| [1]ואלה המשפטים אשר תשים לפניהם |
[1]NOW these are the judgments which you shall set before them. |
| [2]כי תקנה עבד עברי שש שנים יעבד ובשבעת־יצא לחפשי חנם |
[2]When you buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve you; and in the seventh year he shall go out free from your house without price. |
| [3]אם בגפו יבא בגפו יצא אם בעל אשה הוא ויצאה אשתו עמו |
[3]If he came in single, he shall go out single; if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. |
| [4]אם אדניו יתן לו אשה וילדה לו בנים או בנות־האשה וילדיה תהיה לאדניה והוא יצא בגפו |
[4]If his master has given him a wife and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be his master's and he shall go out alone. |
| [5]ואם אמר יאמר העבד אהבתי את אדני את אשתי ואת בני לא אצא חפשי |
[5]And if the servant shall say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free; |
| [6]והגישו אדניו אל האלהים והגישו אל הדלת או אל המזוזה ורצע אדניו את אזנו במרצע ועבדו לעלם |
[6]Then his master shall bring him to the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or to the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever. |
| [7]וכי ימכר איש את בתו לאמה־לא תצא כצאת העבדים |
[7]And when a man sells his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out free as the menservants do. |
| [8]אם רעה בעיני אדניה אשר לא [Q: לו] יעדה־והפדה לעם נכרי לא ימשל למכרה בבגדו בה |
[8]If her master hates her, so that he will not take her to himself as a wife, then he shall let her be redeemed; he shall have no authority to sell her to a foreign people, because he has dealt deceitfully with her. |
| [9]ואם לבנו ייעדנה־כמשפט הבנות יעשה לה |
[9]And if he takes her for wife to his son, then he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. |
| [10]אם אחרת יקח לו־שארה כסותה וענתה לא יגרע |
[10]If he takes to himself another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her clothes, and her conjugal rights. |
| [11]ואם שלש אלה־לא יעשה לה ויצאה חנם אין כסף |
[11]And if be does not these three things to her, then she shall go out free without price |
| [12]מכה איש ומת מות יומת |
[12]He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. |
| [13]ואשר לא צדה והאלהים אנה לידו־ושמתי לך מקום אשר ינוס שמה |
[13]But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. |
| [14]וכי יזד איש על רעהו להרגו בערמה־מעם מזבחי תקחנו למות |
[14]But if a man ventures to attack his neighbor and slay him treacherously, you shall take him even from my altar to put him to death. |
| [15]ומכה אביו ואמו מות יומת |
[15]He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. |
| [16]וגנב איש ומכרו ונמצא בידו מות יומת |
[16]He who steals a person and sells him, or he is found in his possession, he shall surely be put to death. |
| [17]ומקלל אביו ואמו מות יומת |
[17]He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. |
| [18]וכי יריבן אנשים־והכה איש את רעהו באבן או באגרף ולא ימות ונפל למשכב |
[18]And if two men quarrel, and one strikes another with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but is put to bed from the injury: |
| [19]אם יקום והתהלך בחוץ על משענתו־ונקה המכה רק שבתו יתן ורפא ירפא |
[19]If he rises again and walks in the street with his staff, then the one who struck him shall be acquitted, except that he shall pay for the loss of his time and the physician's fee. |
| [20]וכי יכה איש את עבדו או את אמתו בשבט ומת תחת ידו־נקם ינקם |
[20]And if a man strikes his servant, or his maid with a staff, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. |
| [21]אך אם יום או יומים יעמד־לא יקם כי כספו הוא |
[21]But if the victim is well after a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his property |
| [22]וכי ינצו אנשים ונגפו אשה הרה ויצאו ילדיה ולא יהיה אסון־ענוש יענש כאשר ישית עליו בעל האשה ונתן בפללים |
[22]If two men quarrel, and strike a woman with child so that she miscarries, and yet no mischief follow; he shall surely pay a fine such as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. |
| [23]ואם אסון יהיה־ונתתה נפש תחת נפש |
[23]But if any mischief follow, then you shall give life for life, |
| [24]עין תחת עין שן תחת שן יד תחת יד רגל תחת רגל |
[24]Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, |
| [25]כויה תחת כויה פצע תחת פצע חבורה תחת חבורה |
[25]Burning for burning, wound for wound, slap for slap. |
| [26]וכי יכה איש את עין עבדו או את עין אמתו־ושחתה לחפשי ישלחנו תחת עינו |
[26]land if a man strike the eye of his servant or the eye of his maid, and injure it, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. |
| [27]ואם שן עבדו או שן אמתו יפיל־לחפשי ישלחנו תחת שנו |
[27]And if he knocks out the tooth of his manservant or the tooth of his maidservant, he must let him go free for his tooth's sake. |
| [28]וכי יגח שור את איש או את אשה ומת־סקול יסקל השור ולא יאכל את בשרו ובעל השור נקי |
[28]If an ox gores a man or a woman that he or she die; then the ox shall be surely stoned and its meat shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be blameless. |
| [29]ואם שור נגח הוא מתמל שלשם והועד בבעליו ולא ישמרנו והמית איש או אשה־השור יסקל וגם בעליו יומת |
[29]But if the ox were known to be in the habit of goring in the past, and its owner has been warned, and he has not kept it in, and it kills a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death. |
| [30]אם כפר יושת עליו־ונתן פדין נפשו ככל אשר יושת עליו |
[30]But if a sum of money is imposed on him, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatever they ask from him. |
| [31]או בן יגח או בת יגח־כמשפט הזה יעשה לו |
[31]Whether the ox has gored a son or a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him. |
| [32]אם עבד יגח השור או אמה־כסף שלשים שקלים יתן לאדניו והשור יסקל |
[32]If the ox gores a manservant or a maidservant, the owner shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver and the ox shall be stoned. |
| [33]וכי יפתח איש בור או כי יכרה איש בר־ולא יכסנו ונפל שמה שור או חמור |
[33]And if a man shall open a wheat pit or a man shall dig a well, and not cover them, and an ox or an ass fall into it; |
| [34]בעל הבור ישלם כסף ישיב לבעליו והמת יהיה לו |
[34]The owner of the pit shall pay money to the owner of the animal, and the dead animal shall be his. |
| [35]וכי יגף שור איש את שור רעהו ומת־ומכרו את השור החי וחצו את כספו וגם את המת יחצון |
[35]And if one man's ox gores another man's ox so that it dies; then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money; and the dead ox also they shall divide. |
| [36]או נודע כי שור נגח הוא מתמול שלשם ולא ישמרנו בעליו־שלם ישלם שור תחת השור והמת יהיה לו |
[36]But if it be known that the ox has been in the habit of goring, and his owner has not kept it in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead animal shall belong to him |
| [37]כי יגנב איש שור או שה וטבחו או מכרו־חמשה בקר ישלם תחת השור וארבע צאן תחת השה |
