[1]Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh. |
| [2]And the chiefH6438 of all the peopleH5971, even of all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, presentedH3320[H8691] themselves in the assemblyH6951 of the peopleH5971 of GodH430, fourH702 hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmenH376[H7273] that drewH8025[H8802] swordH2719. |
[2]And the chief of all the people, and all the tribes of Israel assembled in the congregation of the people of God four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword. |
| [3](Now the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 heardH8085[H8799] that the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 were gone upH5927[H8804] to MizpehH4709.) Then saidH559[H8799] the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, TellH1696[H8761] us, how wasH1961[H8738] this wickednessH7451? |
[3](Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh) Then the children of Israel said, How is this wickedness committed? |
| [4]And the LeviteH3881[H376], the husbandH376 of the womanH802 that was slainH7523[H8737], answeredH6030[H8799] and saidH559[H8799], I cameH935[H8804] into GibeahH1390 that belongeth to BenjaminH1144, I and my concubineH6370, to lodgeH3885.[H8800] |
[4]And the same Levite, the woman's husband that was slain, answered and said, I came unto Gibeah that is in Benjamin with my concubine to lodge, |
| [5]And the menH1167 of GibeahH1390 roseH6965[H8799] against me, and besetH5437 the houseH1004 round aboutH5437[H8799] upon me by nightH3915, and thoughtH1819[H8765] to have slainH2026[H8800] me: and my concubineH6370 have they forcedH6031[H8765], that she is deadH4191.[H8799] |
[5]And the men of Gibeah arose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, thinking to have slain me, and have forced my concubine that she is dead. |
| [6]And I tookH270[H8799] my concubineH6370, and cut her in piecesH5408[H8762], and sentH7971[H8762] her throughout all the countryH7704 of the inheritanceH5159 of IsraelH3478: for they have committedH6213[H8804] lewdnessH2154 and follyH5039 in IsraelH3478. |
[6]Then I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed abomination and villainy in Israel. |
| [7]Behold, ye are all childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478; giveH3051[H8798] hereH1988 your adviceH1697 and counselH6098. |
[7]Behold, ye are all children of Israel: give your advice, and counsel herein. |
| [8]And all the peopleH5971 aroseH6965[H8799] as oneH259 manH376, sayingH559[H8800], We will not anyH376 of us goH3212[H8799] to his tentH168, neither will we anyH376 of us turnH5493[H8799] into his houseH1004. |
[8]Then all the people arose as one man, saying, There shall not a man of us go to his tent, neither any turn into his house. |
| [9]But now this shall be the thingH1697 which we will doH6213[H8799] to GibeahH1390; we will go up by lot against itH1486; |
[9]But now this is that thing which we will do to Gibeah: we will go up by lot against it, |
| [10]And we will takeH3947[H8804] tenH6235 menH582 of an hundredH3967 throughout all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, and an hundredH3967 of a thousandH505, and a thousandH505 out of ten thousandH7233, to fetchH3947[H8800] victualH6720 for the peopleH5971, that they may doH6213[H8800], when they comeH935[H8800] to GibeahH1387 of BenjaminH1144, according to all the follyH5039 that they have wroughtH6213[H8804] in IsraelH3478. |
[10]And we will take ten men of the hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of the thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand to bring victual for the people that they may do (when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin) according to all the villainy, that it hath done in Israel. |
| [11]So all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were gatheredH622[H8735] against the cityH5892, knit togetherH2270 as oneH259 manH376. |
[11]So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together, as one man. |
| [12]And the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 sentH7971[H8799] menH582 through all the tribeH7626 of BenjaminH1144, sayingH559[H8800], What wickednessH7451 is this that is doneH1961 among youH8738? |
[12]And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is committed among you? |
| [13]Now therefore deliverH5414[H8798] us the menH582, the childrenH1121 of BelialH1100, which are in GibeahH1390, that we may put them to deathH4191[H8686], and put awayH1197[H8762] evilH7451 from IsraelH3478. But the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 wouldH14[H8804] not hearkenH8085[H8800] to the voiceH6963 of their brethrenH251 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: |
[13]Now therefore deliver us those wicked men which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel: but the children of Benjamin would not obey the voice of their brethren the children of Israel. |
| [14]But the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 gathered themselves togetherH622[H8735] out of the citiesH5892 unto GibeahH1390, to go outH3318[H8800] to battleH4421 against the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. |
[14]But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to come out and fight against the children of Israel. |
| [15]And the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 were numberedH6485[H8691] at that timeH3117 out of the citiesH5892 twentyH6242 and sixH8337 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025[H8802] swordH2719, beside the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of GibeahH1390, which were numberedH6485[H8694] sevenH7651 hundredH3967 chosenH977[H8803] menH376. |
[15]And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities six and twenty thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. |
| [16]Among all this peopleH5971 there were sevenH7651 hundredH3967 chosenH977[H8803] menH376 lefthandedH334[H3027][H3225]; every one could slingH7049[H8802] stonesH68 at an hairH8185 breadth, and not missH2398.[H8686] |
[16]Of all this people were seven hundred chosen men, being left handed: all these could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not fail. |
| [17]And the menH376 of IsraelH3478, beside BenjaminH1144, were numberedH6485[H8694] fourH702 hundredH3967 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025[H8802] swordH2719: all these were menH376 of warH4421. |
[17]Also the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword, even all men of war. |
| [18]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 aroseH6965[H8799], and went upH5927[H8799] to the houseH1004 of GodH430[H8677][H1008], and askedH7592[H8799] counsel of GodH430, and saidH559[H8799], WhichH4310 of us shall go upH5927[H8799] firstH8462 to the battleH4421 against the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144? And the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8799], JudahH3063 shall go up firstH8462. |
[18]And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked of God, saying, Which of us shall go up first to fight against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall be first. |
| [19]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 rose upH6965[H8799] in the morningH1242, and encampedH2583[H8799] against GibeahH1390. |
[19]Then the children of Israel arose up early and camped against Gibeah. |
| [20]And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 went outH3318[H8799] to battleH4421 against BenjaminH1144; and the menH376 of IsraelH3478 put themselves in arrayH6186[H8799] to fightH4421 against them at GibeahH1390. |
[20]And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against the beside Gibeah. |
| [21]And the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 came forthH3318[H8799] out of GibeahH1390, and destroyed downH7843[H8686] to the groundH776 of the IsraelitesH3478 that dayH3117 twentyH6242 and twoH8147 thousandH505 menH376. |
[21]And the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and slew down to the ground of the Israelites that day two and twenty thousand men. |
| [22]And the peopleH5971 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 encouragedH2388[H8691] themselves, and set their battleH4421 againH3254[H8686] in arrayH6186[H8800] in the placeH4725 where they put themselves in arrayH6186[H8804] the firstH7223 dayH3117. |
[22]And the people, the men of Israel plucked up their hearts, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put them in array the first day. |
| [23](And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 went upH5927[H8799] and weptH1058[H8799] beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 until evenH6153, and askedH7592[H8799] counsel of the LORDH3068, sayingH559[H8800], Shall I go upH5066[H8800] againH3254[H8686] to battleH4421 against the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 my brotherH251? And the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8799], Go upH5927 against himH8798.) |
[23](For the children of Israel had gone up and wept before the Lord unto the evening, and had asked of the Lord, saying, Shall I go again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brethren? And the Lord said, Go up against them) |
| [24]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 came nearH7126[H8799] against the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 the secondH8145 dayH3117. |
[24]Then the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day. |
| [25]And BenjaminH1144 went forthH3318[H8799] againstH7125[H8800] them out of GibeahH1390 the secondH8145 dayH3117, and destroyed downH7843[H8686] to the groundH776 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 again eighteenH8083[H6240] thousandH505 menH376; all these drewH8025[H8802] the swordH2719. |
[25]Also the second day Benjamin came forth to meet them out of Gibeah, and slew down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men: all they could handle the sword. |
| [26]Then all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, and all the peopleH5971, went upH5927[H8799], and cameH935[H8799] unto the houseH1004 of GodH430[H8677][H1008], and weptH1058[H8799], and satH3427[H8799] there beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and fastedH6684[H8799] that dayH3117 until evenH6153, and offeredH5927[H8686] burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offeringsH8002 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. |
[26]Then all the children of Israel went up and all the people came also unto the house of God, and wept and sat there before the Lord and fasted that day unto the evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. |
| [27]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 enquiredH7592[H8799] of the LORDH3068, (for the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of GodH430 was there in those daysH3117, |
[27]And the children of Israel asked the Lord (for there was the ark of the covenant of God in those days, |
| [28]And PhinehasH6372, the sonH1121 of EleazarH499, the sonH1121 of AaronH175, stoodH5975[H8802] beforeH6440 it in those daysH3117,) sayingH559[H8800], Shall I yet againH3254[H8686] go outH3318[H8800] to battleH4421 against the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 my brotherH251, or shall I ceaseH2308[H8799]? And the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8799], Go upH5927[H8798]; for to morrowH4279 I will deliverH5414[H8799] them into thine handH3027. |
[28]And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron stood before it at that time) saying, Shall I yet go any more to battle against the children of Benjamin my brethren, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up: for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand. |
| [29]And IsraelH3478 setH7760[H8799] liers in waitH693[H8802] round aboutH5439 GibeahH1390. |
[29]And Israel set men to lie in wait round about Gibeah. |
| [30]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 went upH5927[H8799] against the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, and put themselves in arrayH6186[H8799] against GibeahH1390, as at other timesH6471. |
[30]And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times. |
| [31]And the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 went outH3318[H8799] againstH7125[H8800] the peopleH5971, and were drawn awayH5423[H8717] from the cityH5892; and they beganH2490[H8686] to smiteH5221[H8687] of the peopleH5971, and killH2491, as at other timesH6471, in the highwaysH4546, of which oneH259 goeth upH5927[H8802] to the houseH1004 of GodH430[H8677][H1008], and the otherH259 to GibeahH1390 in the fieldH7704, about thirtyH7970 menH376 of IsraelH3478. |
[31]Then the children of Benjamin coming out against the people, were drawn from the city: and they began to smite of the people and kill as at other times, even by the ways in the field (whereof one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah) upon a thirty men of Israel. |
| [32]And the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 saidH559[H8799], They are smitten downH5062[H8737] beforeH6440 us, as at the firstH7223. But the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8804], Let us fleeH5127[H8799], and drawH5423[H8804] them from the cityH5892 unto the highwaysH4546. |
[32](For the children of Benjamin said, They are fallen before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee and pluck them away from the city unto the highways) |
| [33]And all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 rose upH6965[H8804] out of their placeH4725, and put themselves in arrayH6186[H8799] at BaaltamarH1193: and the liers in waitH693[H8802] of IsraelH3478 came forthH1518[H8688] out of their placesH4725, even out of the meadowsH4629 of GibeahH1387. |
[33]And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the men that lay in wait of the Israelites came forth of their place, even out of the meadows of Gibeah, |
| [34]And there cameH935[H8799] againstH5048 GibeahH1390 tenH6235 thousandH505 chosenH977[H8803] menH376 out of all IsraelH3478, and the battleH4421 was soreH3513[H8804]: but they knewH3045[H8804] not that evilH7451 was nearH5060 themH8802. |
[34]And they came over against Gibeah, ten thousand chosen men of all Israel, and the battle was sore: for they knew not that the evil was near them. |
| [35]And the LORDH3068 smoteH5062[H8799] BenjaminH1144 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478: and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 destroyedH7843[H8686] of the BenjamitesH1145 that dayH3117 twentyH6242 and fiveH2568 thousandH505 and an hundredH3967 menH376: all these drewH8025[H8802] the swordH2719. |
[35]And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel, and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites the same day five and twenty thousand and an hundred men: all they could handle the sword. |
| [36]So the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144 sawH7200[H8799] that they were smittenH5062[H8738]: for the menH376 of IsraelH3478 gaveH5414[H8799] placeH4725 to the BenjamitesH1145, because they trustedH982[H8804] unto the liers in waitH693[H8802] which they had setH7760[H8804] beside GibeahH1390. |
[36]So the children of Benjamin saw that they were stricken down: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted to the men that lay in wait, which they had laid beside Gibeah. |
| [37]And the liers in waitH693[H8802] hastedH2363[H8689], and rushedH6584[H8799] upon GibeahH1390; and the liers in waitH693[H8802] drew themselves alongH4900[H8799], and smoteH5221[H8686] all the cityH5892 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719. |
[37]And they that lay in wait hasted, and break forth toward Gibeah, and the ambushment drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword. |
| [38]Now there was an appointed signH4150 between the menH376 of IsraelH3478 andH5973 the liers in waitH693[H8802], that they should make a greatH7235[H8685] flameH4864 with smokeH6227 rise upH5927[H8687] out of the cityH5892. |
[38]Also the men of Israel had appointed a certain time with the ambushments, that they should make a great flame and smoke rise up out of the city. |
| [39]And when the menH376 of IsraelH3478 retiredH2015[H8799] in the battleH4421, BenjaminH1144 beganH2490[H8689] to smiteH5221[H8687] and killH2491 of the menH376 of IsraelH3478 about thirtyH7970 personsH376: for they saidH559[H8804], SurelyH5062[H8736] they are smitten downH5062[H8737] beforeH6440 us, as in the firstH7223 battleH4421. |
[39]And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are stricken down before us, as in the first battle. |
| [40]But when the flameH4864 beganH2490[H8689] to arise upH5927[H8800] out of the cityH5892 with a pillarH5982 of smokeH6227, the BenjamitesH1145 lookedH6437[H8799] behindH310 them, and, behold, the flameH3632 of the cityH5892 ascended upH5927[H8804] to heavenH8064. |
[40]But when the flame began to arise out of the city , as a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked back, and behold, the flame of the city began to ascend up to heaven. |
| [41]And when the menH376 of IsraelH3478 turned againH2015[H8804], the menH376 of BenjaminH1144 were amazedH926[H8735]: for they sawH7200[H8804] that evilH7451 was comeH5060 upon themH8804. |
[41]Then the men of Israel turned again, and the men of Benjamin were astonied: for they saw that evil was near unto them. |
| [42]Therefore they turnedH6437[H8799] their backs beforeH6440 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 unto the wayH1870 of the wildernessH4057; but the battleH4421 overtookH1692[H8689] them; and them which came out of the citiesH5892 they destroyedH7843[H8688] in the midst of themH8432. |
[42]Therefore they fled before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them: also they which came out of the cities, slew them among them. |
| [43]Thus they inclosedH3803[H8765] the BenjamitesH1145 round aboutH3803[H8765], and chasedH7291[H8689] them, and trode them downH1869[H8689] with easeH4496 over againstH5227 GibeahH1390 toward the sunrisingH4217.[H8121] |
[43]Thus they compassed the Benjamites about , and chased them at ease, and overran them, even over against Gibeah on the east side. |
| [44]And there fellH5307[H8799] of BenjaminH1144 eighteenH8083[H6240] thousandH505 menH376; all these were menH582 of valourH2428. |
[44]And there were slain of Benjamin eighteen thousand men, which were all men of war. |
| [45]And they turnedH6437[H8799] and fledH5127[H8799] toward the wildernessH4057 unto the rockH5553 of RimmonH7417: and they gleanedH5953[H8779] of them in the highwaysH4546 fiveH2568 thousandH505 menH376; and pursuedH1692[H8686] hard afterH310 them unto GidomH1440, and slewH5221[H8686] two thousandH505 men of themH376. |
[45]And they turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and the Israelites gleaned of them by the way five thousand men, and pursued after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them, |
| [46]So that all which fellH5307[H8802] that dayH3117 of BenjaminH1144 were twentyH6242 and fiveH2568 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025[H8802] the swordH2719; all these were menH582 of valourH2428. |
[46]So that all that were slain that day of Benjamin, were five and twenty thousand men that drew sword, which were all men of war: |
| [47]But sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376 turnedH6437[H8799] and fledH5127[H8799] to the wildernessH4057 unto the rockH5553 RimmonH7417, and abodeH3427[H8799] in the rockH5553 RimmonH7417 fourH702 monthsH2320. |
[47]But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon, and abode in the rock of Rimmon four months. |
| [48]And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 turned againH7725[H8804] upon the childrenH1121 of BenjaminH1144, and smoteH5221[H8686] them with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, as well the menH4974 of every cityH5892, asH5704 the beastH929, and all that came to handH4672[H8737]: also they setH7971[H8765] on fireH784 all the citiesH5892 that they came toH4672.[H8737] |
[48]Then the men of Israel returned unto the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword from the men of the city unto the beasts, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they could come by. |
