[1]And it came to pass after thisH310, that AbsalomH53 preparedH6213[H8799] him chariotsH4818 and horsesH5483, and fiftyH2572 menH376 to runH7323[H8801] before himH6440. [1]After this, Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
[2]And AbsalomH53 rose up earlyH7925[H8689], and stoodH5975[H8804] besideH3027 the wayH1870 of the gateH8179: and it was so, that when any manH376 that had a controversyH7379 cameH935[H8800] to the kingH4428 for judgmentH4941, then AbsalomH53 calledH7121[H8799] unto him, and saidH559[H8799], Of whatH335 cityH5892 art thou? And he saidH559[H8799], Thy servantH5650 is of oneH259 of the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478. [2]And Absalom rose up early, and stood hard by the entering in of the gate: and every man that had any matter, and came to the king for judgment, him did Absalom call unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he answered; Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
[3]And AbsalomH53 saidH559[H8799] unto him, SeeH7200[H8798], thy mattersH1697 are goodH2896 and rightH5228; but there is no man deputed of the kingH4428 to hearH8085 theeH8802. [3]Then Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and righteous, but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.
[4]AbsalomH53 saidH559[H8799] moreover, Oh that I were madeH7760[H8799] judgeH8199[H8802] in the landH776, that every manH376 which hath any suitH7379 or causeH4941 might comeH935[H8799] H6663unto me, and I would do him justiceH8689 [4]Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any matter of controversy, might come to me, that I might do him justice.
[5]And it was so, that when any manH376 came nighH7126[H8800] to him to do him obeisanceH7812[H8692], he put forthH7971[H8804] his handH3027, and tookH2388[H8689] him, and kissedH5401 himH8804. [5]And when any man came near to him, and did him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
[6]And on this mannerH1697 didH6213[H8799] AbsalomH53 to all IsraelH3478 that cameH935[H8799] to the kingH4428 for judgmentH4941: so AbsalomH53 stoleH1589[H8762] the heartsH3820 of the menH582 of IsraelH3478. [6]And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel, that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
[7]And it came to pass afterH7093 fortyH705 yearsH8141, that AbsalomH53 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, I pray thee, let me goH3212[H8799] and payH7999[H8762] my vowH5088, which I have vowedH5087[H8804] unto the LORDH3068, in HebronH2275. [7]And after forty years, Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go to Hebron, and render my vow which I have vowed unto the Lord.
[8]For thy servantH5650 vowedH5087[H8804] a vowH5088 while I abodeH3427[H8800] at GeshurH1650 in SyriaH758, sayingH559[H8800], If the LORDH3068 shall bring me againH7725[H8799][H8676][H7725][H8686] indeed to JerusalemH3389, then I will serveH5647[H8804] the LORDH3068. [8]For thy servant vowed a vow when I remained at Geshur, in Aram, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, I will serve the Lord.
[9]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto him, GoH3212[H8798] in peaceH7965. So he aroseH6965[H8799], and wentH3212[H8799] to HebronH2275. [9]And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.
[10]But AbsalomH53 sentH7971[H8799] spiesH7270[H8764] throughout all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559[H8800], As soon as ye hearH8085[H8800] the soundH6963 of the trumpetH7782, then ye shall sayH559[H8804], AbsalomH53 reignethH4427[H8804] in HebronH2275. [10]Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, When ye hear the sound of the trumpet, Ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.
[11]And with AbsalomH53 wentH1980[H8804] two hundredH3967 menH376 out of JerusalemH3389, that were calledH7121[H8803]; and they wentH1980[H8802] in their simplicityH8537, and they knewH3045[H8804] not any thingH1697. [11]And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called: and they went in their simplicity, knowing nothing.
[12]And AbsalomH53 sentH7971[H8799] for AhithophelH302 the GiloniteH1526, David'sH1732 counsellorH3289[H8802], from his cityH5892, even from GilohH1542, while he offeredH2076[H8800] sacrificesH2077. And the conspiracyH7195 was strongH533; for the peopleH5971 increasedH7227 continuallyH1980[H8802] with AbsalomH53. [12]Also Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite David's counselor, from his city Giloh, while he offered sacrifices: and the treason was great: for the people increased still with Absalom.
[13]And there cameH935[H8799] a messengerH5046[H8688] to DavidH1732, sayingH559[H8800], The heartsH3820 of the menH376 of IsraelH3478 are afterH310 AbsalomH53. [13]Then came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are turned after Absalom.
[14]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto all his servantsH5650 that were with him at JerusalemH3389, AriseH6965[H8798], and let us fleeH1272[H8799]; for we shall not else escapeH6413 fromH6440 AbsalomH53: make speedH4116[H8761] to departH3212[H8800], lest he overtakeH5381[H8689] us suddenlyH4116[H8762], and bringH5080[H8689] evilH7451 upon us, and smiteH5221[H8689] the cityH5892 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719. [14]Then David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Up, and let us flee: for we shall not escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he come suddenly and take us, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
[15]And the king'sH4428 servantsH5650 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, Behold, thy servantsH5650 are ready to do whatsoever my lordH113 the kingH4428 shall appointH977.[H8799] [15]And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, thy servants are ready to do according to all that my lord the king shall appoint.
[16]And the kingH4428 went forthH3318[H8799], and all his householdH1004 afterH7272 him. And the kingH4428 leftH5800[H8799] tenH6235 womenH802, which were concubinesH6370, to keepH8104[H8800] the houseH1004. [16]So the king departed and all his household after him, and the king left ten concubines to keep the house.
[17]And the kingH4428 went forthH3318[H8799], and all the peopleH5971 afterH7272 him, and tarriedH5975[H8799] in a placeH1004 that was far offH4801[H8677].[H1023] [17]And the king went forth and all the people after him, and tarried in a place far off.
[18]And all his servantsH5650 passed onH5674[H8802] besideH3027 him; and all the CherethitesH3774, and all the PelethitesH6432, and all the GittitesH1663, sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376 which cameH935[H8804] afterH7272 him from GathH1661, passed onH5674[H8802] beforeH6440 the kingH4428. [18]And all his servants went about him, and all the Cherethites and all the Pelethites and all the Gittites, even six hundred men which were come after him from Gath, went before the king.
[19]Then saidH559[H8799] the kingH4428 to IttaiH863 the GittiteH1663, Wherefore goestH3212[H8799] thou also with us? returnH7725[H8798] to thy placeH4725, and abideH3427[H8798] with the kingH4428: for thou art a strangerH5237, and also an exileH1540.[H8802] [19]Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore comest thou also with us? Return and abide with the king, for thou art a stranger: depart thou therefore to thy place.
[20]Whereas thou camestH935[H8800] but yesterdayH8543, should I this dayH3117 make thee goH3212[H8800] up and downH5128[H8686][H8675][H5128][H8799] with us? seeing I goH1980[H8802] whither I may, returnH7725[H8798] thou, and take backH7725[H8685] thy brethrenH251: mercyH2617 and truth be with theeH571. [20]Thou camest yesterday, and should I cause thee to wander today and go with us? I will go whither I can: therefore return thou and carry again thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
[21]And IttaiH863 answeredH6030[H8799] the kingH4428, and saidH559[H8799], As the LORDH3068 livethH2416, and as my lordH113 the kingH4428 livethH2416, surely in what placeH4725 my lordH113 the kingH4428 shall be, whether in deathH4194 or lifeH2416, even there also will thy servant beH5650. [21]And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there surely will thy servant be.
[22]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] to IttaiH863, GoH3212[H8798] and pass overH5674[H8798]. And IttaiH863 the GittiteH1663 passed overH5674[H8799], and all his menH582, and all the little ones that were with himH2945. [22]Then David said to Ittai, Come, and go forward. And Ittai the Gittite went, and all his men, and all the children that were with him.
[23]And all the countryH776 weptH1058[H8802] with a loudH1419 voiceH6963, and all the peopleH5971 passed overH5674[H8802]: the kingH4428 also himself passed overH5674[H8802] the brookH5158 KidronH6939, and all the peopleH5971 passed overH5674[H8802], towardH6440 the wayH1870 of the wildernessH4057. [23]And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people went forward, but the king passed over the brook Kidron: and all the people went over toward the way of the wilderness.
[24]And lo ZadokH6659 also, and all the LevitesH3881 were with him, bearingH5375[H8802] the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of GodH430: and they set downH3332[H8686] the arkH727 of GodH430; and AbiatharH54 went upH5927[H8799], until all the peopleH5971 had doneH8552[H8800] passingH5674[H8800] out of the cityH5892. [24]And lo, Zadok also was there, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God, and Abiathar went up until the people were all come out of the city.
[25]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto ZadokH6659, Carry backH7725[H8685] the arkH727 of GodH430 into the cityH5892: if I shall findH4672[H8799] favourH2580 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068, he will bring me againH7725[H8689], and shewH7200[H8689] me both it, and his habitationH5116: [25]Then the king said unto Zadok, Carry the ark of God again into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and the tabernacle thereof.
[26]But if he thus sayH559[H8799], I have no delightH2654[H8804] in thee; behold, here am I, let him doH6213[H8799] to me as seemethH5869 good unto himH2896. [26]But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee, behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good in his eyes.
[27]The kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] also unto ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, Art not thou a seerH7200[H8802]? returnH7725[H8798] into the cityH5892 in peaceH7965, and your twoH8147 sonsH1121 with you, AhimaazH290 thy sonH1121, and JonathanH3083 the sonH1121 of AbiatharH54. [27]The king said again unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you: to wit, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
[28]SeeH7200[H8798], I will tarryH4102[H8700] in the plainH6160[H8675][H5679] of the wildernessH4057, until there comeH935[H8800] wordH1697 from you to certifyH5046 meH8687. [28]Behold, I will tarry in the fields of the wilderness, until there come some word from you to be told me.
[29]ZadokH6659 therefore and AbiatharH54 carriedH7725 the arkH727 of GodH430 againH7725[H8686] to JerusalemH3389: and they tarriedH3427 thereH8799. [29]Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem, and they tarried there.
[30]And DavidH1732 went upH5927[H8802] by the ascentH4608 of mount OlivetH2132, and weptH1058[H8802] as he went upH5927[H8802], and had his headH7218 coveredH2645[H8802], and he wentH1980[H8802] barefootH3182: and all the peopleH5971 that was with him coveredH2645[H8804] every manH376 his headH7218, and they went upH5927[H8804], weepingH1058[H8800] as they went upH5927.[H8800] [30]And David went up the mount of Olives and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and went barefooted: and all the people that was with him, had every man his head covered, and as they went up, they wept.
[31]And one toldH5046[H8689] DavidH1732, sayingH559[H8800], AhithophelH302 is among the conspiratorsH7194[H8802] with AbsalomH53. And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799], O LORDH3068, I pray thee, turn the counselH6098 of AhithophelH302 into foolishnessH5528.[H8761] [31]Then one told David, saying, Ahithophel is one of them that have conspired with Absalom: and David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.
[32]And it came to pass, that when DavidH1732 was comeH935[H8804] to the topH7218 of the mount, where he worshippedH7812[H8691] GodH430, behold, HushaiH2365 the ArchiteH757 came to meetH7125[H8800] him with his coatH3801 rentH7167[H8803], and earthH127 upon his headH7218: [32]Then David came to the top of the mount where he worshiped God: and behold, Hushai the Archite came against him with his coat torn, and having earth upon his head.
[33]Unto whom DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799], If thou passest onH5674[H8804] with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto meH4853: [33]Unto whom David said, If thou go with me, thou shalt be a burden unto me.
[34]But if thou returnH7725[H8799] to the cityH5892, and sayH559[H8804] unto AbsalomH53, I will be thy servantH5650, O kingH4428; as I have been thy father'sH1 servantH5650 hithertoH227, so will I now also be thy servantH5650: then mayest thou for me defeatH6565[H8689] the counselH6098 of AhithophelH302. [34]But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king, (as I have been in time past thy father's servant, so will I now be thy servant) then thou mayest bring me the counsel of Ahithophel to naught.
[35]And hast thou not there with thee ZadokH6659 and AbiatharH54 the priestsH3548? therefore it shall be, that what thingH1697 soever thou shalt hearH8085[H8799] out of the king'sH4428 houseH1004, thou shalt tellH5046[H8686] it to ZadokH6659 and AbiatharH54 the priestsH3548. [35]And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? Therefore whatsoever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt show to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
[36]Behold, they have there with them their twoH8147 sonsH1121, AhimaazH290 Zadok'sH6659 son, and JonathanH3083 Abiathar'sH54 son; and by themH3027 ye shall sendH7971[H8804] unto me every thingH1697 that ye can hearH8085.[H8799] [36]Behold, there are with them their two sons: Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son: by them also shall ye send me everything that ye can hear.
[37]So HushaiH2365 David'sH1732 friendH7463 cameH935[H8799] into the cityH5892, and AbsalomH53 cameH935[H8799] into JerusalemH3389. [37]So Hushai David's friend went into the city: and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
