[1]Propterea abundantius oportet observare nos ea quæ audivimus, ne forte pereffluamus. [1]Wherefore we ought diligently to give heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
[2]Si enim qui per angelos dictus est sermo, factus est firmus, et omnis prævaricatio, et inobedientia accepit justam mercedis retributionem: [2]For if the word spoken by Angels was steadfast, and every transgression, and disobedience received a just recompense of reward,
[3]quomodo nos effugiemus si tantam neglexerimus salutem? quæ cum initium accepisset enarrari per Dominum ab eis, qui audierunt, in nos confirmata est, [3]How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first began to be preached by the Lord, and afterward was confirmed unto us by them that heard him,
[4]contestante Deo signis et portentis, et variis virtutibus, et Spiritus Sancti distributionibus secundum suam voluntatem. [4]God bearing witness thereto, both with signs and wonders, and with diverse miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
[5]Non enim angelis subjecit Deus orbem terræ futurum, de quo loquimur. [5]For he hath not put in subjection unto the Angels the world to come, whereof we speak.
[6]Testatus est autem in quodam loco quis, dicens: Quid est homo quod memor es ejus, aut filius hominis quoniam visitas eum? [6]But one in a certain place witnessed, saying, What is man, that thou shouldest be mindful of him? or the son of man that thou wouldest consider him?
[7]Minuisti eum paulo minus ab angelis: gloria et honore coronasti eum: et constituisti eum super opera manuum tuarum. [7]Thou madest him a little inferior to the Angels: thou crowned him with glory and honor, and hast set him above the works of thine hands.
[8]Omnia subjecisti sub pedibus ejus. In eo enim quod omnia ei subjecit, nihil dimisit non subjectum ei. Nunc autem necdum videmus omnia subjecta ei. [8]Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. And in that he hath put all things in subjection under him, he left nothing that should not be subject unto him. But we yet see not all things subdued unto him,
[9]Eum autem, qui modico quam angeli minoratus est, videmus Jesum propter passionem mortis, gloria et honore coronatum: ut, gratia Dei, pro omnibus gustaret mortem. [9]But we see Jesus crowned with glory and honor, which was made a little inferior to the Angels, through the suffering of death, that by God's grace he might taste death for all men.
[10]Decebat enim eum, propter quem omnia, et per quem omnia, qui multos filios in gloriam adduxerat, auctorem salutis eorum per passionem consummare. [10]For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, seeing that he brought many children unto glory, that he should consecrate the Prince of their salvation through afflictions.
[11]Qui enim sanctificat, et qui sanctificantur, ex uno omnes. Propter quam causam non confunditur fratres eos vocare, dicens: [11]For he that sanctifieth, and they which are sanctified, are all of one: wherefore he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
[12]Nuntiabo nomen tuum fratribus meis: in medio ecclesiæ laudabo te. [12]Saying, I will declare thy Name unto my brethren: in the midst of the Church will I sing praises to thee.
[13]Et iterum: Ego ero fidens in eum. Et iterum: Ecce ego, et pueri mei, quos dedit mihi Deus. [13]And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold, here am I, and the children which God hath given me.
[14]Quia ergo pueri communicaverunt carni, et sanguini, et ipse similiter participavit eisdem: ut per mortem destrueret eum qui habebat mortis imperium, id est, diabolum: [14]Forasmuch then as the children were partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part with them, that he might destroy through death, him that had the power of death, that is the devil,
[15]et liberaret eos qui timore mortis per totam vitam obnoxii erant servituti. [15]And that he might deliver all them, which for fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
[16]Nusquam enim angelos apprehendit, sed semen Abrahæ apprehendit. [16]For he in no sort took the Angels , but he took the seed of Abraham.
[17]Unde debuit per omnia fratribus similari, ut misericors fieret, et fidelis pontifex ad Deum, ut repropitiaret delicta populi. [17]Wherefore in all things it became him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be merciful, and a faithful high Priest in things concerning God, that he might make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
[18]In eo enim, in quo passus est ipse et tentatus, potens est et eis, qui tentantur, auxiliari. [18]For in that he suffered, and was tempted, he is able to sucker them that are tempted.
