[1]Now when Adoni-zedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had destroyed it, ( for as he had done to Jericho and to the king thereof, so he had done to Ai and to the king thereof) and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them, |
| [2]That they fearedH3372[H8799] greatlyH3966, because GibeonH1391 was a greatH1419 cityH5892, as oneH259 of the royalH4467 citiesH5892, and because it was greaterH1419 than AiH5857, and all the menH582 thereof were mightyH1368. |
[2]Then they feared exceedingly: for Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities: for it was greater then Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty. |

[3]Wherefore Adoni-zedec king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying, |
| [4]Come upH5927[H8798] unto me, and helpH5826[H8798] me, that we may smiteH5221[H8686] GibeonH1391: for it hath made peaceH7999[H8689] with JoshuaH3091 and with the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. |
[4]Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for they have made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. |
| [5]Therefore the fiveH2568 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567, the kingH4428 of JerusalemH3389, the kingH4428 of HebronH2275, the kingH4428 of JarmuthH3412, the kingH4428 of LachishH3923, the kingH4428 of EglonH5700, gathered themselves togetherH622[H8735], and went upH5927[H8799], they and all their hostsH4264, and encampedH2583[H8799] before GibeonH1391, and made warH3898 against itH8735. |
[5]Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon gathered themselves together, and went up, they with all their hosts, and besieged Gibeon, and made war against it. |
| [6]And the menH582 of GibeonH1391 sentH7971[H8799] unto JoshuaH3091 to the campH4264 to GilgalH1537, sayingH559[H8800], SlackH7503[H8686] not thy handH3027 from thy servantsH5650; come upH5927[H8798] to us quicklyH4120, and saveH3467[H8685] us, and helpH5826[H8798] us: for all the kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567 that dwellH3427[H8802] in the mountainsH2022 are gathered togetherH6908 against usH8738. |
[6]And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua, even to the host to Gilgal, saying, Withdraw not thine hand from thy servants: come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites which dwell in the mountains, are gathered together against us. |
| [7]So JoshuaH3091 ascendedH5927[H8799] from GilgalH1537, he, and all the peopleH5971 of warH4421 with him, and all the mightyH1368 men of valourH2428. |
[7]So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the men of might. |
| [8]And the LORDH3068 saidH559[H8799] unto JoshuaH3091, FearH3372[H8799] them not: for I have deliveredH5414[H8804] them into thine handH3027; there shall not a manH376 of them standH5975[H8799] before theeH6440. |
[8]And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have given them into thine hand: none of them shall stand against thee. |
| [9]JoshuaH3091 therefore cameH935[H8799] unto them suddenlyH6597, and went upH5927[H8804] from GilgalH1537 all nightH3915. |
[9]Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly: for he went up from Gilgal all the night. |
| [10]And the LORDH3068 discomfitedH2000[H8799] them beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, and slewH5221[H8686] them with a greatH1419 slaughterH4347 at GibeonH1391, and chasedH7291[H8799] them along the wayH1870 that goeth upH4608 to BethhoronH1032, and smoteH5221[H8686] them to AzekahH5825, and unto MakkedahH4719. |
[10]And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah and to Makkedah. |
| [11]And it came to pass, as they fledH5127[H8800] from beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, and were in the going downH4174 to BethhoronH1032, that the LORDH3068 cast downH7993[H8689] greatH1419 stonesH68 from heavenH8064 upon them unto AzekahH5825, and they diedH4191[H8799]: they were moreH7227 which diedH4191[H8804] with hailstonesH1259[H68] than they whomH834 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 slewH2026[H8804] with the swordH2719. |
[11]And as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them, until Azekah, and they died: they were more that died with the hailstones, then they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. |
| [12]Then spakeH1696[H8762] JoshuaH3091 to the LORDH3068 in the dayH3117 when the LORDH3068 delivered upH5414[H8800] the AmoritesH567 beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, and he saidH559[H8799] in the sightH5869 of IsraelH3478, SunH8121, stand thou stillH1826[H8798] upon GibeonH1391; and thou, MoonH3394, in the valleyH6010 of AjalonH357. |
[12]Then spake Joshua to the Lord, in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stay thou in Gibeon, and thou moon, in the valley of Ajalon. |
| [13]And the sunH8121 stood stillH1826[H8799], and the moonH3394 stayedH5975[H8804], until the peopleH1471 had avengedH5358[H8799] themselves upon their enemiesH341[H8802]. Is not thisH1931 writtenH3789[H8803] in the bookH5612 of JasherH3477? So the sunH8121 stood stillH5975[H8799] in the midstH2677 of heavenH8064, and hastedH213[H8804] not to go downH935[H8800] about a wholeH8549 dayH3117. |
[13]And the sun abode, and the moon stood still, until the people avenged themselves upon their enemies: (Is not this written in the book of Jasher?) so the sun abode in the midst of the heaven, and hasted not to go down for a whole day. |
| [14]And there was no dayH3117 like that beforeH6440 it or afterH310 it, that the LORDH3068 hearkenedH8085[H8800] unto the voiceH6963 of a manH376: for the LORDH3068 foughtH3898[H8737] for IsraelH3478. |
[14]And there was no day like that before it, nor after it, that the Lord heard the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel. |
| [15]And JoshuaH3091 returnedH7725[H8799], and all IsraelH3478 with him, unto the campH4264 to GilgalH1537. |
[15]After, Joshua returned, and all Israel with him unto the camp to Gilgal: |
| [16]But these fiveH2568 kingsH4428 fledH5127[H8799], and hidH2244[H8735] themselves in a caveH4631 at MakkedahH4719. |
[16]But the five kings fled and were hid in a cave at Makkedah. |
| [17]And it was toldH5046[H8714] JoshuaH3091, sayingH559[H8800], The fiveH2568 kingsH4428 are foundH4672[H8738] hidH2244[H8737] in a caveH4631 at MakkedahH4719. |
[17]And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah. |
| [18]And JoshuaH3091 saidH559[H8799], RollH1556[H8798] greatH1419 stonesH68 upon the mouthH6310 of the caveH4631, and setH6485[H8685] menH582 by it for to keepH8104 themH8800: |
[18]Then Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them. |
| [19]And stayH5975[H8799] ye not, but pursueH7291[H8798] afterH310 your enemiesH341[H8802], and smite the hindmostH2179[H8765] of them; sufferH5414[H8799] them not to enterH935[H8800] into their citiesH5892: for the LORDH3068 your GodH430 hath deliveredH5414[H8804] them into your handH3027. |
[19]But stand ye not still: follow after your enemies, and smite all the hindmost, suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath given them into your hand. |
| [20]And it came to pass, when JoshuaH3091 and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 had made an endH3615[H8763] of slayingH5221[H8687] them with a veryH3966 greatH1419 slaughterH4347, till they were consumedH8552[H8800], that the restH8300 which remainedH8277[H8804] of them enteredH935[H8799] into fencedH4013 citiesH5892. |
[20]And when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with an exceeding great slaughter till they were consumed, and the rest that remained of them were entered into walled cities, |
| [21]And all the peopleH5971 returnedH7725[H8799] to the campH4264 to JoshuaH3091 at MakkedahH4719 in peaceH7965: none movedH2782[H8804] his tongueH3956 against anyH376 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. |
[21]Then all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: no man moved his tongue against the children of Israel. |
| [22]Then saidH559[H8799] JoshuaH3091, OpenH6605[H8798] the mouthH6310 of the caveH4631, and bring outH3318[H8685] those fiveH2568 kingsH4428 unto me out of the caveH4631. |
[22]After, Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out these five kings unto me forth of the cave. |
| [23]And they didH6213[H8799] so, and brought forthH3318[H8686] those fiveH2568 kingsH4428 unto him out of the caveH4631, the kingH4428 of JerusalemH3389, the kingH4428 of HebronH2275, the kingH4428 of JarmuthH3412, the kingH4428 of LachishH3923, and the kingH4428 of EglonH5700. |
[23]And they did so, and brought out those five kings unto him forth of the cave, even the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. |
| [24]And it came to pass, when they brought outH3318[H8687] those kingsH4428 unto JoshuaH3091, that JoshuaH3091 calledH7121[H8799] for all the menH376 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559[H8799] unto the captainsH7101 of the menH582 of warH4421 which wentH1980[H8804] with him, Come nearH7126[H8798], putH7760[H8798] your feetH7272 upon the necksH6677 of these kingsH4428. And they came nearH7126[H8799], and putH7760[H8799] their feetH7272 upon the necks of themH6677. |
[24]And when they had brought out those kings unto Joshua, Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chief of the men of war, which went with him, Come near, set your feet upon the necks of these kings: and they came near and set their feet upon their necks. |
| [25]And JoshuaH3091 saidH559[H8799] unto them, FearH3372[H8799] not, nor be dismayedH2865[H8735], be strongH2388[H8798] and of good courageH553[H8798]: for thus shall the LORDH3068 doH6213[H8799] to all your enemiesH341[H8802] against whom ye fightH3898.[H8737] |
[25]And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be faint hearted , but be strong and of a good courage: for thus will the Lord do to all your enemies, against whom ye fight. |
| [26]And afterwardH310 JoshuaH3091 smoteH5221[H8686] them, and slewH4191[H8686] them, and hangedH8518[H8799] them on fiveH2568 treesH6086: and they were hangingH8518[H8803] upon the treesH6086 until the eveningH6153. |
[26]So then Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees, and they hanged still upon the trees until the evening. |
| [27]And it came to pass at the timeH6256 of the going downH935[H8800] of the sunH8121, that JoshuaH3091 commandedH6680[H8765], and they took them downH3381[H8686] off the treesH6086, and castH7993[H8686] them into the caveH4631 wherein they had been hidH2244[H8738], and laidH7760[H8799] greatH1419 stonesH68 in the cave'sH4631 mouthH6310, which remain until this veryH6106 dayH3117. |
[27]And at the going down of the sun, Joshua gave commandment, that they should take them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave (wherein they had been hid) and they laid great stones upon the cave's mouth, which remain until this day. |
| [28]And that dayH3117 JoshuaH3091 tookH3920[H8804] MakkedahH4719, and smoteH5221[H8686] it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and the kingH4428 thereof he utterly destroyedH2763[H8689], them, and all the soulsH5315 that were therein; he letH7604[H8689] none remainH8300: and he didH6213[H8799] to the kingH4428 of MakkedahH4719 as he didH6213[H8804] unto the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405. |
[28]And that same day Joshua took Makkedah and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof destroyed he with them, and all the souls that were therein, he let none remain: for he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho. |
| [29]Then JoshuaH3091 passedH5674[H8799] from MakkedahH4719, and all IsraelH3478 with him, unto LibnahH3841, and foughtH3898[H8735] against LibnahH3841: |
[29]Then Joshua went from Makkedah, and all Israel with him unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah. |
| [30]And the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414[H8799] it also, and the kingH4428 thereof, into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478; and he smoteH5221[H8686] it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and all the soulsH5315 that were therein; he letH7604[H8689] none remainH8300 in it; but didH6213[H8799] unto the kingH4428 thereof as he didH6213[H8804] unto the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405. |
[30]And the Lord gave it also and the king thereof into the hand of Israel: and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein: he let none remain in it: for he did unto the king thereof, as he had done unto the king of Jericho. |
| [31]And JoshuaH3091 passedH5674[H8799] from LibnahH3841, and all IsraelH3478 with him, unto LachishH3923, and encampedH2583[H8799] against it, and foughtH3898 against itH8735: |
[31]And Joshua departed from Libnah, and all Israel with him unto Lachish, and besieged it, and assaulted it. |
| [32]And the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414[H8799] LachishH3923 into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478, which tookH3920[H8799] it on the secondH8145 dayH3117, and smoteH5221[H8686] it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and all the soulsH5315 that were therein, according to all that he had doneH6213[H8804] to LibnahH3841. |
[32]And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all as he had done to Libnah. |
| [33]Then HoramH2036 kingH4428 of GezerH1507 came upH5927[H8804] to helpH5826[H8800] LachishH3923; and JoshuaH3091 smoteH5221[H8686] him and his peopleH5971, until he had leftH7604[H8689] him none remainingH8300. |
[33]Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish: but Joshua smote him and his people, until none of his remained. |
| [34]And from LachishH3923 JoshuaH3091 passedH5674[H8799] unto EglonH5700, and all IsraelH3478 with him; and they encampedH2583[H8799] against it, and foughtH3898 against itH8735: |
[34]And from Lachish Joshua departed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged it, and assaulted it, |
| [35]And they tookH3920[H8799] it on that dayH3117, and smoteH5221[H8686] it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and all the soulsH5315 that were therein he utterly destroyedH2763[H8689] that dayH3117, according to all that he had doneH6213[H8804] to LachishH3923. |
[35]And they took it the same day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed the same day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. |
| [36]And JoshuaH3091 went upH5927[H8799] from EglonH5700, and all IsraelH3478 with him, unto HebronH2275; and they foughtH3898 against itH8735: |
[36]Then Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him unto Hebron, and they fought against it. |
| [37]And they tookH3920[H8799] it, and smoteH5221[H8686] it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and the kingH4428 thereof, and all the citiesH5892 thereof, and all the soulsH5315 that were therein; he leftH7604[H8689] none remainingH8300, according to all that he had doneH6213[H8804] to EglonH5700; but destroyedH2763[H8686] it utterly, and all the souls that were thereinH5315. |
[37]And when they had taken it, they smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein: he left none remaining, according to all as he had done to Eglon: for he destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein. |
| [38]And JoshuaH3091 returnedH7725[H8799], and all IsraelH3478 with him, to DebirH1688; and foughtH3898 against itH8735: |
[38]So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him to Debir, and fought against it. |
| [39]And he tookH3920[H8799] it, and the kingH4428 thereof, and all the citiesH5892 thereof; and they smoteH5221[H8686] them with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and utterly destroyedH2763[H8686] all the soulsH5315 that were therein; he leftH7604[H8689] none remainingH8300: as he had doneH6213[H8804] to HebronH2275, so he didH6213[H8804] to DebirH1688, and to the kingH4428 thereof; as he had doneH6213[H8804] also to LibnahH3841, and to her kingH4428. |
[39]And when he had taken it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein, he let none remain: as he did to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof, as he had also done to Libnah, and to the king thereof. |
| [40]So JoshuaH3091 smoteH5221[H8686] all the countryH776 of the hillsH2022, and of the southH5045, and of the valeH8219, and of the springsH794, and all their kingsH4428: he leftH7604[H8689] none remainingH8300, but utterly destroyedH2763[H8689] all that breathedH5397, as the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 commandedH6680.[H8765] |
[40]So Joshua smote all the hill countries, and the south countries, and the valleys, and the hillsides, and all their kings, and let none remain, but utterly destroyed every soul, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded. |
| [41]And JoshuaH3091 smoteH5221[H8686] them from KadeshbarneaH6947 even unto GazaH5804, and all the countryH776 of GoshenH1657, even unto GibeonH1391. |
[41]And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Azzah, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. |
| [42]And all these kingsH4428 and their landH776 did JoshuaH3091 takeH3920[H8804] at oneH259 timeH6471, because the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 foughtH3898[H8737] for IsraelH3478. |
[42]And all these kings, and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. |
| [43]And JoshuaH3091 returnedH7725[H8799], and all IsraelH3478 with him, unto the campH4264 to GilgalH1537. |
[43]Afterward, Joshua and all Israel with him returned unto the camp in Gilgal. |
