[1]Josias was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. |
| [2]And he didH6213[H8799] that which was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068, and walkedH3212[H8799] in the waysH1870 of DavidH1732 his fatherH1, and declinedH5493[H8804] neither to the right handH3225, nor to the leftH8040. |
[2]And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of his father David, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. |
| [3]For in the eighthH8083 yearH8141 of his reignH4427[H8800], while he was yet youngH5288, he beganH2490[H8689] to seekH1875[H8800] after the GodH430 of DavidH1732 his fatherH1: and in the twelfthH8147[H6240] yearH8141 he beganH2490[H8689] to purgeH2891[H8763] JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 from the high placesH1116, and the grovesH842, and the carved imagesH6456, and the molten imagesH4541. |
[3]And in the eighth year of his reign, and he being yet a youth, he began to seek the Lord God of his father David: and in the twelfth year of his reign he began to purge Juda and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the ornaments for the altars, and the molten images. |
| [4]And they brake downH5422[H8762] the altarsH4196 of BaalimH1168 in his presenceH6440; and the imagesH2553, that were on high above themH4605, he cut downH1438[H8765]; and the grovesH842, and the carved imagesH6456, and the molten imagesH4541, he brake in piecesH7665[H8765], and made dustH1854[H8689] of them, and strowedH2236[H8799] it uponH6440 the gravesH6913 of them that had sacrificedH2076 unto themH8802. |
[4]And he pulled down the altars of Baalim that were before his face, and the high places that were above them; and he cut down the groves, and the graven images, and broke in pieces the molten images, and reduced them to powder, and cast it upon the surface of the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them. |
| [5]And he burntH8313[H8804] the bonesH6106 of the priestsH3548 upon their altarsH4196, and cleansedH2891[H8762] JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389. |
[5]And he burnt the bones of the priests upon the altars, and purged Juda and Jerusalem. |
| [6]And so did he in the citiesH5892 of ManassehH4519, and EphraimH669, and SimeonH8095, even unto NaphtaliH5321, with their mattocksH2719 round aboutH5439. |
[6]And he did so in the cities of Manasse, and Ephraim, and Symeon, and Nephthali, and the places round about them. |
| [7]And when he had broken downH5422[H8762] the altarsH4196 and the grovesH842, and had beatenH3807[H8765] the graven imagesH6456 into powderH1854[H8687], and cut downH1438[H8765] all the idolsH2553 throughout all the landH776 of IsraelH3478, he returnedH7725[H8799] to JerusalemH3389. |
[7]And he pulled down the altars and the groves, and he cut the idols in small pieces, and cut off all the high places from all the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem. |
| [8]Now in the eighteenthH8083[H6240] yearH8141 of his reignH4427[H8800], when he had purgedH2891[H8763] the landH776, and the houseH1004, he sentH7971[H8804] ShaphanH8227 the sonH1121 of AzaliahH683, and MaaseiahH4641 the governorH8269 of the cityH5892, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of JoahazH3099 the recorderH2142[H8688], to repairH2388[H8763] the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 his GodH430. |
[8]And in the eighteenth year of his reign, after having cleansed the land, and the house, he sent Saphan the son of Ezelias, and Maasa prefect of the city, and Juach son of Joachaz his recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God. |
| [9]And when they cameH935[H8799] to HilkiahH2518 the highH1419 priestH3548, they deliveredH5414[H8799] the moneyH3701 that was broughtH935[H8716] into the houseH1004 of GodH430, which the LevitesH3881 that keptH8104[H8802] the doorsH5592 had gatheredH622[H8804] of the handH3027 of ManassehH4519 and EphraimH669, and of all the remnantH7611 of IsraelH3478, and of all JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144; and they returnedH7725[H8799][H8675][H3427][H8802] to JerusalemH3389. |
[9]And they came to Chelcias the high priest, and gave the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the gate collected of the hand of Manasse and Ephraim, and of the princes, and of every one that was left in Israel, and of the children of Juda and Benjamin, and of the dwellers in Jerusalem. |
| [10]And they putH5414[H8799] it in the handH3027 of the workmenH6213[H8802][H4399] that had the oversightH6485[H8716] of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and they gaveH5414[H8799] it to the workmenH6213[H8802][H4399] that wroughtH6213[H8802] in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, to repairH918[H8800] and amendH2388[H8763] the houseH1004: |
[10]And they gave it into the hand of the workmen, who were appointed in the house of the Lord, and they gave it to the workmen who wrought in the house of the Lord, to repair and strengthen the house. |
| [11]Even to the artificersH2796 and buildersH1129[H8802] gaveH5414[H8799] they it, to buyH7069[H8800] hewnH4274 stoneH68, and timberH6086 for couplingsH4226, and to floorH7136[H8763] the housesH1004 which the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 had destroyedH7843.[H8689] |
[11]They gave it also to the carpenters and builders, to buy squared stones, and timber for beams to cover the houses which the kings of Juda had destroyed. |
| [12]And the menH582 didH6213[H8802] the workH4399 faithfullyH530: and the overseersH5329[H8763] of them were JahathH3189 and ObadiahH5662, the LevitesH3881, of the sonsH1121 of MerariH4847; and ZechariahH2148 and MeshullamH4918, of the sons of the KohathitesH6956, to set it forwardH6485[H8716]; and other of the LevitesH3881, all that could skillH995[H8688] of instrumentsH3627 of musickH7892. |
[12]And the men were faithfully engaged in the works: and over them were superintendents, Jeth and Abdias, Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zacharias and Mosollam, of the sons of Caath, appointed to oversee; and every Levite, and every one that understood how to play on musical instruments. |
| [13]Also they were over the bearers of burdensH5449, and were overseersH5329[H8764] of all that wroughtH6213[H8802] the workH4399 in any manner of serviceH5656: and of the LevitesH3881 there were scribesH5608[H8802], and officersH7860[H8802], and portersH7778. |
[13]And overseers were over the burden-bearers, and over all the workmen in the respective works; and of the Levites were appointed scribes, and judges, and porters. |
| [14]And when they brought outH3318[H8687] the moneyH3701 that was brought intoH935[H8716] the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, HilkiahH2518 the priestH3548 foundH4672[H8804] a bookH5612 of the lawH8451 of the LORDH3068 given byH3027 MosesH4872. |
[14]And when they brought forth the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord, Chelcias the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by the hand of Moses. |
| [15]And HilkiahH2518 answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799] to ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608[H8802], I have foundH4672[H8804] the bookH5612 of the lawH8451 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. And HilkiahH2518 deliveredH5414[H8799] the bookH5612 to ShaphanH8227. |
[15]And Chelcias answered and said to Saphan the scribe, I have found a book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Chelcias gave the book to Saphan. |
| [16]And ShaphanH8227 carriedH935[H8686] the bookH5612 to the kingH4428, and broughtH7725 the kingH4428 wordH1697 backH7725[H8686] again, sayingH559[H8800], All that was committedH5414[H8738] toH3027 thy servantsH5650, they doH6213 itH8802. |
[16]And Saphan brought in the book to the king, and moreover gave an account to the king, saying, This is all the money given into the hand of thy servants that work. |
| [17]And they have gathered togetherH5413[H8686] the moneyH3701 that was foundH4672[H8737] in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and have deliveredH5414[H8799] it into the handH3027 of the overseersH6485[H8716], and to the handH3027 of the workmenH6213[H8802].[H4399] |
[17]And they have collected the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and given it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of them that do the work. |
| [18]Then ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608[H8802] toldH5046[H8686] the kingH4428, sayingH559[H8800], HilkiahH2518 the priestH3548 hath givenH5414[H8804] me a bookH5612. And ShaphanH8227 readH7121[H8799] it beforeH6440 the kingH4428. |
[18]And Saphan the scribe brought word to the king, saying, Chelcias the priest has given me a book. And Saphan read it before the king. |
| [19]And it came to pass, when the kingH4428 had heardH8085[H8800] the wordsH1697 of the lawH8451, that he rentH7167[H8799] his clothesH899. |
[19]And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the law, that he rent his garments. |
| [20]And the kingH4428 commandedH6680[H8762] HilkiahH2518, and AhikamH296 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227, and AbdonH5658 the sonH1121 of MicahH4318, and ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608[H8802], and AsaiahH6222 a servantH5650 of the king'sH4428, sayingH559,[H8800] |
[20]And the king commanded Chelcias, and Achicam the son of Saphan, and Abdom the son of Michaias, and Saphan the scribe, and Asia the servant of the king, saying, |
| [21]GoH3212[H8798], enquireH1875[H8798] of the LORDH3068 for me, and for them that are leftH7604[H8737] in IsraelH3478 and in JudahH3063, concerning the wordsH1697 of the bookH5612 that is foundH4672[H8738]: for greatH1419 is the wrathH2534 of the LORDH3068 that is poured outH5413[H8738] upon us, because our fathersH1 have not keptH8104[H8804] the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, to doH6213[H8800] after all that is writtenH3789[H8803] in this bookH5612. |
[21]Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for every one that is left in Israel and Juda, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord which has been kindled amongst us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of the Lord, to do according to all the things written in this book. |
| [22]And HilkiahH2518, and they that the kingH4428 had appointed, wentH3212[H8799] to HuldahH2468 the prophetessH5031, the wifeH802 of ShallumH7967 the sonH1121 of TikvathH8616[H8676][H8445], the sonH1121 of HasrahH2641, keeperH8104[H8802] of the wardrobeH899; (now she dweltH3427[H8802] in JerusalemH3389 in the collegeH4932:) and they spakeH1696 to her to that effectH8762. |
[22]And Chelcias went, and the others whom the king told, to Olda the prophetess, the wife of Sellem son of Thecoe, son of Aras, who kept the commandments; and she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter: and they spoke to her accordingly. |
| [23]And she answeredH559[H8799] them, Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, TellH559[H8798] ye the manH376 that sentH7971 you to meH8804, |
[23]And she said to them, Thus has the Lord God of Israel said, Tell the man who sent you to me, |
| [24]Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068, Behold, I will bringH935[H8688] evilH7451 upon this placeH4725, and upon the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] thereof, even all the cursesH423 that are writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 which they have readH7121[H8804] beforeH6440 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063: |
[24]Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I bring evil upon this place, even all the words that are written in the book that was read before the king of Juda: |
| [25]Because they have forsakenH5800[H8804] me, and have burned incenseH6999[H8762][H8675][H6999][H8686] unto otherH312 godsH430, that they might provoke me to angerH3707[H8687] with all the worksH4639 of their handsH3027; therefore my wrathH2534 shall be poured outH5413[H8799] upon this placeH4725, and shall not be quenchedH3518.[H8799] |
[25]because they have forsaken me, and burnt incense to strange gods, that they might provoke me by all the works of their hands; and my wrath is kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched. |
| [26]And as forH413 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063, who sentH7971[H8802] you to enquireH1875[H8800] of the LORDH3068, so shall ye sayH559[H8799] unto him, Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 concerning the wordsH1697 H8085which thou hast heardH8804 |
[26]And concerning the king of Juda, who sent you to seek the Lord,—thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, As for the words which thou has heard, |
| [27]Because thine heartH3824 was tenderH7401[H8804], and thou didst humbleH3665[H8735] thyself beforeH6440 GodH430, when thou heardestH8085[H8800] his wordsH1697 against this placeH4725, and against the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] thereof, and humbledstH3665[H8735] thyself beforeH6440 me, and didst rendH7167[H8799] thy clothesH899, and weepH1058[H8799] beforeH6440 me; I have even heardH8085[H8804] thee also, saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068. |
[27]forasmuch as thy heart was ashamed, and thou was humbled before me when thou heardest my words against this place, and against the inhabitants of it, and thou wast humbled before me, and didst rend thy garments, and didst weep before me; I also have heard, saith the Lord. |
| [28]Behold, I will gatherH622[H8802] thee to thy fathersH1, and thou shalt be gatheredH622[H8738] to thy graveH6913 in peaceH7965, neither shall thine eyesH5869 seeH7200[H8799] all the evilH7451 that I will bringH935[H8688] upon this placeH4725, and upon the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of the same. So they broughtH7725 the kingH4428 wordH1697 againH7725.[H8686] |
[28]Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, and thine eyes shall not look upon all the evils which I am bringing upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of it. And they brought back word to the king. |
| [29]Then the kingH4428 sentH7971[H8799] and gathered togetherH622[H8799] all the eldersH2205 of JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389. |
[29]And the king sent and gathered the elders of Juda and Jerusalem. |
| [30]And the kingH4428 went upH5927[H8799] into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and all the menH376 of JudahH3063, and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JerusalemH3389, and the priestsH3548, and the LevitesH3881, and all the peopleH5971, greatH1419 and smallH6996: and he readH7121[H8799] in their earsH241 all the wordsH1697 of the bookH5612 of the covenantH1285 that was foundH4672[H8737] in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. |
[30]And the king went up to the house of the Lord, he and all Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that were found in the house of the Lord. |
| [31]And the kingH4428 stoodH5975[H8799] in his placeH5977, and madeH3772[H8799] a covenantH1285 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, to walkH3212[H8800] afterH310 the LORDH3068, and to keepH8104[H8800] his commandmentsH4687, and his testimoniesH5715, and his statutesH2706, with all his heartH3824, and with all his soulH5315, to performH6213[H8800] the wordsH1697 of the covenantH1285 which are writtenH3789[H8803] in this bookH5612. |
[31]And the king stood at a pillar, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk before the Lord, to keep his commandments and testimonies, and his ordinances, with all his heart and with all his soul, so as to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. |
| [32]And he caused all that were presentH4672[H8737] in JerusalemH3389 and BenjaminH1144 to standH5975[H8686] to it. And the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JerusalemH3389 didH6213[H8799] according to the covenantH1285 of GodH430, the GodH430 of their fathersH1. |
[32]And he caused all that were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand; and the inhabitants of Jerusalem made a covenant in the house of the Lord God of their fathers. |
| [33]And JosiahH2977 took awayH5493[H8686] all the abominationsH8441 out of all the countriesH776 that pertained to the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, and made all that were presentH4672[H8737] in IsraelH3478 to serveH5647[H8686], even to serveH5647[H8800] the LORDH3068 their GodH430. And all his daysH3117 they departedH5493[H8804] not from followingH310 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1. |
[33]And Josias removed all the abominations out of the whole land which belonged to the children of Israel, and caused all that were found in Jerusalem and in Israel, to serve the Lord their God all his days: he departed not from following the Lord God of his fathers. |
