[1]And there was a man of the Pharisees there, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. |
[1]There was now a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. |
[2]And he came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God; for no one can work those signs which thou workest, unless God be with him. |
[2]He came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man could do these miracles that thou doest, except God were with him. |
[3]Jesus replied, and said to him: Verily, verily, I say to thee, That, unless a man be born anew, he cannot behold the kingdom of God. |
[3]Jesus answered, and said unto him, Verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. |
[4]Nicodemus said to him: How can an old man be born? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? |
[4]Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born which is old? can he enter into his mothers womb again, and be born? |
[5]Jesus replied, and said to him Verily, verily, I say to thee, That, unless a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. |
[5]Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, except that a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. |
[6]That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit. |
[6]That which is born of the flesh, is flesh: and that that is born of the Spirit, is spirit. |
[7]Be not surprised that I said to thee, Ye must be born anew. |
[7]Marvel not that I said to thee, Ye must be born again. |
[8]The wind bloweth where it chooseth; and thou hearest its sound, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one, that is born of the Spirit. |
[8]The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whether it goeth: so is every man that is born of the Spirit. |
[9]Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be? |
[9]Nicodemus answered, and said unto him, How can these things be? |
[10]Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a teacher of Israel, and knowest not these things? |
[10]Jesus answered, and said unto him, Art thou a teacher of Israel, and knowest not these things? |
[11]Verily, verily, I say to thee: We speak, what we know; and we testify to what we have seen; but ye receive not our testimony. |
[11]Verily, verily I say unto thee, we speak that we know, and testify that we have seen: but ye receive not our witness. |
[12]If I have spoken to you of things on earth, and ye believe not; how will ye believe, if I speak of things in heaven? |
[12]If when I tell you earthly things, ye believe not, how should ye believe, if I shall tell you of heavenly things? |
[13]And no one hath ascended to heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. |
[13]For no man ascendeth up to heaven, but he that hath descended from heaven, the Son of man which is in heaven. |
[14]And as Moses elevated the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up: |
[14]And as Moses lift up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lift up, |
[15]that every one who believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life eternal. |
[15]That whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. |
[16]For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him, should not perish, but should have life eternal. |
[16]For God so loved the world, that he hath given his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. |
[17]For God sent not his Son into the world, to condemn the world; but that the world might live by means of him. |
[17]For God sent not his Son into the world, that he should condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. |
[18]He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not, is already condemned; because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. |
[18]He that believeth in him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he believeth not in the Name of the only begotten Son of God. |
[19]And this is the [ground of] condemnation, that light hath come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, for their deeds have been evil. |
[19]And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. |
[20]For every one that doeth abominable things, hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. |
[20]For every man that evil doeth, hateth the light, neither cometh to light, lest his deeds should be reproved. |
[21]But he that doeth right, cometh to the light, that his works may be known to be done in God. |
[21]But he that doeth truth, cometh to the light, that his deeds might be made manifest, that they are wrought according to God. |
[22]After these things, came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he abode with them, and baptized. |
[22]After these things, came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea, and there tarried with them, and baptized. |
[23]And John also was baptizing in 'non, which is near to Salim, because there were many waters there: and the people came, and were baptized. |
[23]And John also baptized in Enon besides Salem, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. |
[24]For John had not yet fallen into prison. |
[24]For John was not yet cast into prison. |
[25]And one of John's disciples and a certain Jew had disputed respecting purification. |
[25]Then there arose a question between Johns disciples and the Jews, about purifying. |
[26]And they came to John, and said to him: Our Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond Jordan, and of whom thou gavest testimony, lo, he also baptizeth; and many go after him. |
[26]And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, he baptizeth, and all men come to him. |
[27]John answered, and said to them: A man cannot take any thing by his own choice, unless it be given him from heaven. |
[27]John answered, and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. |
[28]Ye are witnesses for me, that I said: I am not the Messiah, but am sent to go before him. |
[28]Ye yourselves are my witnesses, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. |
[29]He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: and the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and listeneth to him, rejoiceth with great joy on account of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy, therefore, lo, it is full. |
[29]He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly, because of the bridegrooms voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled. |
[30]To him must be increase, and to me decrease. |
[30]He must increase, but I must decrease. |
[31]For he that cometh from above, is above all; and he that is from the earth, is of the earth, and talketh of the earth. He that cometh from heaven, is above all; |
[31]He that is come from on high, is above all: he that is of the earth, is of the earth, and speaketh of the earth: he that is come from heaven, is above all. |
[32]and what he hath seen and heard, he testifieth; and his testimony, no one receiveth. |
[32]And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth: but no man receiveth his testimony. |
[33]But he that receiveth his testimony, hath set his seal, that God is true. |
[33]He that hath received his testimony, hath sealed that God is true. |
[34]For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God; for God hath not given the Spirit by measure [to him]. |
[34]For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: for God giveth him not the Spirit by measure. |
[35]The Father loveth the Son, and hath given every thing into his hands. |
[35]The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. |
[36]He that believeth on the Son, hath life eternal; but he who obeyeth not the Son, shall not see life. but the wrath of God will abide upon him. |
[36]He that believeth in the Son, hath everlasting life, and he that obeyeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. |
