[1]Now it came to pass in the fourteenthH702[H6240] yearH8141 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, that SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 came upH5927[H8804] against all the defencedH1219[H8803] citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and tookH8610 themH8799. [1]Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria] came up against all the strong cities of Judah, and took them.
[2]And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 sentH7971[H8799] RabshakehH7262 from LachishH3923 to JerusalemH3389 unto kingH4428 HezekiahH2396 with a greatH3515 armyH2426. And he stoodH5975[H8799] by the conduitH8585 of the upperH5945 poolH1295 in the highwayH4546 of the fuller'sH3526[H8801] fieldH7704. [2]And the king of Asshur [Assyria] sent Rabshakeh from Lachish toward Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah, with a great host, and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the path of the fuller's field.
[3]Then came forthH3318[H8799] unto him EliakimH471, Hilkiah'sH2518 sonH1121, which was over the houseH1004, and ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608[H8802], and JoahH3098, Asaph'sH623 sonH1121, the recorderH2142.[H8688] [3]Then came forth unto him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chancellor, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.
[4]And RabshakehH7262 saidH559[H8799] unto them, SayH559[H8798] ye now to HezekiahH2396, Thus saithH559[H8804] the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, What confidenceH986 is this wherein thou trustestH982?[H8804] [4]And Rabshakeh said unto them, Tell you Hezekiah, I pray you, Thus saith the great king, the king of Asshur [Assyria], What confidence is this, wherein thou trustest?
[5]I sayH559[H8804], sayest thou, (but they are but vainH8193 wordsH1697) I have counselH6098 and strengthH1369 for warH4421: now on whom dost thou trustH982[H8804], that thou rebellestH4775 against meH8804? [5]I say, Surely I have eloquence, but counsel and strength are for the war: on whom then dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
[6]Lo, thou trustestH982[H8804] in the staffH4938 of this brokenH7533[H8803] reedH7070, on EgyptH4714; whereon if a manH376 leanH5564[H8735], it will goH935[H8804] into his handH3709, and pierceH5344[H8804] it: so is PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 to all that trustH982 in himH8802. [6]Lo, thou trustest in this broken staff of reed on Egypt, whereupon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt, unto all that trust in him.
[7]But if thou sayH559[H8799] to me, We trustH982[H8804] in the LORDH3068 our GodH430: is it not he, whose high placesH1116 and whose altarsH4196 HezekiahH2396 hath taken awayH5493[H8689], and saidH559[H8799] to JudahH3063 and to JerusalemH3389, Ye shall worshipH7812[H8691] beforeH6440 this altarH4196? [7]But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God. Is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah took down, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
[8]Now therefore give pledgesH6148[H8690], I pray thee, to my masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and I will giveH5414[H8799] thee two thousandH505 horsesH5483, if thou be ableH3201[H8799] on thy part to setH5414[H8800] ridersH7392 upon themH8802. [8]Now therefore give hostages to my lord the king of Asshur [Assyria], and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
[9]How then wilt thou turn awayH7725[H8686] the faceH6440 of oneH259 captainH6346 of the leastH6996 of my master'sH113 servantsH5650, and put thy trustH982[H8799] on EgyptH4714 for chariotsH7393 and for horsemenH6571? [9]For how canst thou despise any captain of the least of my lord's servants? And put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
[10]And am I now come upH5927[H8804] withoutH1107 the LORDH3068 against this landH776 to destroyH7843[H8687] it? the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8804] unto me, Go upH5927[H8798] against this landH776, and destroyH7843 itH8685. [10]And am I now come up without the Lord to this land to destroy it? The Lord said unto me, Go up against this land and destroy it.
[11]Then saidH559[H8799] EliakimH471 and ShebnaH7644 and JoahH3098 unto RabshakehH7262, SpeakH1696[H8761], I pray thee, unto thy servantsH5650 in the Syrian languageH762; for we understandH8085[H8802] it: and speakH1696[H8762] not to us in the Jews' languageH3066, in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971 that are on the wallH2346. [11]Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Aramite's [Syrian's] anguage, (for we understand it) and talk not with us in the Jew's tongue, in the audience of the people that are on the wall.
[12]But RabshakehH7262 saidH559[H8799], Hath my masterH113 sentH7971[H8804] me to thy masterH113 and to thee to speakH1696[H8763] these wordsH1697? hath he not sent me to the menH582 that sitH3427[H8802] upon the wallH2346, that they may eatH398[H8800] their own dungH2716[H8676][H6675], and drinkH8354[H8800] their own pissH4325[H7272][H8675] with youH7890? [12]Then said Rabshakeh, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee to speak these words, and not to the men that sit on the wall? That they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
[13]Then RabshakehH7262 stoodH5975[H8799], and criedH7121[H8799] with a loudH1419 voiceH6963 in the Jews' languageH3066, and saidH559[H8799], HearH8085[H8798] ye the wordsH1697 of the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. [13]So Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jew's language, and said, Hear the words of the great king, of the king of Asshur [Assyria].
[14]Thus saithH559[H8804] the kingH4428, Let not HezekiahH2396 deceiveH5377[H8686] you: for he shall not be ableH3201[H8799] to deliverH5337 youH8687. [14]Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
[15]Neither let HezekiahH2396 make you trustH982[H8686] in the LORDH3068, sayingH559[H8800], The LORDH3068 will surelyH5337[H8687] deliverH5337[H8686] us: this cityH5892 shall not be deliveredH5414[H8735] into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. [15]Neither let Hezekiah make you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us: this city shall not be given over into the hand of the king of Asshur [Assyria].
[16]HearkenH8085[H8799] not to HezekiahH2396: for thus saithH559[H8804] the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, MakeH6213[H8798] an agreement with me by a presentH1293, and come outH3318[H8798] to me: and eatH398[H8798] ye every oneH376 of his vineH1612, and every oneH376 of his fig treeH8384, and drinkH8354[H8798] ye every oneH376 the watersH4325 of his own cisternH953; [16]Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Asshur [Assyria], Make appointment with me, and come out to me, that every man may eat of his own vine, and every man of his own fig tree, and drink every man the water of his own well,
[17]Until I comeH935[H8800] and take you awayH3947[H8804] to a landH776 like your own landH776, a landH776 of cornH1715 and wineH8492, a landH776 of breadH3899 and vineyardsH3754. [17]Till I come and bring you to a land like your own land, even a land of wheat, and wine, a land of bread and vineyards,
[18]Beware lest HezekiahH2396 persuadeH5496[H8686] you, sayingH559[H8800], The LORDH3068 will deliverH5337[H8686] us. Hath anyH376 of the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 deliveredH5337[H8689] his landH776 out of the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804? [18]Lest Hezekiah deceive you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur [Assyria]?
[19]Where are the godsH430 of HamathH2574 and ArphadH774? where are the godsH430 of SepharvaimH5617? and have they deliveredH5337[H8689] SamariaH8111 out of my handH3027? [19]Where is the god of Hamath, and of Arpad? Where is the god of Sepharvaim? Or how have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?
[20]Who are they among all the godsH430 of these landsH776, that have deliveredH5337[H8689] their landH776 out of my handH3027, that the LORDH3068 should deliverH5337[H8686] JerusalemH3389 out of my handH3027? [20]Who is he among all the gods of these lands, that hath delivered their country out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
[21]But they held their peaceH2790[H8686], and answeredH6030[H8804] him not a wordH1697: for the king'sH4428 commandmentH4687 was, sayingH559[H8800], AnswerH6030 him notH8799. [21]Then they kept silence, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
[22]Then cameH935[H8799] EliakimH471, the sonH1121 of HilkiahH2518, that was over the householdH1004, and ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608[H8802], and JoahH3098, the sonH1121 of AsaphH623, the recorderH2142[H8688], to HezekiahH2396 with their clothesH899 rentH7167[H8803], and toldH5046[H8686] him the wordsH1697 of RabshakehH7262. [22]Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chancellor, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, unto Hezekiah with rent clothes, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
