[1]Now the PhilistinesH6430 gathered togetherH6908[H8799] all their armiesH4264 to AphekH663: and the IsraelitesH3478 pitchedH2583[H8802] by a fountainH5869 which is in JezreelH3157. [1]So the Philistines were gathered together with all their armies in Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by the fountain, which is in Jezreel.
[2]And the lordsH5633 of the PhilistinesH6430 passed onH5674[H8802] by hundredsH3967, and by thousandsH505: but DavidH1732 and his menH582 passed onH5674[H8802] in the rerewardH314 with AchishH397. [2]And the princes of the Philistines went forth by hundreds and thousands, but David and his men came behind with Achish.
[3]Then saidH559[H8799] the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430, What do these HebrewsH5680 here? And AchishH397 saidH559[H8799] unto the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430, Is not this DavidH1732, the servantH5650 of SaulH7586 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, which hath been with me these daysH3117, or these yearsH8141, and I have foundH4672[H8804] no faultH3972 in him sinceH3117 he fellH5307[H8800] unto me unto this dayH3117? [3]Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found nothing in him, since he dwelt with me unto this day?
[4]And the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 were wrothH7107[H8799] with him; and the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559[H8799] unto him, MakeH7725 this fellowH376 returnH7725[H8685], that he may go againH7725[H8799] to his placeH4725 which thou hast appointedH6485[H8689] him, and let him not go downH3381[H8799] with us to battleH4421, lest in the battleH4421 he be an adversaryH7854 to us: for wherewith should he reconcileH7521[H8691] himself unto his masterH113? should it not be with the headsH7218 of these menH582? [4]But the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him, and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Send this fellow back, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest that in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he obtain the favor of his master? Should it not be with the heads of these men?
[5]Is not this DavidH1732, of whom they sangH6030[H8799] one to another in dancesH4246, sayingH559[H8800], SaulH7586 slewH5221[H8689] his thousandsH505, and DavidH1732 his ten thousandsH7233? [5]Is not this David, of whom they sang in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousand, and David his ten thousand?
[6]Then AchishH397 calledH7121[H8799] DavidH1732, and saidH559[H8799] unto him, Surely, as the LORDH3068 livethH2416, thou hast been uprightH3477, and thy going outH3318[H8800] and thy coming inH935[H8800] with me in the hostH4264 is goodH2896 in my sightH5869: for I have not foundH4672[H8804] evilH7451 in thee since the dayH3117 of thy comingH935[H8800] unto me unto this dayH3117: nevertheless the lordsH5633 favourH2896 thee notH5869. [6]Then Achish called David, and said unto him, As the Lord liveth, thou hast been upright and good in my sight, when thou wentest out and in with me in the host, neither have I found evil with thee, since thou camest to me unto this day, but the princes do not favor thee.
[7]Wherefore now returnH7725[H8798], and goH3212[H8798] in peaceH7965, that thou displeaseH6213[H8799][H7451][H5869] not the lordsH5633 of the PhilistinesH6430. [7]Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the princes of the Philistines.
[8]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto AchishH397, But what have I doneH6213[H8804]? and what hast thou foundH4672[H8804] in thy servantH5650 so long asH3117 I have been with theeH6440 unto this dayH3117, that I may not goH935[H8799] fightH3898[H8738] against the enemiesH341[H8802] of my lordH113 the kingH4428? [8]And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? And what hast thou found in thy servant as long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
[9]And AchishH397 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799] to DavidH1732, I knowH3045[H8804] that thou art goodH2896 in my sightH5869, as an angelH4397 of GodH430: notwithstanding the princesH8269 of the PhilistinesH6430 have saidH559[H8804], He shall not go upH5927[H8799] with us to the battleH4421. [9]Achish then answered, and said to David, I know thou pleasest me, as an angel of God: but the princes of the Philistines have said, Let him not go up with us to battle.
[10]Wherefore now rise up earlyH7925[H8685] in the morningH1242 with thy master'sH113 servantsH5650 that are comeH935[H8804] with thee: and as soon as ye be up earlyH7925[H8689] in the morningH1242, and have lightH215[H8804], departH3212.[H8798] [10]Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master's servants that are come with thee: and when ye be up early, as soon as ye have light, depart.
[11]So DavidH1732 and his menH582 rose up earlyH7925[H8686] to departH3212[H8800] in the morningH1242, to returnH7725[H8800] into the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430. And the PhilistinesH6430 went upH5927[H8804] to JezreelH3157. [11]So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, and to return into the land of the Philistines: and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
