| [1]For I wish you to know how great a conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, |
[1]For I would ye knew what great fighting I have for your sakes, and for them of Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my person in the flesh, |
| [2]that their hearts may be comforted, being united in love, and to all riches of the full assurance of the understanding, to the full knowledge of the secret of the God and Father, and of the Christ, |
[2]That their hearts might be comforted and they knit together in love, and in all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to know the mystery of God even the Father, and of Christ: |
| [3]in whom are all the treasures of the wisdom and the knowledge hid, |
[3]In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. |
| [4]and this I say, that no one may beguile you in enticing words, |
[4]And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. |
| [5]for if even in the flesh I am absent -- yet in the spirit I am with you, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in regard to Christ; |
[5]For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit rejoicing, and beholding your order, and your steadfast faith in Christ. |
| [6]as, then, ye did receive Christ Jesus the Lord, in him walk ye, |
[6]As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, |
| [7]being rooted and built up in him, and confirmed in the faith, as ye were taught -- abounding in it in thanksgiving. |
[7]Rooted and built in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. |
| [8]See that no one shall be carrying you away as spoil through the philosophy and vain deceit, according to the deliverance of men, according to the rudiments of the world, and not according to Christ, |
[8]Beware lest there be any man that spoil you through philosophy, and vain deceit, through the traditions of men, according to the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. |
| [9]because in him doth tabernacle all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, |
[9]For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. |
| [10]and ye are in him made full, who is the head of all principality and authority, |
[10]And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and Power. |
| [11]in whom also ye were circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh in the circumcision of the Christ, |
[11]In whom also ye are circumcised with circumcision made without hands, by putting off the sinful body of the flesh, through the circumcision of Christ, |
| [12]being buried with him in the baptism, in which also ye rose with [him] through the faith of the working of God, who did raise him out of the dead. |
[12]In that ye are buried with him through baptism, in whom ye are also raised up together through the faith of the operation of God which raised him from the dead. |
| [13]And you -- being dead in the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh -- He made alive together with him, having forgiven you all the trespasses, |
[13]And ye which were dead in sins, and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, forgiving you all your trespasses. |
| [14]having blotted out the handwriting in the ordinances that is against us, that was contrary to us, and he hath taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross; |
[14]And putting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, he even took it out of the way, and fastened it upon the cross, |
| [15]having stripped the principalities and the authorities, he made a shew of them openly -- having triumphed over them in it. |
[15]And hath spoiled the Principalities, and Powers, and hath made a show of them openly, and hath triumphed over them in the same cross. |
| [16]Let no one, then, judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a feast, or of a new moon, or of sabbaths, |
[16]Let no man therefore condemn you in meat and drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days, |
| [17]which are a shadow of the coming things, and the body [is] of the Christ; |
[17]Which are but a shadow of things to come: but the body is in Christ. |
| [18]let no one beguile you of your prize, delighting in humble-mindedness and [in] worship of the messengers, intruding into the things he hath not seen, being vainly puffed up by the mind of his flesh, |
[18]Let no man at his pleasure bear rule over you by humbleness of mind, and worshipping of Angels, advancing himself in those things which he never saw, rashly puft up with his fleshly mind, |
| [19]and not holding the head, from which all the body -- through the joints and bands gathering supply, and being knit together -- may increase with the increase of God. |
[19]And holdeth not the head, whereof all the body furnished and knit together by joints and bands, increaseth with the increasing of God. |
| [20]If, then, ye did die with the Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances? |
[20]Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the ordinances of the world, why, as though ye lived in the world, are ye burdened with traditions? |
| [21]-- thou mayest not touch, nor taste, nor handle -- |
[21]As, Touch not, Taste not, Handle not. |
| [22]which are all for destruction with the using, after the commands and teachings of men, |
[22]Which all perish with the using, and are after the commandments and doctrines of men. |
| [23]which are, indeed, having a matter of wisdom in will-worship, and humble-mindedness, and neglecting of body -- not in any honour, unto a satisfying of the flesh. |
[23]Which things have indeed a show of wisdom, in voluntary religion and humbleness of mind, and in not sparing the body, neither have they it any estimation to satisfy the flesh. |
