[1]And I determined this with myself, that I would not again come to you in sadness. |
[1]But I determined thus in myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness. |
[2]For if I should make you sad, who would make me joyful, unless he whom I had made sad? |
[2]For if I make you sorry, who is he then that should make me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me? |
[3]And I wrote that very thing to you, lest when I came, those persons whom I ought to make joyful, should make me sad. For I have confidence concerning you, that my joy is the joy of you all. |
[3]And I wrote this same thing unto you, lest when I came, I should take heaviness of them, of whom I ought to rejoice: this confidence have I in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all. |
[4]And in much affliction, and in anguish of heart, I wrote those things to you, with many tears; not that ye might have sorrow, but that ye might know the exceeding love I have for you. |
[4]For in great affliction, and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears: not that ye should be made sorry, but that ye might perceive the love which I have, specially unto you. |
[5]And if one hath caused grief, he hath not grieved me [only], but,-that the declaration may not bear too hard on you-in a measure, all of you. |
[5]And if any hath caused sorrow, the same hath not made me sorry, but partly (lest I should more charge him) you all. |
[6]And sufficient for him, is this rebuke proceeding from many: |
[6]It is sufficient unto the same man, that he was rebuked of many. |
[7]so that, on the other hand, ye ought to forgive him and console him; lest he who is such a man, should be swallowed up with excessive grief. |
[7]So that now contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him and comfort him, lest the same should be swallowed up with over much heaviness. |
[8]I therefore beseech you, that ye confirm to him your love. |
[8]Wherefore, I pray you, that you would confirm your love towards him. |
[9]For it was for this also that I wrote [to you], that I might learn by a trial, whether ye would be obedient in every thing. |
[9]For this cause also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye would be obedient in all things. |
[10]And whom ye forgive, I also [forgive]: for that which I forgave to any one, for your sakes I forgave it, in the presence of the Messiah; |
[10]To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for verily if I forgave anything, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the sight of Christ, |
[11]lest Satan should overreach us; for we know his devices. |
[11]Lest Satan should circumvent us: for we are not ignorant of his enterprises. |
[12]Moreover, when I came to Troas in announcing the Messiah, and a door was opened to me by the Lord, |
[12]Â Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's Gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, |
[13]there was no quietude in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: and I took leave of them, and went into Macedonia. |
[13]I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother, but took my leave of them, and went away into Macedonia. |
[14]But thanks be to God, who always procureth us a triumph in the Messiah, and manifesteth by us the odor of the knowledge of him in every place. |
[14]Now thanks be unto God which always maketh us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. |
[15]For, through the Messiah, we are unto God a sweet odor, in them that live and in them that perish: |
[15]For we are unto God the sweet savor of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them which perish. |
[16]to these, an odor of death unto death; and to those, an odor of life unto life. And who is adequate to these things ! |
[16]To the one we are the savor of death, unto death, and to the other the savor of life, unto life, and who is sufficient for these things? |
[17]For we are not like others, who dilute the words of God; but as of the truth, and as of God, we speak in the Messiah before God. |
[17]For we are not as many, which make merchandise of the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God in the sight of God speak we in Christ. |
