[1]If a man steal an ox or a sheep, and kill it or sell it, he shall restore five oxen for the ox, and four sheep for the sheep. |
[1]Si quis furatus fuerit bovem aut ovem, et occiderit vel vendiderit: quinque boves pro uno bove restituet, et quatuor oves pro una ove. |
[2]If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, no blood shall be shed for him. |
[2]Si effringens fur domum sive suffodiens fuerit inventus, et accepto vulnere mortuus fuerit, percussor non erit reus sanguinis. |
[3]But if it be in the daylight, blood shall be shed for him: for he should make full restitution: if he had not wherewith, then should he be sold for his theft. |
[3]Quod si orto sole hoc fecerit, homicidium perpetravit, et ipse morietur. Si non habuerit quod pro furto reddat, ipse venundabitur. |
[4]If the theft be found with him, alive, (whether it be ox, ass, or sheep) he shall restore the double. |
[4]Si inventum fuerit apud eum quod furatus est, vivens: sive bos, sive asinus, sive ovis, duplum restituet. |
[5]If a man do hurt field, or vineyard, and put in his beast to feed in another man's field, he shall recompense of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard. |
[5]Si læserit quispiam agrum vel vineam, et dimiserit jumentum suum ut depascatur aliena: quidquid optimum habuerit in agro suo, vel in vinea, pro damni æstimatione restituet. |
[6]If fire break out, and catch in the thorns, and the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field be consumed, he that kindled the fire shall make full restitution. |
[6]Si egressus ignis invenerit spinas, et comprehenderit acervos frugum, sive stantes segetes in agris, reddet damnum qui ignem succenderit. |
[7]If a man deliver his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of his house, if the thief be found, he shall pay the double. |
[7]Si quis commendaverit amico pecuniam aut vas in custodiam, et ab eo, qui susceperat, furto ablata fuerint: si invenitur fur, duplum reddet: |
[8]If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges to swear, whether he hath put his hand unto his neighbor's good, or no. |
[8]si latet fur, dominus domus applicabitur ad deos, et jurabit quod non extenderit manum in rem proximi sui, |
[9]In all manner of trespass, whether it be for oxen, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges, and whom the judges condemn, he shall pay the double unto his neighbor. |
[9]ad perpetrandam fraudem, tam in bove quam in asino, et ove ac vestimento, et quidquid damnum inferre potest: ad deos utriusque causa perveniet, et si illi judicaverit, duplum restituet proximo suo. |
[10]If a man deliver unto his neighbor to keep ass, or ox, or sheep, or any beast, and it die, or be hurt, or taken away by enemies, and no man see it, |
[10]Si quis commendaverit proximo suo asinum, bovem, ovem, et omne jumentum ad custodiam, et mortuum fuerit, aut debilitatum, vel captum ab hostibus, nullusque hoc viderit: |
[11]An oath of the Lord shall be between them twain, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbor's good, and the owner of it shall take the oath, and he shall not make it good: |
[11]jusjurandum erit in medio, quod non extenderit manum ad rem proximi sui: suscipietque dominus juramentum, et ille reddere non cogetur. |
[12]But if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. |
[12]Quod si furto ablatum fuerit, restituet damnum domino; |
[13]If it be torn in pieces, he shall bring record , and shall not make that good, which is devoured. |
[13]si comestum a bestia, deferat ad eum quod occisum est, et non restituet. |
[14]And if a man borrow ought of his neighbor, and it be hurt, or else die, the owner thereof not being by, he shall surely make it good. |
[14]Qui a proximo suo quidquam horum mutuo postulaverit, et debilitatum aut mortuum fuerit domino non præsente, reddere compelletur. |
[15]If the owner thereof be by, he shall not make it good: for if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire. |
[15]Quod si impræsentiarum dominus fuerit, non restituet, maxime si conductum venerat pro mercede operis sui. |
[16]And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall endow her, and take her to his wife. |
[16]Si seduxerit quis virginem necdum desponsatam, dormieritque cum ea: dotabit eam, et habebit eam uxorem. |
[17]If her father refuse to give her to him, he shall pay money, according to the dowry of virgins. |
[17]Si pater virginis dare noluerit, reddet pecuniam juxta modum dotis, quam virgines accipere consueverunt. |
[18]Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. |
[18]Maleficos non patieris vivere. |
[19]Whosoever lieth with a beast, shall die the death. |
[19]Qui coierit cum jumento, morte moriatur. |
[20]He that offereth unto any gods, save unto the Lord only, shall be slain. |
[20]Qui immolat diis, occidetur, præterquam Domino soli. |
[21]Moreover, thou shalt not do injury to a stranger, neither oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. |
[21]Advenam non contristabis, neque affliges eum: advenæ enim et ipsi fuistis in terra Ægypti. |
[22]Ye shall not trouble any widow, nor fatherless child. |
[22]Viduæ et pupillo non nocebitis. |
[23]If thou vex or trouble such, and so he call and cry unto me, I will surely hear his cry. |
[23]Si læseritis eos, vociferabuntur ad me, et ego audiam clamorem eorum: |
[24]Then shall my wrath be kindled, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. |
[24]et indignabitur furor meus, percutiamque vos gladio, et erunt uxores vestræ viduæ, et filii vestri pupilli. |
[25]If thou lend money to my people, that is, to the poor with thee, thou shalt not be as an usurer unto him: ye shall not oppress him with usury. |
[25]Si pecuniam mutuam dederis populo meo pauperi qui habitat tecum, non urgebis eum quasi exactor, nec usuris opprimes. |
[26]If thou take thy neighbor's raiment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him before the sun go down: |
[26]Si pignus a proximo tuo acceperis vestimentum, ante solis occasum reddes ei. |
[27]For that is his covering only, and this is his garment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? Therefore when he crieth unto me, I will hear him: for I am merciful. |
[27]Ipsum enim est solum, quo operitur, indumentum carnis ejus, nec habet aliud in quo dormiat: si clamaverit ad me, exaudiam eum, quia misericors sum. |
[28]Thou shalt not rail upon the judges, neither speak evil of the ruler of thy people. |
[28]Diis non detrahes, et principi populi tui non maledices. |
[29]Thine abundance and thy liquor shalt thou not keep back. The firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give me. |
[29]Decimas tuas et primitias tuas non tardabis reddere: primogenitum filiorum tuorum dabis mihi. |
[30]Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam, and the eighth day thou shalt give it me. |
[30]De bobus quoque, et ovibus similiter facies: septem diebus sit cum matre sua, die octava reddes illum mihi. |
[31]Ye shall be an holy people unto me, neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field: ye shall cast it to the dog. |
[31]Viri sancti eritis mihi: carnem, quæ a bestiis fuerit prægustata, non comedetis, sed projicietis canibus. |
