[1]Utinam sustineretis modicum quid insipientiæ meæ, sed et supportare me: [1]Would to God, ye could suffer a little my foolishness, and in deed, ye suffer me.
[2]æmulor enim vos Dei æmulatione. Despondi enim vos uni viro, virginem castam exhibere Christo. [2]For I am jealous over you, with godly jealousy: for I have prepared you for one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ:
[3]Timeo autem ne sicut serpens Hevam seduxit astutia sua, ita corrumpantur sensus vestri, et excidant a simplicitate, quæ est in Christo. [3]But I fear lest as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupt from the simplicity that is in Christ.
[4]Nam si is qui venit, alium Christum prædicat, quem non prædicavimus, aut alium spiritum accipitis, quem non accepistis: aut aliud Evangelium, quod non recepistis: recte pateremini. [4]For if he that cometh, preacheth another Jesus than him whom we have preached: or if ye receive another spirit than that which ye have received: either another Gospel, than that ye have received, ye might well have suffered him.
[5]Existimo enim nihil me minus fecisse a magnis Apostolis. [5]Verily I suppose that I was not inferior to the very chief Apostles.
[6]Nam etsi imperitus sermone, sed non scientia, in omnibus autem manifestati sumus vobis. [6]And though I be rude in speaking, yet I am not so in knowledge, but among you we have been made manifest to the utmost, in all things.
[7]Aut numquid peccatum feci, meipsum humilians, ut vos exaltemini? quoniam gratis Evangelium Dei evangelizavi vobis? [7]Have I committed an offence, because I abased myself, that ye might be exalted, and because I preached to you the Gospel of God freely?
[8]Alias ecclesias expoliavi, accipiens stipendium ad ministerium vestrum. [8]I robbed other Churches, and took wages of them to do you service.
[9]Et cum essem apud vos, et egerem, nulli onerosus fui: nam quod mihi deerat, suppleverunt fratres, qui venerunt a Macedonia: et in omnibus sine onere me vobis servavi, et servabo. [9]And when I was present with you, and had need, I was not slothful to the hinderance of any man: for that which was lacking unto me, the brethren which came from Macedonia, supplied, and in all things I kept and will keep myself that I should not be grievous to you.
[10]Est veritas Christi in me, quoniam hæc gloriatio non infringetur in me in regionibus Achaiæ. [10]The truth of Christ is in me, that this rejoicing shall not be shut up against me in the regions of Achaia.
[11]Quare? quia non diligo vos? Deus scit. [11]Wherefore? Because I love you not? God knoweth.
[12]Quod autem facio, et faciam: ut amputem occasionem eorum qui volunt occasionem, ut in quo gloriantur, inveniantur sicut et nos. [12]But what I do, that will I do: that I may cut away occasion from them which desire occasion, that they might be found like unto us in that wherein they rejoice.
[13]Nam ejusmodi pseudoapostoli sunt operarii subdoli, transfigurantes se in apostolos Christi. [13]For such false apostles are deceitful workers, and transform themselves into the Apostles of Christ.
[14]Et non mirum: ipse enim Satanas transfigurat se in angelum lucis. [14]And no marvel: for Satan himself is transformed into an Angel of light.
[15]Non est ergo magnum, si ministri ejus transfigurentur velut ministri justitiæ: quorum finis erit secundum opera ipsorum. [15]Therefore it is no great thing, though his ministers transform themselves, as though they were the ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.
[16]Iterum dico (ne quis me putet insipientem esse, alioquin velut insipientem accipite me, ut et ego modicum quid glorier), [16]I say again, let no man think, that I am foolish: or else take me even as a fool, that I also may boast myself a little.
[17]quod loquor, non loquor secundum Deum, sed quasi in insipientia, in hac substantia gloriæ. [17]That I speak, I speak it not after the Lord: but as it were foolishly, in this my great boasting.
[18]Quoniam multi gloriantur secundum carnem: et ego gloriabor. [18]Seeing that many rejoice after the flesh, I will rejoice also.
[19]Libenter enim suffertis insipientes, cum sitis ipsi sapientes. [19]For ye suffer fools gladly, because that ye are wise.
[20]Sustinetis enim si quis vos in servitutem redigit, si quis devorat, si quis accipit, si quis extollitur, si quis in faciem vos cædit. [20]For ye suffer even if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take your goods, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.
[21]Secundum ignobilitatem dico, quasi nos infirmi fuerimus in hac parte. In quo quis audet (in insipientia dico) audeo et ego: [21]I speak as concerning the reproach: as though that we had been weak: but wherein any man is bold (I speak foolishly) I am bold also.
[22]Hebræi sunt, et ego: Israëlitæ sunt, et ego: semen Abrahæ sunt, et ego. [22]They are Hebrews, so am I: they are Israelites, so am I: they are the seed of Abraham, so am I:
[23]Ministri Christi sunt (ut minus sapiens dico), plus ego: in laboribus plurimis, in carceribus abundantius, in plagis supra modum, in mortibus frequenter. [23]They are the ministers of Christ (I speak as a fool) I am more: in labors more abundant: in stripes above measure: in prison more plenteously: in death oft.
[24]A Judæis quinquies, quadragenas, una minus, accepi. [24]Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
[25]Ter virgis cæsus sum, semel lapidatus sum: ter naufragium feci, nocte et die in profundo maris fui, [25]I was thrice beaten with rods: I was once stoned: I suffered thrice shipwreck: night and day have I been in the deep sea.
[26]in itineribus sæpe, periculis fluminum, periculis latronum, periculis ex genere, periculis ex gentibus, periculis in civitate, periculis in solitudine, periculis in mari, periculis in falsis fratribus: [26]In journeying I was often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of mine own nation, in perils among the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren,
[27]in labore et ærumna, in vigiliis multis, in fame et siti, in jejuniis multis, in frigore et nuditate, [27]In weariness and painfulness, in watching often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and in nakedness.
[28]præter illa quæ extrinsecus sunt, instantia mea quotidiana, sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum. [28]Beside the things which are outward, I am cumbered daily, and have the care of all the Churches.
[29]Quis infirmatur, et ego non infirmor? quis scandalizatur, et ego non uror? [29]Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
[30]Si gloriari oportet, quæ infirmitatis meæ sunt, gloriabor. [30]If I must needs rejoice, I will rejoice of mine infirmities.
[31]Deus et Pater Domini nostri Jesu Christi, qui est benedictus in sæcula, scit quod non mentior. [31]The God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.
[32]Damasci præpositus gentis Aretæ regis custodiebat civitatem Damascenorum ut me comprehenderet: [32]In Damascus the governor of the people under King Aretas, laid watch in the city of the Damascenes, and would have caught me.
[33]et per fenestram in sporta dimissus sum per murum, et sic effugi manus ejus. [33]But at a window was I let down in a basket through the wall, and escaped his hands.
