[1]There was also a lotH1486 for the tribeH4294 of ManassehH4519; for he was the firstbornH1060 of JosephH3130; to wit, for MachirH4353 the firstbornH1060 of ManassehH4519, the fatherH1 of GileadH1568: because he was a manH376 of warH4421, therefore he had GileadH1568 and BashanH1316. [1]This was also the lot of the tribe of Manasseh: for he was the firstborn of Joseph, to wit, of Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, and the father of Gilead: now because he was a man of war, he had Gilead and Bashan.
[2]There was also a lot for the restH3498[H8737] of the childrenH1121 of ManassehH4519 by their familiesH4940; for the childrenH1121 of AbiezerH44, and for the childrenH1121 of HelekH2507, and for the childrenH1121 of AsrielH844, and for the childrenH1121 of ShechemH7928, and for the childrenH1121 of HepherH2660, and for the childrenH1121 of ShemidaH8061: these were the maleH2145 childrenH1121 of ManassehH4519 the sonH1121 of JosephH3130 by their familiesH4940. [2]And also of the rest of the sons of Manasseh by their families, even of the sons of Abiezer, and of the sons of Helek, and of the sons of Asriel, and of the sons of Shechem, and of the sons of Hepher, and of the sons of Shemida: these were the males of Manasseh, the son of Joseph according to their families.
[3]But ZelophehadH6765, the sonH1121 of HepherH2660, the sonH1121 of GileadH1568, the sonH1121 of MachirH4353, the sonH1121 of ManassehH4519, had no sonsH1121, but daughtersH1323: and these are the namesH8034 of his daughtersH1323, MahlahH4244, and NoahH5270, HoglahH2295, MilcahH4435, and TirzahH8656. [3]But Zelophehad the son of Hephir, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah:
[4]And they came nearH7126[H8799] beforeH6440 EleazarH499 the priestH3548, and beforeH6440 JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, and beforeH6440 the princesH5387, sayingH559[H8800], The LORDH3068 commandedH6680[H8765] MosesH4872 to giveH5414[H8800] us an inheritanceH5159 amongH8432 our brethrenH251. Therefore according to the commandmentH6310 of the LORDH3068 he gaveH5414[H8799] them an inheritanceH5159 amongH8432 the brethrenH251 of their fatherH1. [4]Which came before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren: therefore according to the commandment of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
[5]And there fellH5307[H8799] tenH6235 portionsH2256 to ManassehH4519, beside the landH776 of GileadH1568 and BashanH1316, which were on the other sideH5676 JordanH3383; [5]And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side Jordan,
[6]Because the daughtersH1323 of ManassehH4519 hadH5157[H8804] an inheritanceH5159 amongH8432 his sonsH1121: and the restH3498[H8737] of Manasseh'sH4519 sonsH1121 had the landH776 of GileadH1568. [6]Because the daughters of Manasseh did inherit among his sons: and Manasseh's other sons had the land of Gilead.
[7]And the coastH1366 of ManassehH4519 was from AsherH836 to MichmethahH4366, that lieth beforeH6440 ShechemH7927; and the borderH1366 went alongH1980[H8804] on the right handH3225 unto the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of EntappuahH5887. [7]So the borders of Manasseh were from Asher to Michmethah that lieth before Shechem, and this border goeth on the right hand, even unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
[8]Now ManassehH4519 had the landH776 of TappuahH8599: but TappuahH8599 on the borderH1366 of ManassehH4519 belonged to the childrenH1121 of EphraimH669; [8]The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah beside the border of Manasseh belongeth to the sons of Ephraim.
[9]And the coastH1366 descendedH3381[H8804] unto the riverH5158 KanahH7071, southwardH5045 of the riverH5158: these citiesH5892 of EphraimH669 are amongH8432 the citiesH5892 of ManassehH4519: the coastH1366 of ManassehH4519 also was on the north sideH6828 of the riverH5158, and the outgoingsH8444 of it were at the seaH3220: [9]Also this border goeth down unto the river Kanah southward to the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: and the border of Manasseh is on the north side of the river, and the ends of it are at the sea,
[10]SouthwardH5045 it was Ephraim'sH669, and northwardH6828 it was Manasseh'sH4519, and the seaH3220 is his borderH1366; and they met togetherH6293[H8799] in AsherH836 on the northH6828, and in IssacharH3485 on the eastH4217. [10]The south pertaineth to Ephraim, and the north to Manasseh, and the sea is his border: and they met together in Asher northward, and in Issachar eastward.
[11]And ManassehH4519 had in IssacharH3485 and in AsherH836 BethsheanH1052 and her townsH1323, and IbleamH2991 and her townsH1323, and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of DorH1756 and her townsH1323, and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of EndorH5874 and her townsH1323, and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of TaanachH8590 and her townsH1323, and the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of MegiddoH4023 and her townsH1323, even threeH7969 countriesH5316. [11]And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher, Beth-shean, and her towns, and Ibleam, and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor with the towns thereof, and the inhabitants of En-dor with the towns thereof, and the inhabitants of Thaanach with her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo with the towns of the same, even three countries.
[12]Yet the childrenH1121 of ManassehH4519 couldH3201[H8804] not drive outH3423[H8687] the inhabitants of those citiesH5892; but the CanaanitesH3669 wouldH2974[H8686] dwellH3427[H8800] in that landH776. [12]Yet the children of Manasseh could not destroy those cities, but the Canaanites dwelled still in that land.
[13]Yet it came to pass, when the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 were waxen strongH2388[H8804], that they putH5414[H8799] the CanaanitesH3669 to tributeH4522; but did not utterlyH3423[H8687] drive them outH3423.[H8689] [13]Nevertheless, when the children of Israel were strong, they put the Canaanites under tribute, but cast them not out wholly.
[14]And the childrenH1121 of JosephH3130 spakeH1696[H8762] unto JoshuaH3091, sayingH559[H8800], Why hast thou givenH5414[H8804] me but oneH259 lotH1486 and oneH259 portionH2256 to inheritH5159, seeing I am a greatH7227 peopleH5971, forasmuch asH5704 the LORDH3068 hath blessedH1288[H8765] me hithertoH3541? [14]Then the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot, and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, for as much as the Lord hath blessed me hitherto?
[15]And JoshuaH3091 answeredH559[H8799] them, If thou be a greatH7227 peopleH5971, then get thee upH5927[H8798] to the woodH3293 country, and cut downH1254[H8765] for thyself there in the landH776 of the PerizzitesH6522 and of the giantsH7497, if mountH2022 EphraimH669 be too narrowH213 for theeH8804. [15]Joshua then answered them, If thou be much people, get thee up to the wood, and cut trees for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites, and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
[16]And the childrenH1121 of JosephH3130 saidH559[H8799], The hillH2022 is not enoughH4672[H8735] for us: and all the CanaanitesH3669 that dwellH3427[H8802] in the landH776 of the valleyH6010 have chariotsH7393 of ironH1270, both they who are of BethsheanH1052 and her townsH1323, and they who are of the valleyH6010 of JezreelH3157. [16]Then the children of Joseph said, The mountain will not be enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the low country have chariots of iron, as well they in Beth-shean, and in the towns of the same, as they in the valley of Izreel.
[17]And JoshuaH3091 spakeH559[H8799] unto the houseH1004 of JosephH3130, even to EphraimH669 and to ManassehH4519, sayingH559[H8800], Thou art a greatH7227 peopleH5971, and hast greatH1419 powerH3581: thou shalt not have oneH259 lot onlyH1486: [17]And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, to Ephraim, and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power, and shalt not have one lot.
[18]But the mountainH2022 shall be thine; for it is a woodH3293, and thou shalt cut it downH1254[H8765]: and the outgoingsH8444 of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive outH3423[H8686] the CanaanitesH3669, though they have ironH1270 chariotsH7393, and though they be strongH2389. [18]Therefore the mountain shall be thine: for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the ends of it shall be thine, and thou shalt cast out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.
