[1]And it came to pass, after the yearH8141 was expiredH8666, at the timeH6256 when kingsH4428[H8675][H4397] go forthH3318[H8800] to battle, that DavidH1732 sentH7971[H8799] JoabH3097, and his servantsH5650 with him, and all IsraelH3478; and they destroyedH7843[H8686] the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and besiegedH6696[H8799] RabbahH7237. But DavidH1732 tarried stillH3427[H8802] at JerusalemH3389. [1]And when the year was expired in the time when kings go forth to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel, who destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah: but David remained in Jerusalem.
[2]And it came to pass in an eveningtideH6153[H6256], that DavidH1732 aroseH6965[H8799] from off his bedH4904, and walkedH1980[H8691] upon the roofH1406 of the king'sH4428 houseH1004: and from the roofH1406 he sawH7200[H8799] a womanH802 washingH7364[H8801] herself; and the womanH802 was veryH3966 beautifulH2896 to look uponH4758. [2]And when it was evening tide, David arose out of his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's palace: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself: and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
[3]And DavidH1732 sentH7971[H8799] and enquiredH1875[H8799] after the womanH802. And one saidH559[H8799], Is not this BathshebaH1339, the daughterH1323 of EliamH463, the wifeH802 of UriahH223 the HittiteH2850? [3]And David sent and inquired what woman it was: and one said, Is not this Bath-sheba the daughter of Eliam, wife to Uriah the Hittite?
[4]And DavidH1732 sentH7971[H8799] messengersH4397, and tookH3947[H8799] her; and she came inH935[H8799] unto him, and he layH7901[H8799] with her; for she was purifiedH6942[H8693] from her uncleannessH2932: and she returnedH7725[H8799] unto her houseH1004. [4]Then David sent messengers, and took her away: and she came unto him and he lay with her: (now she was purified from her uncleanness) and she returned unto her house.
[5]And the womanH802 conceivedH2029[H8799], and sentH7971[H8799] and toldH5046[H8686] DavidH1732, and saidH559[H8799], I am with childH2030. [5]And the woman conceived: therefore she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
[6]And DavidH1732 sentH7971[H8799] to JoabH3097, saying, SendH7971[H8798] me UriahH223 the HittiteH2850. And JoabH3097 sentH7971[H8799] UriahH223 to DavidH1732. [6]Then David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
[7]And when UriahH223 was comeH935[H8799] unto him, DavidH1732 demandedH7592[H8799] of him how JoabH3097 didH7965, and how the peopleH5971 didH7965, and how the warH4421 prosperedH7965. [7]And when Uriah came unto him, David demanded him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.
[8]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] to UriahH223, Go downH3381[H8798] to thy houseH1004, and washH7364[H8798] thy feetH7272. And UriahH223 departed outH3318[H8799] of the king'sH4428 houseH1004, and there followedH310 him a messH4864 of meat from the kingH4428. [8]Afterward David said to Uriah, Go down to thine house, and wash thy feet. So Uriah departed out of the king's palace, and the king sent a present after him.
[9]But UriahH223 sleptH7901[H8799] at the doorH6607 of the king'sH4428 houseH1004 with all the servantsH5650 of his lordH113, and went not downH3381[H8804] to his houseH1004. [9]But Uriah slept at the door of the king's palace with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
[10]And when they had toldH5046[H8686] DavidH1732, sayingH559[H8800], UriahH223 went not downH3381[H8804] unto his houseH1004, DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto UriahH223, CamestH935[H8802] thou not from thy journeyH1870? why then didst thou not go downH3381[H8804] unto thine houseH1004? [10]Then they told David, saying, Uriah went not down to his house: and David said unto Uriah, Comest thou not from thy journey? Why didst thou not go down to thine house?
[11]And UriahH223 saidH559[H8799] unto DavidH1732, The arkH727, and IsraelH3478, and JudahH3063, abideH3427[H8802] in tentsH5521; and my lordH113 JoabH3097, and the servantsH5650 of my lordH113, are encampedH2583[H8802] in the openH6440 fieldsH7704; shall IH589 then goH935[H8799] into mine houseH1004, to eatH398[H8800] and to drinkH8354[H8800], and to lieH7901[H8800] with my wifeH802? as thou livestH2416, and as thy soulH5315 livethH2416, I will not doH6213[H8799] this thingH1697. [11]Then Uriah answered David, The ark and Israel, and Judah dwell in tents: and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord abide in the open fields: shall I then go into mine house to eat and drink, and lie with my wife? By thy life, and by the life of thy soul, I will not do this thing.
[12]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] to UriahH223, TarryH3427[H8798] here to dayH3117 also, and to morrowH4279 I will let thee departH7971[H8762]. So UriahH223 abodeH3427[H8799] in JerusalemH3389 that dayH3117, and the morrowH4283. [12]Then David said unto Uriah, Tarry yet this day, and tomorrow I will send thee away. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
[13]And when DavidH1732 had calledH7121[H8799] him, he did eatH398[H8799] and drinkH8354[H8799] beforeH6440 him; and he made him drunkH7937[H8762]: and at evenH6153 he went outH3318[H8799] to lieH7901[H8800] on his bedH4904 with the servantsH5650 of his lordH113, but went not downH3381[H8804] to his houseH1004. [13]Then David called him, and he did eat and drink before him, and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his Lord, but went not down to his house.
[14]And it came to pass in the morningH1242, that DavidH1732 wroteH3789[H8799] a letterH5612 to JoabH3097, and sentH7971[H8799] it by the handH3027 of UriahH223. [14]And on the morrow David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
[15]And he wroteH3789[H8799] in the letterH5612, sayingH559[H8800], SetH3051[H8798] ye UriahH223 in the forefrontH6440[H4136] of the hottestH2389 battleH4421, and retireH7725[H8804] ye from himH310, that he may be smittenH5221[H8738], and dieH4191.[H8804] [15]And he wrote thus in the letter, Put ye Uriah in the forefront of the strength of the battle, and recule ye back from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
[16]And it came to pass, when JoabH3097 observedH8104[H8800] the cityH5892, that he assignedH5414[H8799] UriahH223 unto a placeH4725 where he knewH3045[H8804] that valiantH2428 men wereH582. [16]So when Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah unto a place, where he knew that strong men were.
[17]And the menH582 of the cityH5892 went outH3318[H8799], and foughtH3898[H8735] with JoabH3097: and there fellH5307[H8799] some of the peopleH5971 of the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732; and UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 diedH4191 alsoH8799. [17]And the men of the city came out, and fought with Joab: and there fell of the people of the servants of David, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
[18]Then JoabH3097 sentH7971[H8799] and toldH5046[H8686] DavidH1732 all the thingsH1697 concerning the warH4421; [18]Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war,
[19]And chargedH6680[H8762] the messengerH4397, sayingH559[H8800], When thou hast made an endH3615[H8763] of tellingH1696[H8763] the mattersH1697 of the warH4421 unto the kingH4428, [19]And he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the matters of the war unto the king,
[20]And if so be that the king'sH4428 wrathH2534 ariseH5927[H8799], and he sayH559[H8804] unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nighH5066[H8738] unto the cityH5892 when ye did fightH3898[H8736]? knewH3045[H8804] ye not that they would shootH3384[H8686] from the wallH2346? [20]And if the king's anger arise, so that he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye unto the city to fight? Knew ye not that they would hurl from the wall?
[21]Who smoteH5221[H8689] AbimelechH40 the sonH1121 of JerubbeshethH3380? did not a womanH802 castH7993[H8689] a pieceH6400 of a millstoneH7393 upon him from the wallH2346, that he diedH4191[H8799] in ThebezH8405? why went ye nighH5066[H8738] the wallH2346? then sayH559[H8804] thou, Thy servantH5650 UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 is deadH4191 alsoH8804. [21]Who smote Abimelech son of Jerubesheth? Did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, and he died in Thebez? Why went you nigh the wall? Then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.
[22]So the messengerH4397 wentH3212[H8799], and cameH935[H8799] and shewedH5046[H8686] DavidH1732 all that JoabH3097 had sentH7971 him forH8804. [22]So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.
[23]And the messengerH4397 saidH559[H8799] unto DavidH1732, Surely the menH582 prevailedH1396[H8804] against us, and came outH3318[H8799] unto us into the fieldH7704, and we were upon them even unto the enteringH6607 of the gateH8179. [23]And the messenger said unto David, Certainly the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, but we pursued them unto the entering of the gate.
[24]And the shootersH3384[H8688] shotH3384[H8686] from off the wallH2346 upon thy servantsH5650; and some of the king'sH4428 servantsH5650 be deadH4191[H8799], and thy servantH5650 UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 is deadH4191 alsoH8804. [24]But the shooters shot from the wall against thy servants, and some of the king's servants be dead: and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.
[25]Then DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto the messengerH4397, Thus shalt thou sayH559[H8799] unto JoabH3097, Let not this thingH1697 displeaseH3415[H8799][H5869] thee, for the swordH2719 devourethH398[H8799] one as well as anotherH2090: make thy battleH4421 more strongH2388[H8685] against the cityH5892, and overthrowH2040[H8798] it: and encourageH2388 thou himH8761. [25]Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing trouble thee: for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city and destroy it, and encourage thou him.
[26]And when the wifeH802 of UriahH223 heardH8085[H8799] that UriahH223 her husbandH376 was deadH4191[H8804], she mournedH5594[H8799] for her husbandH1167. [26]And when the wife of Uriah heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for her husband.
[27]And when the mourningH60 was pastH5674[H8799], DavidH1732 sentH7971[H8799] and fetchedH622[H8799] her to his houseH1004, and she became his wifeH802, and bareH3205[H8799] him a sonH1121. But the thingH1697 that DavidH1732 had doneH6213[H8804] displeasedH3415[H8799][H5869] the LORDH3068. [27]So when the mourning was past, David sent and took her into his house, and she became his wife, and bear him a son: but the thing that David had done, displeased the Lord.
