| [1]NOW when Fes'tus arrived at Caesa- re'a, after three days he went up to Jerusalem. |
[1]Φῆστος οὖν ἐπιβὰς τῇ ἐπαρχείᾳ μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἀνέβη εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἀπὸ Καισαρείας, |
| [2]Then the high priests and Jewish leaders informed him against Paul. |
[2]ἐνεφάνισάν ⸀τε αὐτῷ ⸂οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς⸃ καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τῶν Ἰουδαίων κατὰ τοῦ Παύλου, καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν |
| [3]They besought him as a favor to send for him and bring him to Jerusalem, for they were plotting to kill him on the way. |
[3]αἰτούμενοι χάριν κατʼ αὐτοῦ ὅπως μεταπέμψηται αὐτὸν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, ἐνέδραν ποιοῦντες ἀνελεῖν αὐτὸν κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν. |
| [4]But Fes'tus answered that Paul should be kept at Caes-a-re'a, and that he himself was shortly going there. |
[4]ὁ μὲν οὖν Φῆστος ἀπεκρίθη τηρεῖσθαι τὸν Παῦλον ⸂εἰς Καισάρειαν⸃, ἑαυτὸν δὲ μέλλειν ἐν τάχει ἐκπορεύεσθαι· |
| [5]Therefore, said he, let those who are able among you come down with us and accuse the man about any offense which can be found against him. |
[5]Οἱ οὖν ⸂ἐν ὑμῖν, φησίν, δυνατοὶ⸃ συγκαταβάντες εἴ τί ἐστιν ἐν τῷ ἀνδρὶ ⸀ἄτοπον κατηγορείτωσαν αὐτοῦ. |
| [6]And when he had tarried there eight or ten days, he went down to Caes-a-re'a, and the next day he sat on the judgment seat and commanded Paul to be brought. |
[6]Διατρίψας δὲ ἐν αὐτοῖς ἡμέρας ⸂οὐ πλείους ὀκτὼ⸃ ἢ δέκα, καταβὰς εἰς Καισάρειαν, τῇ ἐπαύριον καθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἐκέλευσεν τὸν Παῦλον ἀχθῆναι. |
| [7]And when he was come, the Jews who had come from Jerusalem surrounded him, and brought against him many serious charges which they could not prove. |
[7]παραγενομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ περιέστησαν ⸀αὐτὸν οἱ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων καταβεβηκότες Ἰουδαῖοι, πολλὰ καὶ βαρέα αἰτιώματα ⸀καταφέροντες ἃ οὐκ ἴσχυον ἀποδεῖξαι, |
| [8]Then Paul answered, I have committed no offense against the Jewish law, or against the temple, or against Caesar. |
[8]⸂τοῦ Παύλου ἀπολογουμένου⸃ ὅτι Οὔτε εἰς τὸν νόμον τῶν Ἰουδαίων οὔτε εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν οὔτε εἰς Καίσαρά τι ἥμαρτον. |
| [9]But Festus, because he was willing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, Would you be willing to go to Jerusalem and there be tried of these things before me? |
[9]ὁ Φῆστος δὲ ⸂θέλων τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις⸃ χάριν καταθέσθαι ἀποκριθεὶς τῷ Παύλῳ εἶπεν· Θέλεις εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἀναβὰς ἐκεῖ περὶ τούτων ⸀κριθῆναι ἐπʼ ἐμοῦ; |
| [10]Paul answered and said, I stand before Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be tried: I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you very well know. |
[10]εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Παῦλος· ⸂Ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος Καίσαρος ἑστώς⸃ εἰμι, οὗ με δεῖ κρίνεσθαι. Ἰουδαίους οὐδὲν ⸀ἠδίκησα, ὡς καὶ σὺ κάλλιον ἐπιγινώσκεις. |
| [11]If I had committed any crime or had done anything worthy of death, I should not refuse to die: but if there is no truth in the charges made against me, then no man may deliver me to them just to please them. I appeal to Caesar. |
[11]εἰ μὲν ⸀οὖν ἀδικῶ καὶ ἄξιον θανάτου πέπραχά τι, οὐ παραιτοῦμαι τὸ ἀποθανεῖν· εἰ δὲ οὐδέν ἐστιν ὧν οὗτοι κατηγοροῦσίν μου, οὐδείς με δύναται αὐτοῖς χαρίσασθαι· Καίσαρα ἐπικαλοῦμαι. |
| [12]Festus, when he had conferred with his counsellors, decreed, You have appealed to Caesar. You will go to Caesar. |
[12]τότε ὁ Φῆστος συλλαλήσας μετὰ τοῦ συμβουλίου ἀπεκρίθη· Καίσαρα ἐπικέκλησαι, ἐπὶ Καίσαρα πορεύσῃ. |
| [13]Some days later, King A-grip'pa and Ber-ni'ce came down to Caes-a-re'a to greet Festus. |
[13]Ἡμερῶν δὲ διαγενομένων τινῶν Ἀγρίππας ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ Βερνίκη κατήντησαν εἰς Καισάρειαν ἀσπασάμενοι τὸν Φῆστον. |
| [14]And when they had been with him several days, Festus related Paul's case to the king, saying, There is a certain prisoner left by Felix: |
[14]ὡς δὲ πλείους ἡμέρας ⸀διέτριβον ἐκεῖ, ὁ Φῆστος τῷ βασιλεῖ ἀνέθετο τὰ κατὰ τὸν Παῦλον λέγων· Ἀνήρ τίς ἐστιν καταλελειμμένος ὑπὸ Φήλικος δέσμιος, |
| [15]And when I was in Jerusalem, the high priests and the elders of the Jews informed me about him, and asked to have judgment against him. |
[15]περὶ οὗ γενομένου μου εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἐνεφάνισαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τῶν Ἰουδαίων, αἰτούμενοι κατʼ αὐτοῦ ⸀καταδίκην· |
| [16]I told them, It is not the Roman custom to give up a man to be slain, until his accusers come and accuse him face to face, and give him a chance to defend himself against the charges. |
[16]πρὸς οὓς ἀπεκρίθην ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἔθος Ῥωμαίοις χαρίζεσθαί τινα ⸀ἄνθρωπον πρὶν ἢ ὁ κατηγορούμενος κατὰ πρόσωπον ἔχοι τοὺς κατηγόρους τόπον τε ἀπολογίας λάβοι περὶ τοῦ ἐγκλήματος. |
| [17]So when I arrived here, the following day, without any delay, I sat on the judgment seat and commanded the man to be brought before me. |
[17]συνελθόντων ⸀οὖν ἐνθάδε ἀναβολὴν μηδεμίαν ποιησάμενος τῇ ἑξῆς καθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἐκέλευσα ἀχθῆναι τὸν ἄνδρα· |
| [18]When his accusers stood up with him, they were unable to prove, as I had expected, any serious charges against him. |
[18]περὶ οὗ σταθέντες οἱ κατήγοροι οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν ⸀ἔφερον ὧν ⸂ἐγὼ ὑπενόουν⸃ ⸀πονηρῶν, |
| [19]But they had certain grievances against him relative to their own worship and to one named Jesus, now dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. |
[19]ζητήματα δέ τινα περὶ τῆς ἰδίας δεισιδαιμονίας εἶχον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ περί τινος Ἰησοῦ τεθνηκότος, ὃν ἔφασκεν ὁ Παῦλος ζῆν. |
| [20]And because I was not well acquainted with their controversy, I said to Paul. Would you be willing to go to Jerusalem, and there be tried of these matters? |
[20]ἀπορούμενος δὲ ἐγὼ τὴν περὶ ⸀τούτων ζήτησιν ἔλεγον εἰ βούλοιτο πορεύεσθαι εἰς ⸀Ἱεροσόλυμα κἀκεῖ κρίνεσθαι περὶ τούτων. |
| [21]But he appealed to be kept as a prisoner for a trial before Cae'sar. I accordingly commanded him to be kept in custody till I might send him to Cae'sar. |
[21]τοῦ δὲ Παύλου ἐπικαλεσαμένου τηρηθῆναι αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν τοῦ Σεβαστοῦ διάγνωσιν, ἐκέλευσα τηρεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ἕως οὗ ⸀ἀναπέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς Καίσαρα. |
| [22]Then A-grip'pa said to Festus, I would like to hear this man myself; and Festus replied, Tomorrow, you shall hear him. |
[22]Ἀγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν ⸀Φῆστον· Ἐβουλόμην καὶ αὐτὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀκοῦσαι. ⸀Αὔριον, φησίν, ἀκούσῃ αὐτοῦ. |
| [23]The next day A-grip'pa and Ber-ni'ce came with great pomp, and entered into the court house, accompanied by the chief captains and principal men of the city. Festus commanded and Paul was brought in. |
[23]Τῇ οὖν ἐπαύριον ἐλθόντος τοῦ Ἀγρίππα καὶ τῆς Βερνίκης μετὰ πολλῆς φαντασίας καὶ εἰσελθόντων εἰς τὸ ἀκροατήριον σύν ⸀τε χιλιάρχοις καὶ ἀνδράσιν τοῖς κατʼ ⸀ἐξοχὴν τῆς πόλεως καὶ κελεύσαντος τοῦ Φήστου ἤχθη ὁ Παῦλος. |
| [24]Then Festus said, King A-grip'pa and all men who are here present with us, against this man whom you see, all the Jewish people have complained to me both at Jerusalem and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer. |
[24]καί φησιν ὁ Φῆστος· Ἀγρίππα βασιλεῦ καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαρόντες ἡμῖν ἄνδρες, θεωρεῖτε τοῦτον περὶ οὗ ⸀ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν Ἰουδαίων ⸀ἐνέτυχόν μοι ἔν τε Ἱεροσολύμοις καὶ ἐνθάδε, ⸀βοῶντες μὴ δεῖν ⸂αὐτὸν ζῆν⸃ μηκέτι. |
| [25]But when I found he had done nothing worthy of death, and because he himself had appealed to be kept in custody for a trial before Caesar, I commanded to send him. |
[25]ἐγὼ δὲ ⸀κατελαβόμην μηδὲν ἄξιον ⸂αὐτὸν θανάτου⸃ πεπραχέναι, ⸀αὐτοῦ δὲ τούτου ἐπικαλεσαμένου τὸν Σεβαστὸν ἔκρινα ⸀πέμπειν. |
| [26]But I do not know what to write Caesar concerning him, therefore I was pleased to bring him before you, and especially before you, O King A-grip'pa, so that when he is questioned, I may find somewhat to write. |
[26]περὶ οὗ ἀσφαλές τι γράψαι τῷ κυρίῳ οὐκ ἔχω· διὸ προήγαγον αὐτὸν ἐφʼ ὑμῶν καὶ μάλιστα ἐπὶ σοῦ, βασιλεῦ Ἀγρίππα, ὅπως τῆς ἀνακρίσεως γενομένης σχῶ τί ⸀γράψω· |
| [27]For it is not proper to send a prisoner, without writing down the charges against him. |
[27]ἄλογον γάρ μοι δοκεῖ πέμποντα δέσμιον μὴ καὶ τὰς κατʼ αὐτοῦ αἰτίας σημᾶναι. |
