[1]The wordsH1697 of the PreacherH6953, the sonH1121 of DavidH1732, kingH4428 in JerusalemH3389. |
[1]words of the Preacher, the son of David king in Jerusalem. |
[2]VanityH1892 of vanitiesH1892, saithH559[H8804] the PreacherH6953, vanityH1892 of vanitiesH1892; all is vanityH1892. |
[2]Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher: vanity of vanities, all is vanity. |
[3]What profitH3504 hath a manH120 of all his labourH5999 which he takethH5998[H8799] under the sunH8121? |
[3]What remaineth unto man in all his travail, which he suffereth under the sun? |
[4]One generationH1755 passeth awayH1980[H8802], and another generationH1755 comethH935[H8802][H8676][H935][H8804]: but the earthH776 abidethH5975[H8802] for everH5769. |
[4]One generation passeth, and another generation succeedeth: but the earth remaineth forever. |
[5]The sunH8121 also arisethH2224[H8804], and the sunH8121 goeth downH935[H8804], and hastethH7602[H8802] to his placeH4725 where he aroseH2224.[H8802] |
[5]The sun riseth, and the sun goeth down, and draweth to his place, where he riseth. |
[6]The windH7307 goethH1980[H8802] toward the southH1864, and turneth aboutH5437[H8802] unto the northH6828; it whirleth about continuallyH1980[H8802], and the windH7307 returneth againH7725[H8804] according to his circuitsH5439. |
[6]The wind goeth toward the south, and compasseth toward the north: the wind goeth round about, and returneth by his circuits. |
[7]All the riversH5158 runH1980[H8802] into the seaH3220; yet the seaH3220 is not fullH4392; unto the placeH4725 from whence the riversH5158 comeH1980[H8802], thither they returnH7725[H8802] againH3212.[H8800] |
[7]All the rivers go into the sea, yet the sea is not full: for the rivers go unto the place, whence they return, and go. |
[8]All thingsH1697 are full of labourH3023; manH376 cannotH3201[H8799] utterH1696[H8763] it: the eyeH5869 is not satisfiedH7646[H8799] with seeingH7200[H8800], nor the earH241 filledH4390[H8735] with hearingH8085.[H8800] |
[8]All things are full of labor: man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. |
[9]The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is doneH6213[H8738] is that which shall be doneH6213[H8735]: and there is no newH2319 thing under the sunH8121. |
[9]What is it that hath been? That that shall be: and what is it that hath been done? That which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. |
[10]Is thereH3426 any thingH1697 whereof it may be saidH559[H8799], SeeH7200[H8798], this is newH2319? it hath been alreadyH3528 of old timeH5769, which was before usH6440. |
[10]Is there anything, whereof one may say, Behold this, it is new? It hath been already in the old time that was before us. |
[11]There is no remembranceH2146 of formerH7223 things; neither shall there be any remembranceH2146 of things that are to comeH314 with those that shall come afterH314. |
[11]There is no memory of the former, neither shall there be a remembrance of the latter that shall be, with them that shall come after. |
[12]I the PreacherH6953 was kingH4428 over IsraelH3478 in JerusalemH3389. |
[12]I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem: |
[13]And I gaveH5414[H8804] my heartH3820 to seekH1875[H8800] and search outH8446[H8800] by wisdomH2451 concerning all things that are doneH6213[H8738] under heavenH8064: this soreH7451 travailH6045 hath GodH430 givenH5414[H8804] to the sonsH1121 of manH120 to be exercisedH6031 therewithH8800. |
[13]And I have given mine heart to search and find out wisdom by all things that are done under the heaven: (this sore travail hath God given to the sons of men, to humble them thereby) |
[14]I have seenH7200[H8804] all the worksH4639 that are doneH6213[H8738] under the sunH8121; and, behold, all is vanityH1892 and vexationH7469 of spiritH7307. |
[14]I have considered all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity, and vexation of the spirit. |
[15]That which is crookedH5791[H8794] cannotH3201[H8799] be made straightH8626[H8800]: and that which is wantingH2642 cannotH3201[H8799] be numberedH4487.[H8736] |
[15]That which is crooked, can none make straight: and that which faileth, cannot be numbered. |
[16]I communedH1696[H8765] with mine own heartH3820, sayingH559[H8800], Lo, I am come to great estateH1431[H8689], and have gottenH3254[H8689] more wisdomH2451 than all they that have been beforeH6440 me in JerusalemH3389: yea, my heartH3820 had greatH7235[H8687] experienceH7200[H8804] of wisdomH2451 and knowledgeH1847. |
[16]I thought in mine heart, and said, Behold, I am become great, and excel in wisdom all them that have been before me in Jerusalem: and mine heart hath seen much wisdom and knowledge. |
[17]And I gaveH5414[H8799] my heartH3820 to knowH3045[H8800] wisdomH2451, and to knowH3045[H8800] madnessH1947 and follyH5531: I perceivedH3045[H8804] that thisH1571 also is vexationH7475 of spiritH7307. |
[17]And I gave mine heart to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and foolishness: I knew also that this is a vexation of the spirit. |
[18]For in muchH7230 wisdomH2451 is muchH7230 griefH3708: and he that increasethH3254[H8686] knowledgeH1847 increasethH3254[H8686] sorrowH4341. |
[18]For in the multitude of wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow. |
