[1]The wordH1697 that came to JeremiahH3414 from the LORDH3068, afterH310 that NebuzaradanH5018 the captainH7227 of the guardH2876 had let him goH7971[H8763] from RamahH7414, when he had takenH3947[H8800] him being boundH631[H8803] in chainsH246 amongH8432 all that were carried away captiveH1546 of JerusalemH3389 and JudahH3063, which were carried away captiveH1540[H8716] unto BabylonH894. [1]The word which came to Jeremiah from ‏𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤇‎, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives o Jerusalem and Judah, that were carried away captive unto Babylon.
[2]And the captainH7227 of the guardH2876 tookH3947[H8799] JeremiahH3414, and saidH559[H8799] unto him, The LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath pronouncedH1696[H8765] this evilH7451 upon this placeH4725. [2]And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him: '‏𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤇‎ thy God pronounced this evil upon this place;
[3]Now the LORDH3068 hath broughtH935[H8686] it, and doneH6213[H8799] according as he hath saidH1696[H8765]: because ye have sinnedH2398[H8804] against the LORDH3068, and have not obeyedH8085[H8804] his voiceH6963, therefore this thing is come upon youH1697. [3]And ‏𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤇‎ hath brought it, and done according as He spoke; because ye have sinned against ‏𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤇‎, and have not hearkened to His voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.
[4]And now, behold, I looseH6605[H8765] thee this dayH3117 from the chainsH246 which were upon thine handH3027. If it seem goodH2896[H5869] unto thee to comeH935[H8800] with me into BabylonH894, comeH935[H8798]; and I will look wellH7760[H8799][H5869] unto thee: but if it seem illH7489[H8804][H5869] unto thee to comeH935[H8800] with me into BabylonH894, forbearH2308[H8798]: beholdH7200[H8798], all the landH776 is beforeH6440 thee: whither it seemethH413 goodH2896 and convenientH3477[H5869] for thee to goH3212[H8800], thither goH3212.[H8798] [4]And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which are upon thy hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me in Babylon, come, and I will look well unto thee; but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear; behold, all the land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and right unto thee to go, thither go.—
[5]Now while he was not yet gone backH7725[H8799], he said, Go backH7725[H8798] also to GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227, whom the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 hath made governorH6485[H8689] over the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and dwellH3427[H8798] with him amongH8432 the peopleH5971: or goH3212[H8798] wheresoever it seemeth convenientH3477[H5869] unto thee to goH3212[H8800]. So the captainH7227 of the guardH2876 gaveH5414[H8799] him victualsH737 and a rewardH4864, and let him goH7971.[H8762] [5]Yet he would not go back.—Go back then to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wheresoever it seemeth right unto thee to go.' So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance and a present, and let him go.
[6]Then wentH935[H8799] JeremiahH3414 unto GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 to MizpahH4708; and dweltH3427[H8799] with him amongH8432 the peopleH5971 that were leftH7604[H8737] in the landH776. [6]Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.
[7]Now when all the captainsH8269 of the forcesH2428 which were in the fieldsH7704, even they and their menH582, heardH8085[H8799] that the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 had made GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 governorH6485[H8689] in the landH776, and had committedH6485[H8689] unto him menH582, and womenH802, and childrenH2945, and of the poorH1803 of the landH776, of them that were not carried away captiveH1540[H8717] to BabylonH894; [7]Now when all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;
[8]Then they cameH935[H8799] to GedaliahH1436 to MizpahH4708, even IshmaelH3458 the sonH1121 of NethaniahH5418, and JohananH3110 and JonathanH3129 the sonsH1121 of KareahH7143, and SeraiahH8304 the sonH1121 of TanhumethH8576, and the sonsH1121 of EphaiH5778 the NetophathiteH5200, and JezaniahH3153 the sonH1121 of a MaachathiteH4602, they and their menH582. [8]Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.
[9]And GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227 swareH7650[H8735] unto them and to their menH582, sayingH559[H8800], FearH3372[H8799] not to serveH5647[H8800] the ChaldeansH3778: dwell inH3427[H8798] the landH776, and serveH5647[H8798] the kingH4428 of BabylonH894, and it shall be wellH3190 with youH8799. [9]And Gedaliah the son o Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore unto them and to their men, saying: 'Fear not to serve the Chaldeans; dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
[10]As for me, behold, I will dwellH3427[H8802] at MizpahH4709 to serveH5975[H8800][H6440] the ChaldeansH3778, which will comeH935[H8799] unto us: but ye, gatherH622[H8798] ye wineH3196, and summer fruitsH7019, and oilH8081, and putH7760[H8798] them in your vesselsH3627, and dwellH3427[H8798] in your citiesH5892 that ye have takenH8610.[H8804] [10]As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans that may come unto us; but ye, gather ye wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.'
[11]Likewise when all the JewsH3064 that were in MoabH4124, and among the AmmonitesH5983, and in EdomH123, and that were in all the countriesH776, heardH8085[H8804] that the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 had leftH5414[H8804] a remnantH7611 of JudahH3063, and that he had setH6485[H8689] over them GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227; [11]Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;
[12]Even all the JewsH3064 returned outH7725[H8799] of all placesH4725 whither they were drivenH5080[H8738], and cameH935[H8799] to the landH776 of JudahH3063, to GedaliahH1436, unto MizpahH4708, and gatheredH622[H8799] wineH3196 and summer fruitsH7019 veryH3966 muchH7235.[H8687] [12]Then all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.
[13]Moreover JohananH3110 the sonH1121 of KareahH7143, and all the captainsH8269 of the forcesH2428 that were in the fieldsH7704, cameH935[H8804] to GedaliahH1436 to MizpahH4708, [13]Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,
[14]And saidH559[H8799] unto him, Dost thou certainlyH3045[H8800] knowH3045[H8799] that BaalisH1185 the kingH4428 of the AmmonitesH1121[H5983] hath sentH7971[H8804] IshmaelH3458 the sonH1121 of NethaniahH5418 to slayH5221[H8687][H5315] thee? But GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 believedH539 them notH8689. [14]And said unto him: 'Dost thou know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take thy life?' But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.
[15]Then JohananH3110 the sonH1121 of KareahH7143 spakeH559[H8804] to GedaliahH1436 in MizpahH4709 secretlyH5643, sayingH559[H8800], Let me goH3212[H8799], I pray thee, and I will slayH5221[H8686] IshmaelH3458 the sonH1121 of NethaniahH5418, and no manH376 shall knowH3045[H8799] it: wherefore should he slayH5221[H8686][H5315] thee, that all the JewsH3064 which are gatheredH6908[H8737] unto thee should be scatteredH6327[H8738], and the remnantH7611 in JudahH3063 perishH6?[H8804] [15]Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying: 'Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it; wherefore should he take thy life, that all the Jews that are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?'
[16]But GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of AhikamH296 saidH559[H8799] unto JohananH3110 the sonH1121 of KareahH7143, Thou shalt not doH6213[H8799] this thingH1697: for thou speakestH1696[H8802] falselyH8267 of IshmaelH3458. [16]But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah: 'Thou shalt not do this thing; for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.'
