[1]And when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam. |

[2]But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying, |
| [3]SpeakH559[H8798] unto RehoboamH7346 the sonH1121 of SolomonH8010, kingH4428 of JudahH3063, and to all IsraelH3478 in JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144, sayingH559,[H8800] |
[3]Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying, |
| [4]Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068, Ye shall not go upH5927[H8799], nor fightH3898[H8735] against your brethrenH251: returnH7725[H8798] every manH376 to his houseH1004: for this thingH1697 is doneH1961[H8738] of me. And they obeyedH8085[H8799] the wordsH1697 of the LORDH3068, and returnedH7725[H8799] from goingH3212[H8800] against JeroboamH3379. |
[4]Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done by me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam. |

[5]And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defense in Judah. |

[6]He built even Beth-lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa, |

[10]And Zorah, and Ajalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities. |
| [11]And he fortifiedH2388[H8762] the strong holdsH4694, and putH5414[H8799] captainsH5057 in them, and storeH214 of victualH3978, and of oilH8081 and wineH3196. |
[11]And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of provisions, and of oil and wine. |
| [12]And in every several cityH5892 he put shieldsH6793 and spearsH7420, and made them exceedingH7235[H8687][H3966] strongH2388[H8762], having JudahH3063 and Benjamin on his sideH1144. |
[12]And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side. |
| [13]And the priestsH3548 and the LevitesH3881 that were in all IsraelH3478 resortedH3320[H8694] to him out of all their coastsH1366. |
[13]And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him from all their borders. |
| [14]For the LevitesH3881 leftH5800[H8804] their suburbsH4054 and their possessionH272, and cameH3212[H8799] to JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389: for JeroboamH3379 and his sonsH1121 had cast them offH2186[H8689] from executing the priest's officeH3547[H8763] unto the LORDH3068: |
[14]For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office to the LORD: |
| [15]And he ordainedH5975[H8686] him priestsH3548 for the high placesH1116, and for the devilsH8163, and for the calvesH5695 which he had madeH6213.[H8804] |
[15]And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made. |
| [16]And afterH310 them out of all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 such as setH5414[H8802] their heartsH3824 to seekH1245[H8763] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 cameH935[H8804] to JerusalemH3389, to sacrificeH2076[H8800] unto the LORDH3068 GodH430 of their fathersH1. |
[16]And after them out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice to the LORD God of their fathers. |
| [17]So they strengthenedH2388[H8762] the kingdomH4438 of JudahH3063, and made RehoboamH7346 the sonH1121 of SolomonH8010 strongH553[H8762], threeH7969 yearsH8141: for threeH7969 yearsH8141 they walkedH1980[H8804] in the wayH1870 of DavidH1732 and SolomonH8010. |
[17]So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon. |
| [18]And RehoboamH7346 tookH3947[H8799] him MahalathH4258 the daughterH1323[H8675][H1121] of JerimothH3406 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 to wifeH802, and AbihailH32 the daughterH1323 of EliabH446 the sonH1121 of JesseH3448; |
[18]And Rehoboam took to himself Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David for a wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse; |
| [19]Which bareH3205[H8799] him childrenH1121; JeushH3266, and ShamariahH8114, and ZahamH2093. |
[19]Who bore him children, Jeush, and Shamariah, and Zaham. |
| [20]And afterH310 her he tookH3947[H8804] MaachahH4601 the daughterH1323 of AbsalomH53; which bareH3205[H8799] him AbijahH29, and AttaiH6262, and ZizaH2124, and ShelomithH8019. |
[20]And after her he took Maachah the daughter of Absalom; who bore him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith. |
| [21]And RehoboamH7346 lovedH157[H8799] MaachahH4601 the daughterH1323 of AbsalomH53 above all his wivesH802 and his concubinesH6370: (for he tookH5375[H8804] eighteenH8083[H6240] wivesH802, and threescoreH8346 concubinesH6370; and begatH3205[H8686] twentyH6242 and eightH8083 sonsH1121, and threescoreH8346 daughtersH1323.) |
[21]And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and sixty concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and sixty daughters.) |
| [22]And RehoboamH7346 madeH5975[H8686] AbijahH29 the sonH1121 of MaachahH4601 the chiefH7218, to be rulerH5057 among his brethrenH251: for he thought to make him kingH4427.[H8687] |
[22]And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king. |
| [23]And he dealt wiselyH995[H8799], and dispersedH6555[H8799] of all his childrenH1121 throughout all the countriesH776 of JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144, unto every fencedH4694 cityH5892: and he gaveH5414[H8799] them victualH4202 in abundanceH7230. And he desiredH7592[H8799] manyH1995 wivesH802. |
[23]And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, to every fortified city: and he gave them provisions in abundance. And he desired many wives. |
