smiteH5221[H8686] him, I pray thee, with the spearH2595 even to the earthH776 at onceH6471[H259], and I will not smite him the second timeH8138.[H8799] [8]Then said Abishai to David, God hath closed thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore, I pray thee, let me smite him once with a spear to the earth, and I will not smite him again.
[9]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] to AbishaiH52, DestroyH7843[H8686] him not: for who can stretch forthH7971[H8804] his handH3027 against the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899, and be guiltlessH5352?[H8738] [9]And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can lay his hand on the Lord's anointed, and be guiltless?
[10]DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] furthermore, As the LORDH3068 livethH2416, the LORDH3068 shall smiteH5062[H8799] him; or his dayH3117 shall comeH935[H8799] to dieH4191[H8804]; or he shall descendH3381[H8799] into battleH4421, and perishH5595.[H8738] [10]Moreover David said, As the Lord liveth, either the Lord shall smite him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall descend into battle, and perish.
[11]The LORDH3068 forbidH2486 that I should stretch forthH7971[H8800] mine handH3027 against the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899: but, I pray thee, takeH3947[H8798] thou now the spearH2595 that is at his bolsterH4763, and the cruseH6835 of waterH4325, and let us goH3212.[H8799] [11]The Lord keep me from laying mine hand upon the Lord's anointed: but, I pray thee, take now the spear that is at his head, and the pot of water, and let us go hence.
[12]So DavidH1732 tookH3947[H8799] the spearH2595 and the cruseH6835 of waterH4325 from Saul'sH7586 bolsterH7226; and they gat them awayH3212[H8799], and no man sawH7200[H8802] it, nor knewH3045[H8802] it, neither awakedH6974[H8688]: for they were all asleepH3463; because a deep sleepH8639 from the LORDH3068 was fallenH5307 upon themH8804. [12]So David took the spear and the pot of water from Saul's head, and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor marked it, neither did any awake, but they were all asleep: for the Lord had sent a dead sleep upon them.
[13]Then DavidH1732 went overH5674[H8799] to the other sideH5676, and stoodH5975[H8799] on the topH7218 of an hillH2022 afar offH7350; a greatH7227 space being between themH4725: [13]Then David went unto the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off, a great space being between them.
[14]And DavidH1732 criedH7121[H8799] to the peopleH5971, and to AbnerH74 the sonH1121 of NerH5369, sayingH559[H8800], AnswerestH6030[H8799] thou not, AbnerH74? Then AbnerH74 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], Who art thou that criestH7121[H8804] to the kingH4428? [14]And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Hearest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered, and said, Who art thou that cryest to the king?
[15]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] to AbnerH74, Art not thou a valiant manH376? and who is like to thee in IsraelH3478? wherefore then hast thou not keptH8104[H8804] thy lordH113 the kingH4428? for there cameH935[H8804] oneH259 of the peopleH5971 in to destroyH7843[H8687] the kingH4428 thy lordH113. [15]And David said to Abner, Art not thou a man? And who is like thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? For there came one of the folk in to destroy the king thy lord.
[16]This thingH1697 is not goodH2896 that thou hast doneH6213[H8804]. As the LORDH3068 livethH2416, ye are worthyH1121 to dieH4194, because ye have not keptH8104[H8804] your masterH113, the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899. And now seeH7200[H8798] where the king'sH4428 spearH2595 is, and the cruseH6835 of waterH4325 that was at his bolsterH4763. [16]This is not well done of thee: as the Lord liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master the Lord's anointed: and now see where the king's spear is, and the pot of water that was at his head.
[17]And SaulH7586 knewH5234[H8686] David'sH1732 voiceH6963, and saidH559[H8799], Is this thy voiceH6963, my sonH1121 DavidH1732? And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799], It is my voiceH6963, my lordH113, O kingH4428. [17]And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord O king.
[18]And he saidH559[H8799], Wherefore doth my lordH113 thus pursueH7291[H8802] afterH310 his servantH5650? for what have I doneH6213[H8804]? or what evilH7451 is in mine handH3027? [18]And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus persecute his servant? for what have I done? Or what evil is in mine hand?
[19]Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lordH113 the kingH4428 hearH8085[H8799] the wordsH1697 of his servantH5650. If the LORDH3068 have stirred thee upH5496[H8689] against me, let him acceptH7306[H8686] an offeringH4503: but if they be the childrenH1121 of menH120, cursedH779[H8803] be they beforeH6440 the LORDH3068; for they have drivenH1644[H8765] me out this dayH3117 from abidingH5596[H8692] in the inheritanceH5159 of the LORDH3068, sayingH559[H8800], GoH3212[H8798], serveH5647[H8798] otherH312 godsH430. [19]Now therefore, I beseech thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him smell the savor of a sacrifice: but if the children of men have done it, cursed be they before the Lord: for they have cast me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go, serve other gods.
[20]Now therefore, let not my bloodH1818 fallH5307[H8799] to the earthH776 before the faceH6440 of the LORDH3068: for the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 is come outH3318[H8804] to seekH1245[H8763] aH259 fleaH6550, as when one doth huntH7291[H8799] a partridgeH7124 in the mountainsH2022. [20]Now therefore let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as one would hunt a partridge in the mountains.
[21]Then saidH559[H8799] SaulH7586, I have sinnedH2398[H8804]: returnH7725[H8798], my sonH1121 DavidH1732: for I will no more do thee harmH7489[H8686], because my soulH5315 was preciousH3365[H8804] in thine eyesH5869 this dayH3117: behold, I have played the foolH5528[H8689], and have erredH7686[H8799] exceedinglyH7235[H8687].[H3966] [21]Then said Saul, I have sinned: come again, my son David: for I will do thee no more harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have done foolishly, and have erred exceedingly.
[22]And DavidH1732 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], Behold the king'sH4428 spearH2595! and let oneH259 of the young menH5288 come overH5674[H8799] and fetchH3947 itH8799. [22]Then David answered, and said, Behold the king's spear, let one of the young men come over and fetch it.
[23]The LORDH3068 renderH7725[H8686] to every manH376 his righteousnessH6666 and his faithfulnessH530: for the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414[H8804] thee into my handH3027 to dayH3117, but I wouldH14[H8804] not stretch forthH7971[H8800] mine handH3027 against the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899. [23]And let the Lord reward every man according to his righteousness and faithfulness: for the Lord had delivered thee into mine hands this day, but I would not lay mine hand upon the Lord's anointed.
[24]And, behold, as thy lifeH5315 was much set byH1431[H8804] this dayH3117 in mine eyesH5869, so let my lifeH5315 be much set byH1431[H8799] in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068, and let him deliverH5337[H8686] me out of all tribulationH6869. [24]And behold, like as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes: so let my life be set by in the eyes of the Lord, that he may deliver me out of all tribulation.
[25]Then SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, BlessedH1288[H8803] be thou, my sonH1121 DavidH1732: thou shalt both doH6213[H8799] greatH6213[H8800] things, and also shalt stillH3201[H8800] prevailH3201[H8799]. So DavidH1732 wentH3212[H8799] on his wayH1870, and SaulH7586 returnedH7725[H8804] to his placeH4725. [25]Then Saul said to David, Blessed art thou, my son David: for thou shalt do great things, and also prevail. So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
