[1]AfterH310 these thingsH1697, and the establishmentH571 thereof, SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 cameH935[H8804], and enteredH935[H8799] into JudahH3063, and encampedH2583[H8799] against the fencedH1219[H8803] citiesH5892, and thoughtH559[H8799] to winH1234 them for himselfH8800. [1]After these things faithfully described, Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria] came and entered into Judah, and besieged the strong cities, and thought to win them for himself.
[2]And when HezekiahH3169 sawH7200[H8799] that SennacheribH5576 was comeH935[H8804], and that he was purposedH6440 to fightH4421 against JerusalemH3389, [2]When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that his purpose was to fight against Jerusalem,
[3]He took counselH3289[H8735] with his princesH8269 and his mighty menH1368 to stopH5640[H8800] the watersH4325 of the fountainsH5869 which were withoutH2351 the cityH5892: and they did helpH5826 himH8799. [3]Then he took counsel with his princes and his nobles, to stop the water of the fountains without the city: and they did help him.
[4]So there was gatheredH6908 muchH7227 peopleH5971 togetherH6908[H8735], who stoppedH5640[H8799] all the fountainsH4599, and the brookH5158 that ranH7857[H8802] through the midstH8432 of the landH776, sayingH559[H8800], Why should the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 comeH935[H8799], and findH4672[H8804] muchH7227 waterH4325? [4]So many of the people assembled themselves, and stopped all the fountains, and the river that ran through the midst of the country, saying, Why should the kings of Asshur [Assyria] come, and find much water?
[5]Also he strengthenedH2388[H8691] himself, and built upH1129[H8799] all the wallH2346 that was brokenH6555[H8803], and raised it upH5927[H8686] to the towersH4026, and anotherH312 wallH2346 withoutH2351, and repairedH2388[H8762] MilloH4407 in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732, and madeH6213[H8799] dartsH7973 and shieldsH4043 in abundanceH7230. [5]And he took courage, and built all the broken wall, and made up the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made many darts and shields.
[6]And he setH5414[H8799] captainsH8269 of warH4421 over the peopleH5971, and gathered them togetherH6908[H8799] to him in the streetH7339 of the gateH8179 of the cityH5892, and spakeH1696[H8762] comfortablyH3824 to them, sayingH559,[H8800] [6]And he set captains of war over the people, and assembled them to him in the broad place of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably unto them, saying,
[7]Be strongH2388[H8798] and courageousH553[H8798], be not afraidH3372[H8799] nor dismayedH2865[H8735] forH6440 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, nor for all the multitudeH1995 that is with him: for there be more with us than with himH7227: [7]Be strong and courageous: fear not, neither be afraid for the king of Asshur [Assyria], neither for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us, than is with him.
[8]With him is an armH2220 of fleshH1320; but with us is the LORDH3068 our GodH430 to helpH5826[H8800] us, and to fightH3898[H8736] our battlesH4421. And the peopleH5971 restedH5564[H8735] themselves upon the wordsH1697 of HezekiahH3169 kingH4428 of JudahH3063. [8]With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God for to help us, and to fight our battles. Then the people were confirmed by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
[9]AfterH310 this did SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 sendH7971[H8804] his servantsH5650 to JerusalemH3389, (but he himself laid siege against LachishH3923, and all his powerH4475 with him,) unto HezekiahH3169 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, and unto all JudahH3063 that were at JerusalemH3389, sayingH559,[H8800] [9]After this, did Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria] send his servants to Jerusalem (while he was against Lachish, and all his dominion with him) unto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
[10]Thus saithH559[H8804] SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, Whereon do ye trustH982[H8802], that ye abideH3427[H8802] in the siegeH4692 in JerusalemH3389? [10]Thus saith Sennacherib the king of Asshur [Assyria], Wherein do ye trust, that ye will remain in Jerusalem, during the siege?
[11]Doth not HezekiahH3169 persuadeH5496[H8688] you to giveH5414[H8800] over yourselves to dieH4191[H8800] by famineH7458 and by thirstH6772, sayingH559[H8800], The LORDH3068 our GodH430 shall deliverH5337[H8686] us out of the handH3709 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804? [11]Doth not Hezekiah entice you to give over yourselves unto death by famine and by thirst, saying, The Lord our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Asshur [Assyria]?
[12]Hath not the same HezekiahH3169 taken awayH5493[H8689] his high placesH1116 and his altarsH4196, and commandedH559[H8799] JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, sayingH559[H8800], Ye shall worshipH7812[H8691] beforeH6440 oneH259 altarH4196, and burn incenseH6999 upon itH8686? [12]Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
[13]KnowH3045[H8799] ye not what I and my fathersH1 have doneH6213[H8804] unto all the peopleH5971 of other landsH776? were the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 of those landsH776 any waysH3201[H8800] ableH3201[H8804] to deliverH5337[H8687] their landsH776 out of mine handH3027? [13]Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other countries? Were the gods of the nations of other lands able to deliver their land out of mine hand?
[14]Who was there among all the godsH430 of those nationsH1471 that my fathersH1 utterly destroyedH2763[H8689], that couldH3201[H8804] deliverH5337[H8687] his peopleH5971 out of mine handH3027, that your GodH430 should be ableH3201[H8799] to deliverH5337[H8687] you out of mine handH3027? [14]Who is he of all the gods of those nations (that my fathers have destroyed) that could deliver his people out of mine hand? That your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
[15]Now therefore let notH3808 HezekiahH2396 deceiveH5377[H8686] you, nor persuadeH5496[H8686] you on this manner, neither yet believeH539[H8686] him: for no godH433 of any nationH1471 or kingdomH4467 was ableH3201[H8799] to deliverH5337[H8687] his peopleH5971 out of mine handH3027, and out of the handH3027 of my fathersH1: how much less shall your GodH430 deliverH5337[H8686] you out of mine handH3027? [15]Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor seduce you after this sort, neither believe ye him: for none of all the gods of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your gods deliver you out of mine hand?
[16]And his servantsH5650 spakeH1696[H8765] yet more against the LORDH3068 GodH430, and against his servantH5650 HezekiahH3169. [16]And his servants spake yet more against the Lord God, and against his servant Hezekiah.
[17]He wroteH3789[H8804] also lettersH5612 to railH2778[H8763] on the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, and to speakH559[H8800] against him, sayingH559[H8800], As the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 of other landsH776 have not deliveredH5337[H8689] their peopleH5971 out of mine handH3027, so shall not the GodH430 of HezekiahH3169 deliverH5337[H8686] his peopleH5971 out of mine handH3027. [17]He wrote also letters, blaspheming the Lord God of Israel and speaking against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other countries could not deliver their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
[18]Then they criedH7121[H8799] with a loudH1419 voiceH6963 in the Jews' speechH3066 unto the peopleH5971 of JerusalemH3389 that were on the wallH2346, to affrightH3372[H8763] them, and to troubleH926[H8763] them; that they might takeH3920[H8799] the cityH5892. [18]Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to fear them and to astonish them, that they might take the city.
[19]And they spakeH1696[H8762] againstH5921 the GodH430 of JerusalemH3389, as against the godsH430 of the peopleH5971 of the earthH776, which were the workH4639 of the handsH3027 of manH120. [19]Thus they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, even the works of man's hands,
[20]And for this cause HezekiahH3169 the kingH4428, and the prophetH5030 IsaiahH3470 the sonH1121 of AmozH531, prayedH6419[H8691] and criedH2199[H8799] to heavenH8064. [20]But Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed against this and cried to heaven.
[21]And the LORDH3068 sentH7971[H8799] an angelH4397, which cut offH3582[H8686] all the mighty menH1368 of valourH2428, and the leadersH5057 and captainsH8269 in the campH4264 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. So he returnedH7725[H8799] with shameH1322 of faceH6440 to his own landH776. And when he was comeH935[H8799] into the houseH1004 of his godH430, they that came forthH3329 of his own bowelsH4578 slewH5307[H8689] him there with the swordH2719. [21]And the Lord sent an angel which destroyed all the valiant men, and the princes and captains of the host of the king of Asshur [Assyria]: so he returned with shame to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels, slew him there with the sword.
[22]Thus the LORDH3068 savedH3467[H8686] HezekiahH3169 and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JerusalemH3389 from the handH3027 of SennacheribH5576 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and from the handH3027 of all other, and guidedH5095[H8762] them on every sideH5439. [22]So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria], and from the hand of all other, and maintained them on every side.
[23]And manyH7227 broughtH935[H8688] giftsH4503 unto the LORDH3068 to JerusalemH3389, and presentsH4030 to HezekiahH3169 kingH4428 of JudahH3063: so that he was magnifiedH5375[H8735] in the sightH5869 of all nationsH1471 from thenceforthH310. [23]And many brought offerings unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.
[24]In those daysH3117 HezekiahH3169 was sickH2470[H8804] to the deathH4191[H8800], and prayedH6419[H8691] unto the LORDH3068: and he spakeH559[H8799] unto him, and he gaveH5414[H8804] him a signH4159. [24]In those days Hezekiah was sick unto the death, and prayed unto the Lord, who spake unto him, and gave him a sign.
[25]But HezekiahH3169 rendered not againH7725[H8689] according to the benefitH1576 done unto him; for his heartH3820 was lifted upH1361[H8804]: therefore there was wrathH7110 upon him, and upon JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389. [25]But Hezekiah did not render according to the reward bestowed upon him: for his heart was lift up, and wrath came upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
[26]Notwithstanding HezekiahH3169 humbledH3665[H8735] himself for the prideH1363 of his heartH3820, both he and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JerusalemH3389, so that the wrathH7110 of the LORDH3068 cameH935[H8804] not upon them in the daysH3117 of HezekiahH3169. [26]Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself (after that his heart was lifted up) he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
[27]And HezekiahH3169 had exceedingH3966 muchH7235[H8687] richesH6239 and honourH3519: and he madeH6213[H8804] himself treasuriesH214 for silverH3701, and for goldH2091, and for preciousH3368 stonesH68, and for spicesH1314, and for shieldsH4043, and for all manner of pleasantH2532 jewelsH3627; [27]Hezekiah also had exceeding much riches and honor, and he gat him treasures of silver, and of gold, and of precious stones, and of sweet odors, and of shields, and of all pleasant vessels:
[28]StorehousesH4543 also for the increaseH8393 of cornH1715, and wineH8492, and oilH3323; and stallsH723 for all manner of beastsH929, and cotesH220 for flocksH5739. [28]And of storehouses for the increase of wheat and wine and oil, and stalls for all beasts, and rows for the stables.
[29]Moreover he providedH6213[H8804] him citiesH5892, and possessionsH4735 of flocksH6629 and herdsH1241 in abundanceH7230: for GodH430 had givenH5414[H8804] him substanceH7399 veryH3966 muchH7227. [29]And he made him cities, and had possession of sheep and oxen in abundance: for God had given him substance exceeding much.
[30]This same HezekiahH3169 also stoppedH5640[H8804] the upperH5945 watercourseH4161[H4325] of GihonH1521, and brought it straightH3474[H8762] downH4295 to the west sideH4628 of the cityH5892 of DavidH1732. And HezekiahH3169 prosperedH6743[H8686] in all his worksH4639. [30]This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper water springs of Gihon, and led them straight underneath toward the city of David westward. So Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
[31]HowbeitH3651 in the business of the ambassadorsH3887[H8688] of the princesH8269 of BabylonH894, who sentH7971[H8764] unto him to enquireH1875[H8800] of the wonderH4159 that was done in the landH776, GodH430 leftH5800[H8804] him, to tryH5254[H8763] him, that he might knowH3045[H8800] all that was in his heartH3824. [31]But because of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, which sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him to try him, and to know all that was in his heart.
[32]Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of HezekiahH3169, and his goodnessH2617, behold, they are writtenH3789[H8803] in the visionH2377 of IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030, the sonH1121 of AmozH531, and in the bookH5612 of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478. [32]Concerning the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
[33]And HezekiahH3169 sleptH7901[H8799] with his fathersH1, and they buriedH6912[H8799] him in the chiefestH4608 of the sepulchresH6913 of the sonsH1121 of DavidH1732: and all JudahH3063 and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JerusalemH3389 did himH6213[H8804] honourH3519 at his deathH4194. And ManassehH4519 his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his steadH8799. [33]So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the highest sepulchre of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
