[1]And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him; [1]Now Jacob went forth on his journey and the angels of God met him.
[2]and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This [is] the camp of God;' and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.' [2]And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host, and called the name of the same place Mahanaim.
[3]And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom, [3]Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, unto the land of Seir into the country of Edom:
[4]and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now; [4]To whom he gave commandment, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord Esau: thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have been a stranger with Laban, and tarried unto this time.
[5]and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.' [5]I have beeves also and asses, sheep, and menservants, and women servants, and have sent to show my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
[6]And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;' [6]So the messengers came again to Jacob, saying, We came unto thy brother Esau, and he also cometh against thee and four hundred men with him.
[7]and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who [are] with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps, [7]Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and was sore troubled, and divided the people that was with him, and the sheep, and the beeves, and the camels into two companies.
[8]and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.' [8]For he said, If Esau come to the one company and smite it, the other company shall escape.
[9]And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee: [9]Moreover Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac: Lord, which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good,
[10]I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant -- for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. [10]I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant: for with my staff came I over this Jordan, and now have I gotten two bands.
[11]`Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me -- mother beside sons; [11]I pray thee, Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother upon the children.
[12]and Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.' [12]For thou saidst; I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
[13]And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother: [13]And he tarried there the same night, and took of that which came to had, a present for Esau his brother:
[14]she-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty, [14]Two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams:
[15]suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten; [15]Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bullocks, twenty she asses and ten foals.
[16]and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.' [16]So he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves, and said unto his servants, Pass before me, and put a space between drove and drove.
[17]And he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose [art] thou? and whither goest thou? and whose [are] these before thee? [17]And he commanded the foremost, saying, If Esau my brother meet thee, and ask thee, saying, Whose servant art thou? And whither goest thou? And whose are these before thee?
[18]then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob's: it [is] a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also [is] behind us.' [18]Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's: it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and behold, he himself also is behind us.
[19]And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him, [19]So likewise commanded he the second and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, After this manner, ye shall speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
[20]and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob [is] behind us;' for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;' [20]And ye shall say moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob cometh after us (for he thought, I will appease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face: it may be that he will accept me.)
[21]and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp. [21]So went the present before him: but he tarried that night with the company.
[22]And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok; [22]And he rose up the same night, and took his two wives, and his two maids, and his eleven children, and went over the ford Jabbok.
[23]and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over. [23]And he took them, and sent them over the river, and sent over that he had.
[24]And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn; [24]When Jacob was left himself alone, there wrestled a man with him unto the breaking of the day.
[25]and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him; [25]And he saw that he could not prevail against him: therefore he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was loosed, as he wrestled with him.
[26]and he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:' and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.' [26]And he said, Let me go, for the morning appeareth. Who answered, I will not let thee go except thou bless me.
[27]And he saith unto him, `What [is] thy name?' and he saith, `Jacob.' [27]Then said he unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
[28]And he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.' [28]Then said he, Thy name shall be called Jacob no more, but Israel: because thou hast had power with God, thou shalt also prevail with men.
[29]And Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;' and he saith, `Why [is] this, thou askest for My name?' and He blesseth him there. [29]Then Jacob demanded, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore now dost thou ask my name? And he blessed him there
[30]And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;' [30]And Jacob called the name of the place, Peniel: for, said he, I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
[31]and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh; [31]And the sun rose up to him as he passed Peniel, and he halted upon his thigh.
[32]therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which [is] on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob's thigh, against the sinew which shrank. [32]Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew that shrank in the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the sinew that shrank in the hollow of Jacob's thigh.
