[1]WoeH1945 to the rebelliousH5637[H8802] childrenH1121, saithH5002[H8803] the LORDH3068, that takeH6213[H8800] counselH6098, but not of me; and that coverH5258[H8800] with a coveringH4541, but not of my spiritH7307, that they may addH5595[H8800] sinH2403 to sinH2403: [1]Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me, and cover with a covering, but not by my spirit, that they may lay sin upon sin:
[2]That walkH1980[H8802] to go downH3381[H8800] into EgyptH4714, and have not askedH7592[H8804] at my mouthH6310; to strengthenH5810[H8800] themselves in the strengthH4581 of PharaohH6547, and to trustH2620[H8800] in the shadowH6738 of EgyptH4714! [2]Which walk forth to go down into Egypt (and have not asked at my mouth) to strengthen themselves with the strength of Pharaoh, and trust in the shadow of Egypt.
[3]Therefore shall the strengthH4581 of PharaohH6547 be your shameH1322, and the trustH2622 in the shadowH6738 of EgyptH4714 your confusionH3639. [3]But the strength of Pharaoh shall be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.
[4]For his princesH8269 were at ZoanH6814, and his ambassadorsH4397 cameH5060[H8686] to HanesH2609. [4]For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came unto Hanes.
[5]They were all ashamedH3001[H8689] of a peopleH5971 that could not profitH3276[H8686] them, nor be an helpH5828 nor profitH3276[H8687], but a shameH1322, and also a reproachH2781. [5]They shall be all ashamed of the people that cannot profit them, nor help nor do them good, but shall be a shame and also a reproach.
[6]The burdenH4853 of the beastsH929 of the southH5045: into the landH776 of troubleH6869 and anguishH6695, from whence come the youngH3833 and old lionH3918, the viperH660 and fieryH8314 flyingH5774[H8789] serpentH8314, they will carryH5375[H8799] their richesH2428 upon the shouldersH3802 of young assesH5895, and their treasuresH214 upon the bunchesH1707 of camelsH1581, to a peopleH5971 that shall not profitH3276 themH8686. [6]The burden of the beasts of the south, in a land of trouble and anguish, from whence shall come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent against them that shall bear their riches upon the shoulders of the colts, and their treasures upon the bunches of the camels, to a people that cannot profit.
[7]For the EgyptiansH4714 shall helpH5826[H8799] in vainH1892, and to no purposeH7385: therefore have I criedH7121[H8804] concerning thisH2063, TheirH1992 strengthH7293 is to sit stillH7674. [7]For the Egyptians are vanity, and they shall help in vain. Therefore have I cried unto her, Their strength is to sit still.
[8]Now goH935[H8798], writeH3789[H8798] it before them in a tableH3871, and noteH2710[H8798] it in a bookH5612, that it may be for the timeH3117 to comeH314 forH5704 everH5703 and everH5769: [8]Now go, and write it before them in a table, and note it in a book that it may be for the last day forever and ever:
[9]That this is a rebelliousH4805 peopleH5971, lyingH3586 childrenH1121, childrenH1121 that willH14[H8804] not hearH8085[H8800] the lawH8451 of the LORDH3068: [9]That it is a rebellious people, lying children, and children that would not hear the law of the Lord.
[10]Which sayH559[H8804] to the seersH7200[H8802], SeeH7200[H8799] not; and to the prophetsH2374, ProphesyH2372[H8799] not unto us right thingsH5229, speakH1696[H8761] unto us smooth thingsH2513, prophesyH2372[H8798] deceitsH4123: [10]Which say unto the seers, See not: and to the prophets, Prophecy not unto us right things: but speak flattering things unto us: prophecy errors.
[11]Get you outH5493[H8798] of the wayH1870, turn asideH5186[H8685] out of the pathH734, cause the Holy OneH6918 of IsraelH3478 to ceaseH7673[H8685] from before usH6440. [11]Depart out of the way: go aside out of the path: cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from us.
[12]Wherefore thus saithH559[H8804] the Holy OneH6918 of IsraelH3478, Because ye despiseH3988[H8800] this wordH1697, and trustH982[H8799] in oppressionH6233 and perversenessH3868[H8737], and stayH8172 thereonH8735: [12]Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because you have cast off this word, and trust in violence, and wickedness, and stay thereupon,
[13]Therefore this iniquityH5771 shall be to you as a breachH6556 ready to fallH5307[H8802], swelling outH1158[H8737] in a highH7682[H8737] wallH2346, whose breakingH7667 comethH935[H8799] suddenlyH6597 at an instantH6621. [13]Therefore this iniquity shall be unto you as a breach that falleth, or a swelling in an high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly in a moment.
[14]And he shall breakH7665[H8804] it as the breakingH7667 of the pottersH3335'H8802 vesselH5035 that is broken in piecesH3807[H8800]; he shall not spareH2550[H8799]: so that there shall not be foundH4672[H8735] in the burstingH4386 of it a sherdH2789 to takeH2846[H8800] fireH784 from the hearthH3344[H8803], or to takeH2834[H8800] waterH4325 withal out of the pitH1360. [14]And the breaking thereof is like the breaking of a potter's pot, which is broken without pity, and in the breaking thereof is not found a shard to take fire out of the hearth, or to take water out of the pit.
[15]For thus saithH559[H8804] the LordH136 GODH3069, the Holy OneH6918 of IsraelH3478; In returningH7729 and restH5183 shall ye be savedH3467[H8735]; in quietnessH8252[H8687] and in confidenceH985 shall be your strengthH1369: and ye wouldH14 notH8804. [15]For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In rest and quietness shall ye be saved: in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength, but ye would not.
[16]But ye saidH559[H8799], No; for we will fleeH5127[H8799] upon horsesH5483; therefore shall ye fleeH5127[H8799]: and, We will rideH7392[H8799] upon the swiftH7031; therefore shall they that pursueH7291[H8802] you be swiftH7043.[H8735] [16]For ye have said, No, but we will flee away upon horses. Therefore shall ye flee. We will ride upon the swiftest. Therefore shall your persecutors be swifter.
[17]OneH259 thousandH505 shall flee atH6440 the rebukeH1606 of oneH259; atH6440 the rebukeH1606 of fiveH2568 shall ye fleeH5127[H8799]: till ye be leftH3498[H8738] as a beaconH8650 upon the topH7218 of a mountainH2022, and as an ensignH5251 on an hillH1389. [17]A thousand as one shall flee at the rebuke of one: at the rebuke of five shall ye flee, till ye be left as a ship mast upon the top of a mountain, and as a beacon upon an hill.
[18]And therefore will the LORDH3068 waitH2442[H8762], that he may be graciousH2603[H8800] unto you, and therefore will he be exaltedH7311[H8799], that he may have mercyH7355[H8763] upon you: for the LORDH3068 is a GodH430 of judgmentH4941: blessedH835 are all they that waitH2442 for himH8802. [18]Yet therefore will the Lord wait, that he may have mercy upon you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have compassion upon you: for the Lord is the God of judgment. Blessed are all they that wait for him.
[19]For the peopleH5971 shall dwellH3427[H8799] in ZionH6726 at JerusalemH3389: thou shalt weepH1058[H8799] no moreH1058[H8800]: he will be veryH2603[H8800] graciousH2603[H8799] unto thee at the voiceH6963 of thy cryH2199[H8800]; when he shall hearH8085[H8800] it, he will answerH6030 theeH8804. [19]Surely a people shall dwell in Zion, and in Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will certainly have mercy upon thee at the voice of thy cry: when he heareth thee, he will answer thee.
[20]And though the LordH136 giveH5414[H8804] you the breadH3899 of adversityH6862, and the waterH4325 of afflictionH3906, yet shall not thy teachersH3384[H8688] be removed into a cornerH3670[H8735] any more, but thine eyesH5869 shall seeH7200[H8802] thy teachersH3384:[H8688] [20]And when the Lord hath given you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, thy rain shall be no more kept back, but thine eyes shall see thy rain.
[21]And thine earsH241 shall hearH8085[H8799] a wordH1697 behindH310 thee, sayingH559[H8800], This is the wayH1870, walk ye in itH3212[H8798], when ye turn to the right handH541[H8686], and when ye turn to the leftH8041.[H8686] [21]And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when thou turnest to the right hand, and when thou turnest to the left.
[22]Ye shall defileH2930[H8765] also the coveringH6826 of thy graven imagesH6456 of silverH3701, and the ornamentH642 of thy molten imagesH4541 of goldH2091: thou shalt cast them awayH2219[H8799] as a menstruous clothH1739; thou shalt sayH559[H8799] unto it, Get thee henceH3318.[H8798] [22]And ye shall pollute the covering of the images of silver, and the rich ornament of thine images of gold, and cast them away as a menstruous cloth, and thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.
[23]Then shall he giveH5414[H8804] the rainH4306 of thy seedH2233, that thou shalt sowH2232[H8799] the groundH127 withal; and breadH3899 of the increaseH8393 of the earthH127, and it shall be fatH1879 and plenteousH8082: in that dayH3117 shall thy cattleH4735 feedH7462[H8799] in largeH7337[H8737] pasturesH3733. [23]Then shall he give rain unto thy seed, when thou shalt sow the ground, and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and as oil: in that day shall thy cattle be fed in large pastures.
[24]The oxenH504 likewise and the young assesH5895 that earH5647[H8802] the groundH127 shall eatH398[H8799] cleanH2548 provenderH1098, which hath been winnowedH2219[H8802] with the shovelH7371 and with the fanH4214. [24]The oxen also and the young asses, that till the ground, shall eat clean provender, which is winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.
[25]And there shall be upon every highH1364 mountainH2022, and upon every highH5375[H8737] hillH1389, riversH6388 and streamsH2988 of watersH4325 in the dayH3117 of the greatH7227 slaughterH2027, when the towersH4026 fallH5307.[H8800] [25]And upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill shall there be rivers and streams of waters, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers shall fall.
[26]Moreover the lightH216 of the moonH3842 shall be as the lightH216 of the sunH2535, and the lightH216 of the sunH2535 shall be sevenfoldH7659, as the lightH216 of sevenH7651 daysH3117, in the dayH3117 that the LORDH3068 bindeth upH2280[H8800] the breachH7667 of his peopleH5971, and healethH7495[H8799] the strokeH4273 of their woundH4347. [26]Moreover, the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be seven fold, and like the light of seven days in the day that the Lord shall bind up the breach of his people, and heal the stroke of their wound.
[27]Behold, the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 comethH935[H8804] from farH4801, burningH1197[H8802] with his angerH639, and the burdenH4858 thereof is heavyH3514: his lipsH8193 are fullH4390[H8804] of indignationH2195, and his tongueH3956 as a devouringH398[H8802] fireH784: [27]Behold, the name of the Lord cometh from far, his face is burning, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is as a devouring fire.
[28]And his breathH7307, as an overflowingH7857[H8802] streamH5158, shall reach to the midstH2673[H8799] of the neckH6677, to siftH5130[H8687] the nationsH1471 with the sieveH5299 of vanityH7723: and there shall be a bridleH7448 in the jawsH3895 of the peopleH5971, causing them to errH8582.[H8688] [28]And his spirit is as a river that overfloweth up to the neck: it divideth asunder, to fan the nations with the fan of vanity, and there shall be a bridle to cause them to err in the jaws of the people.
[29]Ye shall have a songH7892, as in the nightH3915 when a holyH6942 solemnityH2282 is keptH6942[H8692]; and gladnessH8057 of heartH3824, as when one goethH1980[H8802] with a pipeH2485 to comeH935[H8800] into the mountainH2022 of the LORDH3068, to the mighty OneH6697 of IsraelH3478. [29]But there shall be a song unto you as in the night, when solemn feast is kept: and gladness of heart, as he that cometh with a pipe to go unto the mount of the Lord, to the mighty one of Israel.
[30]And the LORDH3068 shall cause his gloriousH1935 voiceH6963 to be heardH8085[H8689], and shall shewH7200[H8686] the lighting downH5183 of his armH2220, with the indignationH2197 of his angerH639, and with the flameH3851 of a devouringH398[H8802] fireH784, with scatteringH5311, and tempestH2230, and hailstonesH68.[H1259] [30]And the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall declare the lighting down of his arm with the anger of his countenance, and flame of a devouring fire, with scattering and tempest, and hailstones.
[31]For through the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068 shall the AssyrianH804 be beaten downH2865[H8735], which smoteH5221[H8686] with a rodH7626. [31]For with the voice of the Lord shall Asshur [Assyria] be destroyed, which smote with the rod.
[32]And in every placeH3605 where the groundedH4145 staffH4294 shall passH4569, which the LORDH3068 shall layH5117[H8686] upon him, it shall be with tabretsH8596 and harpsH3658: and in battlesH4421 of shakingH8573 will he fightH3898 with itH8738. [32]And in every place that the staff shall pass, it shall cleave fast, which the Lord shall lay upon him with tabrets and harps: and with battles, and lifting up of hands shall he fight against it.
[33]For TophetH8613 is ordainedH6186[H8803] of oldH865; yea, for the kingH4428 it is preparedH3559[H8717]; he hath made it deepH6009[H8689] and largeH7337[H8689]: the pileH4071 thereof is fireH784 and muchH7235[H8687] woodH6086; the breathH5397 of the LORDH3068, like a streamH5158 of brimstoneH1614, doth kindleH1197 itH8802. [33]For Tophet is prepared of old: it is even prepared for the king: he hath made it deep and large: the burning thereof is fire and much wood: the breath of the Lord, like a river of brimstone, doth kindle it.
