YLT
[1]And the wordH1697 of SamuelH8050 came to all IsraelH3478. Now IsraelH3478 went outH3318[H8799] againstH7125[H8800] the PhilistinesH6430 to battleH4421, and pitchedH2583[H8799] beside EbenezerH72: and the PhilistinesH6430 pitchedH2583[H8804] in AphekH663. [1]And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,
[2]And the PhilistinesH6430 put themselves in arrayH6186[H8799] againstH7125[H8800] IsraelH3478: and when they joinedH5203[H8799] battleH4421, IsraelH3478 was smittenH5062[H8735] beforeH6440 the PhilistinesH6430: and they slewH5221[H8686] of the armyH4634 in the fieldH7704 about fourH702 thousandH505 menH376. [2]and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.
[3]And when the peopleH5971 were comeH935[H8799] into the campH4264, the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8799], Wherefore hath the LORDH3068 smittenH5062[H8804] us to dayH3117 beforeH6440 the PhilistinesH6430? Let us fetchH3947[H8799] the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 out of ShilohH7887 unto us, that, when it comethH935[H8799] amongH7130 us, it may saveH3467[H8686] us out of the handH3709 of our enemiesH341.[H8802] [3]And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'
[4]So the peopleH5971 sentH7971[H8799] to ShilohH7887, that they might bringH5375[H8799] from thence the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635, which dwellethH3427[H8802] between the cherubimsH3742: and the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, were there with the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of GodH430. [4]And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there [are] two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.
[5]And when the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 cameH935[H8800] into the campH4264, all IsraelH3478 shoutedH7321[H8686] with a greatH1419 shoutH8643, so that the earthH776 rang againH1949.[H8735] [5]And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout -- a great shout -- and the earth is moved.
[6]And when the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085[H8799] the noiseH6963 of the shoutH8643, they saidH559[H8799], What meaneth the noiseH6963 of this greatH1419 shoutH8643 in the campH4264 of the HebrewsH5680? And they understoodH3045[H8799] that the arkH727 of the LORDH3068 was comeH935[H8804] into the campH4264. [6]And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What [is] the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.
[7]And the PhilistinesH6430 were afraidH3372[H8799], for they saidH559[H8804], GodH430 is comeH935[H8804] into the campH4264. And they saidH559[H8799], WoeH188 unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretoforeH865.[H8032] [7]And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Wo to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.
[8]WoeH188 unto us! who shall deliverH5337[H8686] us out of the handH3027 of these mightyH117 GodsH430? these are the GodsH430 that smoteH5221[H8688] the EgyptiansH4714 with all the plaguesH4347 in the wildernessH4057. [8]Wo to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these [are] the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
[9]Be strongH2388[H8690], and quitH1961[H8798] yourselves like menH582, O ye PhilistinesH6430, that ye be not servantsH5647[H8799] unto the HebrewsH5680, as they have beenH5647[H8804] to you: quitH1961[H8804] yourselves like menH582, and fightH3898.[H8738] [9]Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you -- then ye have become men, and have fought.'
[10]And the PhilistinesH6430 foughtH3898[H8735], and IsraelH3478 was smittenH5062[H8735], and they fledH5127[H8799] every manH376 into his tentH168: and there was a veryH3966 greatH1419 slaughterH4347; for there fellH5307[H8799] of IsraelH3478 thirtyH7970 thousandH505 footmenH7273. [10]And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;
[11]And the arkH727 of GodH430 was takenH3947[H8738]; and the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, were slainH4191.[H8804] [11]and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.
[12]And there ranH7323[H8799] a manH376 of BenjaminH1144 out of the armyH4634, and cameH935[H8799] to ShilohH7887 the same dayH3117 with his clothesH4055 rentH7167[H8803], and with earthH127 upon his headH7218. [12]And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes [are] rent, and earth on his head;
[13]And when he cameH935[H8799], lo, EliH5941 satH3427[H8802] upon a seatH3678 by the waysideH1870[H3027][H8675][H3197] watchingH6822[H8764]: for his heartH3820 trembledH2730 for the arkH727 of GodH430. And when the manH376 cameH935[H8802] into the cityH5892, and toldH5046[H8687] it, all the cityH5892 cried outH2199.[H8799] [13]and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare [it] in the city, and all the city crieth out.
[14]And when EliH5941 heardH8085[H8799] the noiseH6963 of the cryingH6818, he saidH559[H8799], What meaneth the noiseH6963 of this tumultH1995? And the manH376 cameH935[H8799] in hastilyH4116[H8765], and toldH5046[H8686] EliH5941. [14]And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What -- the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.
[15]Now EliH5941 was ninetyH8673 and eightH8083 yearsH8141 oldH1121; and his eyesH5869 were dimH6965[H8804], that he couldH3201[H8804] not seeH7200.[H8800] [15]And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.
[16]And the manH376 saidH559[H8799] unto EliH5941, I am he that cameH935[H8802] out of the armyH4634, and I fledH5127[H8804] to dayH3117 out of the armyH4634. And he saidH559[H8799], What is there doneH1697, my sonH1121? [16]And the man saith unto Eli, `I [am] he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'
[17]And the messengerH1319[H8764] answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], IsraelH3478 is fledH5127[H8804] beforeH6440 the PhilistinesH6430, and there hath been also a greatH1419 slaughterH4046 among the peopleH5971, and thy twoH8147 sonsH1121 also, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, are deadH4191[H8804], and the arkH727 of GodH430 is takenH3947.[H8738] [17]And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died -- Hophni and Phinehas -- and the ark of God hath been captured.'
[18]And it came to pass, when he made mentionH2142[H8687] of the arkH727 of GodH430, that he fellH5307[H8799] from off the seatH3678 backwardH322 byH1157 the sideH3027 of the gateH8179, and his neckH4665 brakeH7665[H8735], and he diedH4191[H8799]: for he was an oldH2204[H8804] manH376, and heavyH3513[H8804]. And he had judgedH8199[H8804] IsraelH3478 fortyH705 yearsH8141. [18]And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man [is] old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.
[19]And his daughter in lawH3618, Phinehas'H6372 wifeH802, was with childH2030, near to be deliveredH3205[H8800]: and when she heardH8085[H8799] the tidingsH8052 thatH413 the arkH727 of GodH430 was takenH3947[H8736], and that her father in lawH2524 and her husbandH376 were deadH4191[H8804], she bowedH3766[H8799] herself and travailedH3205[H8799]; for her painsH6735 cameH2015 upon herH8738. [19]And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, [is] pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.
[20]And about the timeH6256 of her deathH4191[H8800] the women that stoodH5324[H8737] by her saidH1696[H8762] unto her, FearH3372[H8799] not; for thou hast bornH3205[H8804] a sonH1121. But she answeredH6030[H8804] not, neither did she regardH7896[H8804] itH3820. [20]And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart [to it];
[21]And she namedH7121[H8799] the childH5288 IchabodH350, sayingH559[H8800], The gloryH3519 is departedH1540[H8804] from IsraelH3478: becauseH413 the arkH727 of GodH430 was takenH3947[H8736], and because of her father in lawH2524 and her husbandH376. [21]and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
[22]And she saidH559[H8799], The gloryH3519 is departedH1540[H8804] from IsraelH3478: for the arkH727 of GodH430 is takenH3947.[H8738] [22]And she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
