[1]And the menH376 of EphraimH669 saidH559[H8799] unto him, Why hast thouH4100 servedH6213[H8804] us thusH1697, that thou calledstH7121[H8800] us not, when thou wentestH1980[H8804] to fightH3898[H8736] with the MidianitesH4080? And they did chideH7378[H8799] with him sharplyH2394. [1]Then the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus that thou callest us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they chide with him sharply.
[2]And he saidH559[H8799] unto them, What have I doneH6213[H8804] now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaningH5955 of the grapes of EphraimH669 betterH2896 than the vintageH1210 of AbiezerH44? [2]To whom he said, What have I now done in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of grapes of Ephraim better, than the vintage of Abiezer?
[3]GodH430 hath deliveredH5414[H8804] into your handsH3027 the princesH8269 of MidianH4080, OrebH6159 and ZeebH2062: and what was I ableH3201[H8804] to doH6213[H8800] in comparison of you? Then their angerH7307 was abatedH7503[H8804] toward him, when he had saidH1697 thatH1696.[H8763] [3]God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? And when he had thus spoken, then their spirits abated toward him.
[4]And GideonH1439 cameH935[H8799] to JordanH3383, and passed overH5674[H8802], he, and the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 that were with him, faintH5889, yet pursuingH7291 themH8802. [4]And Gideon came to Jordan to pass over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, weary, yet pursuing them.
[5]And he saidH559[H8799] unto the menH582 of SuccothH5523, GiveH5414[H8798], I pray you, loavesH3603 of breadH3899 unto the peopleH5971 that followH7272 me; for they be faintH5889, and I am pursuingH7291[H8802] afterH310 ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, kingsH4428 of MidianH4080. [5]And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, morsels of bread unto the people that follow me ( for they be weary) that I may follow after Zebah, and Zalmunna kings of Midian.
[6]And the princesH8269 of SuccothH5523 saidH559[H8799], Are the handsH3709 of ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 now in thine handH3027, that we should giveH5414[H8799] breadH3899 unto thine armyH6635? [6]And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hands, that we should give bread unto thine army?
[7]And GideonH1439 saidH559[H8799], Therefore when the LORDH3068 hath deliveredH5414[H8800] ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 into mine handH3027, then I will tearH1758[H8804] your fleshH1320 with the thornsH6975 of the wildernessH4057 and with briersH1303. [7]Gideon then said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, I will tear your flesh with thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
[8]And he went upH5927[H8799] thence to PenuelH6439, and spakeH1696[H8762] unto them likewiseH2063: and the menH582 of PenuelH6439 answeredH6030[H8799] him as the menH582 of SuccothH5523 had answeredH6030 himH8804. [8]And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise, and the men of Penuel answered him, as the men of Succoth answered.
[9]And he spakeH559[H8799] also unto the menH582 of PenuelH6439, sayingH559[H8800], When I come againH7725[H8800] in peaceH7965, I will break downH5422[H8799] this towerH4026. [9]And he said also unto the men of Penuel, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
[10]Now ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 were in KarkorH7174, and their hostsH4264 with them, about fifteenH2568[H6240] thousandH505 men, all that were leftH3498[H8737] of all the hostsH4264 of the childrenH1121 of the eastH6924: for there fellH5307[H8802] an hundredH3967 and twentyH6242 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025[H8802] swordH2719. [10]Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand, all that were left of all the hosts of them of the east: for there was slain an hundred and twenty thousand men, that drew swords.
[11]And GideonH1439 went upH5927[H8799] by the wayH1870 of them that dweltH7931[H8803] in tentsH168 on the eastH6924 of NobahH5025 and JogbehahH3011, and smoteH5221[H8686] the hostH4264: for the hostH4264 was secureH983. [11]And Gideon went through them that dwelt in tabernacles on the east side of Nobah and Iogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was careless.
[12]And when ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 fledH5127[H8799], he pursuedH7291[H8799] afterH310 them, and tookH3920[H8799] the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of MidianH4080, ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, and discomfitedH2729[H8689] all the hostH4264. [12]And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he followed after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
[13]And GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 returnedH7725[H8799] from battleH4421 beforeH4608 the sun was upH2775, [13]So Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle, the sun being yet high,
[14]And caughtH3920[H8799] a young manH5288 of the menH582 of SuccothH5523, and enquiredH7592[H8799] of him: and he describedH3789[H8799] unto him the princesH8269 of SuccothH5523, and the eldersH2205 thereof, even threescore and seventeenH7657[H7651] menH376. [14]And took a servant of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he wrote to him the princes of Succoth and the elders thereof, even seventy and seven men.
[15]And he cameH935[H8799] unto the menH582 of SuccothH5523, and saidH559[H8799], Behold ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, with whom ye did upbraidH2778[H8765] me, sayingH559[H8800], Are the handsH3709 of ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 now in thine handH3027, that we should giveH5414[H8799] breadH3899 unto thy menH582 that are wearyH3287? [15]And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, by whom ye upbraided me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in thine hands, that we should give bread unto thy weary men?
[16]And he tookH3947[H8799] the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892, and thornsH6975 of the wildernessH4057 and briersH1303, and with them he taughtH3045[H8686] the menH582 of SuccothH5523. [16]Then he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and did tear the men of Succoth with them.
[17]And he beat downH5422[H8804] the towerH4026 of PenuelH6439, and slewH2026[H8799] the menH582 of the cityH5892. [17]Also he break down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
[18]Then saidH559[H8799] he unto ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, WhatH375 manner of menH582 were they whom ye slewH2026[H8804] at TaborH8396? And they answeredH559[H8799], As thouH3644 art, so were they; each oneH259 resembledH8389 the childrenH1121 of a kingH4428. [18]Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they, whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they: every one was like the children of a king.
[19]And he saidH559[H8799], They were my brethrenH251, even the sonsH1121 of my motherH517: as the LORDH3068 livethH2416, ifH3863 ye had saved them aliveH2421[H8689], I would not slayH2026 youH8804. [19]And he said, They were my brethren, even my mother's children: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved their lives, I would not slay you.
[20]And he saidH559[H8799] unto JetherH3500 his firstbornH1060, UpH6965[H8798], and slayH2026[H8798] them. But the youthH5288 drewH8025[H8804] not his swordH2719: for he fearedH3372[H8804], because he was yet a youthH5288. [20]Then he said unto Jether his firstborn son, Up, and slay them: but the boy drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet young.
[21]Then ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 saidH559[H8799], RiseH6965[H8798] thou, and fallH6293[H8798] upon us: for as the manH376 is, so is his strengthH1369. And GideonH1439 aroseH6965[H8799], and slewH2026[H8799] ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, and took awayH3947[H8799] the ornamentsH7720 that were on their camels'H1581 necksH6677. [21]Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments, that were on their camels' necks.
[22]Then the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559[H8799] unto GideonH1439, RuleH4910[H8798] thou over us, both thou, and thy sonH1121, and thy son'sH1121 sonH1121 also: for thou hast deliveredH3467[H8689] us from the handH3027 of MidianH4080. [22]Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Reign thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son: for thou hast delivered us out of the hand of Midian.
[23]And GideonH1439 saidH559[H8799] unto them, I will not ruleH4910[H8799] over you, neither shall my sonH1121 ruleH4910[H8799] over you: the LORDH3068 shall ruleH4910 over youH8799. [23]And Gideon said unto them, I will not reign over you, neither shall my child reign over you , but the Lord shall reign over you.
[24]And GideonH1439 saidH559[H8799] unto them, I would desireH7592[H8799] a requestH7596 of you, that ye would giveH5414[H8798] me every manH376 the earringsH5141 of his preyH7998. (For they had goldenH2091 earringsH5141, because they were IshmaelitesH3459.) [24]Again Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that you would give me every man the earrings of his prey (for they had golden earrings because they were Ismaelites)
[25]And they answeredH559[H8799], We will willinglyH5414[H8800] giveH5414[H8799] them. And they spreadH6566[H8799] a garmentH8071, and did castH7993[H8686] therein every manH376 the earringsH5141 of his preyH7998. [25]And they answered, We will give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
[26]And the weightH4948 of the goldenH2091 earringsH5141 that he requestedH7592[H8804] was a thousandH505 and sevenH7651 hundredH3967 shekels of goldH2091; beside ornamentsH7720, and collarsH5188, and purpleH713 raimentH899 that was on the kingsH4428 of MidianH4080, and beside the chainsH6060 that were about their camels'H1581 necksH6677. [26]And the weight of the golden earrings that he required, was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, beside collars and jewels, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.
[27]And GideonH1439 madeH6213[H8799] an ephodH646 thereof, and putH3322[H8686] it in his cityH5892, even in OphrahH6084: and all IsraelH3478 went thither a whoringH2181[H8799] afterH310 it: which thing became a snareH4170 unto GideonH1439, and to his houseH1004. [27]And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in Ophrah his city: and all Israel went a whoring there after it, which was the destruction of Gideon and his house.
[28]Thus was MidianH4080 subduedH3665[H8735] beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, so that they lifted upH5375[H8800] their headsH7218 no moreH3254[H8804]. And the countryH776 was in quietnessH8252[H8799] fortyH705 yearsH8141 in the daysH3117 of GideonH1439. [28]Thus was Midian brought low before the children of Israel, so that they lift up their heads no more: and the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
[29]And JerubbaalH3378 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 wentH3212[H8799] and dweltH3427[H8799] in his own houseH1004. [29]Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went, and dwelt in his own house.
[30]And GideonH1439 had threescore and tenH7657 sonsH1121 of his bodyH3409 begottenH3318[H8802]: for he had manyH7227 wivesH802. [30]And Gideon had seventy sons begotten of his body: for he had many wives.
[31]And his concubineH6370 that was in ShechemH7927, she also bareH3205[H8804] him a sonH1121, whose nameH8034 he calledH7760[H8799] AbimelechH40. [31]And his concubine that was in Shechem, bear him a son also, whose name he called Abimelech.
[32]And GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 diedH4191[H8799] in a goodH2896 old ageH7872, and was buriedH6912[H8735] in the sepulchreH6913 of JoashH3101 his fatherH1, in OphrahH6084 of the AbiezritesH33. [32]So Gideon the son of Joash died in a good age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father in Ophrah, of the father of the Ezrites.
[33]And it came to pass, as soon as GideonH1439 was deadH4191[H8804], that the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 turned againH7725[H8799], and went a whoringH2181[H8799] afterH310 BaalimH1168, and madeH7760[H8799] BaalberithH1170 their godH430. [33]But when Gideon was dead, the children of Israel turned away and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their God.
[34]And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 rememberedH2142[H8804] not the LORDH3068 their GodH430, who had deliveredH5337[H8688] them out of the handsH3027 of all their enemiesH341[H8802] on every sideH5439: [34]And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, which had delivered the out of the hands of all their enemies on every side.
[35]Neither shewedH6213[H8804] they kindnessH2617 to the houseH1004 of JerubbaalH3378, namely, GideonH1439, according to all the goodnessH2896 which he had shewedH6213[H8804] unto IsraelH3478. [35]Neither showed they mercy on the house of Jerubbaal, or Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.
