[1]επειδηπερ πολλοι επεχειρησαν αναταξασθαι διηγησιν περι των πεπληροφορημενων εν ημιν πραγματων [1]SINCE many have desired to have in writing the story of those works, with which we are familiar,
[2]καθως παρεδοσαν ημιν οι απ αρχης αυτοπται και υπηρεται γενομενοι του λογου [2]According to what was handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of that very word,
[3]εδοξεν καμοι παρηκολουθηκοτι ανωθεν πασιν ακριβως καθεξης σοι γραψαι κρατιστε θεοφιλε [3]And since these were seen by me also because I was near and considered them all very carefully, I will therefore write to you everything in its order, most honorable Theophilus,
[4]ινα επιγνως περι ων κατηχηθης λογων την ασφαλειαν [4]So that you may know the truth of the words, by which you were made a convert.
[5]εγενετο εν ταις ημεραις ηρωδου βασιλεως της ιουδαιας ιερευς τις ονοματι ζαχαριας εξ εφημεριας αβια και γυνη αυτω εκ των θυγατερων ααρων και το ονομα αυτης ελισαβετ [5]There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a priest whose name was Zacharias, of the order of ministry of the house of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
[6]ησαν δε δικαιοι αμφοτεροι εναντιον του θεου πορευομενοι εν πασαις ταις εντολαις και δικαιωμασιν του κυριου αμεμπτοι [6]They were both righteous before God, and walked in all his commandments, and in the righteousness of the Lord without blame.
[7]και ουκ ην αυτοις τεκνον καθοτι ην [η] η ελισαβετ στειρα και αμφοτεροι προβεβηκοτες εν ταις ημεραις αυτων ησαν [7]But they had no son, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well on in years.
[8]εγενετο δε εν τω ιερατευειν αυτον εν τη ταξει της εφημεριας αυτου εναντι του θεου [8]And it happened, while he was ministering in the order of his ministry before God,
[9]κατα το εθος της ιερατειας ελαχεν του θυμιασαι εισελθων εις τον ναον του κυριου [9]According to the custom of the priesthood, his turn came to burn incense; so he entered the temple of the Lord.
[10]και παν το πληθος ην του λαου προσευχομενον εξω τη ωρα του θυμιαματος [10]And all the congregation of the people prayed outside, at the time of incense.
[11]ωφθη δε αυτω αγγελος κυριου εστως εκ δεξιων του θυσιαστηριου του θυμιαματος [11]And the angel of the Lord appeared to Zacharias, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
[12]και εταραχθη ζαχαριας ιδων και φοβος επεπεσεν επ αυτον [12]And when Zacharias saw him he became dumbfounded, and fear came upon him.
[13]ειπεν δε προς αυτον ο αγγελος μη φοβου ζαχαρια διοτι εισηκουσθη η δεησις σου και η γυνη σου ελισαβετ γεννησει υιον σοι και καλεσεις το ονομα αυτου ιωαννην [13]And the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias; for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John.
[14]και εσται χαρα σοι και αγαλλιασις και πολλοι επι τη γενεσει αυτου χαρησονται [14]And you will have joy and gladness; and a great many will rejoice at his birth.
[15]εσται γαρ μεγας ενωπιον [του] κυριου και οινον και σικερα ου μη πιη και πνευματος αγιου πλησθησεται ετι εκ κοιλιας μητρος αυτου [15]For he will be great before the Lord, and he will not drink wine and strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, while he is still in the womb of his mother.
[16]και πολλους των υιων ισραηλ επιστρεψει επι κυριον τον θεον αυτων [16]And many Israelites he will cause to turn to the Lord their God.
[17]και αυτος προελευσεται ενωπιον αυτου εν πνευματι και δυναμει ηλιου επιστρεψαι καρδιας πατερων επι τεκνα και απειθεις εν φρονησει δικαιων ετοιμασαι κυριω λαον κατεσκευασμενον [17]And he will go before them with the spirit and the power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of parents to their children, and those who are disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous; and he will prepare a true people for the Lord.
[18]και ειπεν ζαχαριας προς τον αγγελον κατα τι γνωσομαι τουτο εγω γαρ ειμι πρεσβυτης και η γυνη μου προβεβηκυια εν ταις ημεραις αυτης [18]And Zacharias said to the angel, How will I understand this? for I am an old man, and my wife is well on in years.
[19]και αποκριθεις ο αγγελος ειπεν αυτω εγω ειμι γαβριηλ ο παρεστηκως ενωπιον του θεου και απεσταλην λαλησαι προς σε και ευαγγελισασθαι σοι ταυτα [19]And the angel answered, saying to him, I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I am sent to speak to you, and to bring you these glad tidings.
[20]και ιδου εση σιωπων και μη δυναμενος λαλησαι αχρι ης ημερας γενηται ταυτα ανθ ων ουκ επιστευσας τοις λογοις μου οιτινες πληρωθησονται εις τον καιρον αυτων [20]From henceforth you will be dumb, and not able to speak, till the day these things happen, because you did not believe these my words which are to be fulfilled in their time.
[21]και ην ο λαος προσδοκων τον ζαχαριαν και εθαυμαζον εν τω χρονιζειν εν τω ναω αυτον [21]Now the people stood waiting for Zacharias, and wondered because he remained so long in the temple.
[22]εξελθων δε ουκ εδυνατο λαλησαι αυτοις και επεγνωσαν οτι οπτασιαν εωρακεν εν τω ναω και αυτος ην διανευων αυτοις και διεμενεν κωφος [22]When Zacharias came out, he could not speak with them; and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them with his eyes, but remained dumb.
[23]και εγενετο ως επλησθησαν αι ημεραι της λειτουργιας αυτου απηλθεν εις τον οικον αυτου [23]And when the days of his ministry were finished, he went to his house.
[24]μετα δε ταυτας τας ημερας συνελαβεν ελισαβετ η γυνη αυτου και περιεκρυβεν εαυτην μηνας πεντε λεγουσα [24]And it happened after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself for five months; and she said,
[25]οτι ουτως μοι πεποιηκεν κυριος εν ημεραις αις επειδεν αφελειν ονειδος μου εν ανθρωποις [25]The Lord has done these things to me in the days that he has been mindful of me, to remove my reproach among men.
[26]εν δε τω μηνι τω εκτω απεσταλη ο αγγελος γαβριηλ απο του θεου εις πολιν της γαλιλαιας η ονομα ναζαρεθ [26]Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to Galilee, to a city called Nazareth,
[27]προς παρθενον εμνηστευμενην ανδρι ω ονομα ιωσηφ εξ οικου δαυιδ και το ονομα της παρθενου μαριαμ [27]To a virgin who was acquired for a price for a man named Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary.
[28]και εισελθων προς αυτην ειπεν χαιρε κεχαριτωμενη ο κυριος μετα σου [28]And the angel went in and said to her, Peace be to you, O full of grace; our Lord is with you, O blessed one among women.
[29]η δε επι τω λογω διεταραχθη και διελογιζετο ποταπος ειη ο ασπασμος ουτος [29]When she saw him, she was disturbed at his word, and wondered what kind of salutation this could be.
[30]και ειπεν ο αγγελος αυτη μη φοβου μαριαμ ευρες γαρ χαριν παρα τω θεω [30]And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary; for you have found grace with God.
[31]και ιδου συλλημψη εν γαστρι και τεξη υιον και καλεσεις το ονομα αυτου ιησουν [31]For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call his name Jesus.
[32]ουτος εσται μεγας και υιος υψιστου κληθησεται και δωσει αυτω κυριος ο θεος τον θρονον δαυιδ του πατρος αυτου [32]He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
[33]και βασιλευσει επι τον οικον ιακωβ εις τους αιωνας και της βασιλειας αυτου ουκ εσται τελος [33]And he will rule over the house of Jacob for ever; and there will be no limit to his kingdom.
[34]ειπεν δε μαριαμ προς τον αγγελον πως-I εσται τουτο επει ανδρα ου γινωσκω [34]Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, for no man has known me.
[35]και αποκριθεις ο αγγελος ειπεν αυτη πνευμα αγιον επελευσεται επι σε και δυναμις υψιστου επισκιασει σοι διο και το γεννωμενον αγιον κληθησεται υιος θεου [35]The angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come, and the power of the Highest will rest upon you; therefore the one who is to be born of you is holy, and he will be called the Son of God.
[36]και ιδου ελισαβετ η συγγενις σου και αυτη συνειληφεν υιον εν γηρει αυτης και ουτος μην εκτος εστιν αυτη τη καλουμενη στειρα [36]And behold, Elizabeth your kinswoman has also conceived a son in her old age; and yet this is the sixth month with her, who is called barren.
[37]οτι ουκ αδυνατησει παρα του θεου παν ρημα [37]For nothing is impossible for God.
[38]ειπεν δε μαριαμ ιδου η δουλη κυριου γενοιτο μοι κατα το ρημα σου και απηλθεν απ αυτης ο αγγελος [38]Mary said, Here I am, a handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. And the angel went away from her.
[39]αναστασα δε μαριαμ εν ταις ημεραις ταυταις επορευθη εις την ορεινην μετα σπουδης εις πολιν ιουδα [39]In those days, Mary rose up, and went hurriedly to a mountain, to a city of Judaea.
[40]και εισηλθεν εις τον οικον ζαχαριου και ησπασατο την ελισαβετ [40]And she entered the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth.
[41]και εγενετο ως ηκουσεν τον ασπασμον της μαριας η ελισαβετ εσκιρτησεν το βρεφος εν τη κοιλια αυτης και επλησθη πνευματος αγιου η ελισαβετ [41]And when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
[42]και ανεφωνησεν κραυγη μεγαλη και ειπεν ευλογημενη συ εν γυναιξιν και ευλογημενος ο καρπος της κοιλιας σου [42]And she cried in a loud voice, and said to Mary, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
[43]και ποθεν-I μοι τουτο ινα ελθη η μητηρ του κυριου μου προς εμε [43]How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
[44]ιδου γαρ ως εγενετο η φωνη του ασπασμου σου εις τα ωτα μου εσκιρτησεν εν αγαλλιασει το βρεφος εν τη κοιλια μου [44]For behold, when the voice of your salutation fell on my ears, the babe in my womb leaped with great joy.
[45]και μακαρια η πιστευσασα οτι εσται τελειωσις τοις λελαλημενοις αυτη παρα κυριου [45]And blessed is she who believed; for there will be a fulfillment of the things which were spoken to her from the Lord.
[46]και ειπεν μαριαμ μεγαλυνει η ψυχη μου τον κυριον [46]And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord,
[47]και ηγαλλιασεν το πνευμα μου επι τω θεω τω σωτηρι μου [47]And my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
[48]οτι επεβλεψεν επι την ταπεινωσιν της δουλης αυτου ιδου γαρ απο του νυν μακαριουσιν με πασαι αι γενεαι [48]For he has regarded the meekness of his handmaid; for behold, from henceforth, all generations shall envy me.
[49]οτι εποιησεν μοι μεγαλα ο δυνατος και αγιον το ονομα αυτου [49]For he who is mighty has done great things to me; holy is his name.
[50]και το ελεος αυτου εις γενεας και γενεας τοις φοβουμενοις αυτον [50]And his mercy is for centuries and generations, upon those who fear him.
[51]εποιησεν κρατος εν βραχιονι αυτου διεσκορπισεν υπερηφανους διανοια καρδιας αυτων [51]He has brought victory with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.
[52]καθειλεν δυναστας απο θρονων και υψωσεν ταπεινους [52]He has put down the mighty from their seats, and he has lifted up the meek.
[53]πεινωντας ενεπλησεν αγαθων και πλουτουντας εξαπεστειλεν κενους [53]He has filled the hungry with good things; and dismissed the rich empty.
[54]αντελαβετο ισραηλ παιδος αυτου μνησθηναι ελεους [54]He has helped his servant Israel, and has remembered his mercy,
[55]καθως ελαλησεν προς τους πατερας ημων τω αβρααμ και τω σπερματι αυτου εις τον αιωνα [55]Just as he spoke with our forefathers, with Abraham, and with his seed for ever.
[56]εμεινεν δε μαριαμ συν αυτη ως μηνας τρεις και υπεστρεψεν εις τον οικον αυτης [56]Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her own home.
[57]τη δε ελισαβετ επλησθη ο χρονος του τεκειν αυτην και εγεννησεν υιον [57]Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son.
[58]και ηκουσαν οι περιοικοι και οι συγγενεις αυτης οτι εμεγαλυνεν κυριος το ελεος αυτου μετ αυτης και συνεχαιρον αυτη [58]And when her neighbors and relatives heard that God had increased his mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.
[59]και εγενετο εν τη ημερα τη ογδοη ηλθον περιτεμειν το παιδιον και εκαλουν αυτο επι τω ονοματι του πατρος αυτου ζαχαριαν [59]And it happened on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the boy; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
[60]και αποκριθεισα η μητηρ αυτου ειπεν ουχι αλλα κληθησεται ιωαννης [60]And his mother answered and said to them, Not so; but he should be called John.
[61]και ειπαν προς αυτην οτι ουδεις εστιν εκ της συγγενειας σου ος καλειται τω ονοματι τουτω [61]And they said to her, There is no man in your family, who is called by this name.
[62]ενενευον δε τω πατρι αυτου το τι αν θελοι καλεισθαι αυτο [62]Then they made signs to his father, what he wanted to call him.
[63]και αιτησας πινακιδιον εγραψεν λεγων ιωαννης εστιν ονομα αυτου και εθαυμασαν παντες [63]And he asked for a tablet and wrote, saying, John is his name. And every one was surprised.
[64]ανεωχθη δε το στομα αυτου παραχρημα και η γλωσσα αυτου και ελαλει ευλογων τον θεον [64]And immediately his mouth and his tongue were opened, and he spoke and blessed God.
[65]και εγενετο επι παντας φοβος τους περιοικουντας αυτους και εν ολη τη ορεινη της ιουδαιας διελαλειτο παντα τα ρηματα ταυτα [65]And fear came on all their neighbors; and these things were spoken throughout the mountain of Judaea.
[66]και εθεντο παντες οι ακουσαντες εν τη καρδια αυτων λεγοντες τι αρα το παιδιον τουτο εσται και γαρ χειρ κυριου ην μετ αυτου [66]And all who heard it reasoned in their hearts, saying, What a boy he will be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
[67]και ζαχαριας ο πατηρ αυτου επλησθη πνευματος αγιου και επροφητευσεν λεγων [67]And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, and said,
[68]ευλογητος κυριος ο θεος του ισραηλ οτι επεσκεψατο και εποιησεν λυτρωσιν τω λαω αυτου [68]Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel; for he has visited his people and wrought a salvation for them.
[69]και ηγειρεν κερας σωτηριας ημιν εν οικω δαυιδ παιδος αυτου [69]And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
[70]καθως ελαλησεν δια στοματος των αγιων απ αιωνος προφητων αυτου [70]Just as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets who have been for ages,
[71]σωτηριαν εξ εχθρων ημων και εκ χειρος παντων των μισουντων ημας [71]That he would save us from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us.
[72]ποιησαι ελεος μετα των πατερων ημων και μνησθηναι διαθηκης αγιας αυτου [72]He has shown mercy to our fathers, and he has remembered his holy covenants;
[73]ορκον ον ωμοσεν προς αβρααμ τον πατερα ημων του δουναι ημιν [73]And the oaths which he swore to Abraham our father,
[74]αφοβως εκ χειρος εχθρων ρυσθεντας λατρευειν αυτω [74]To grant to us, that we may be saved from the hand of our enemies, and serve before him without fear,
[75]εν οσιοτητι και δικαιοσυνη ενωπιον αυτου πασαις ταις ημεραις ημων [75]In justice and righteousness all our days.
[76]και συ δε παιδιον προφητης υψιστου κληθηση προπορευση γαρ ενωπιον κυριου ετοιμασαι οδους αυτου [76]And you, boy, will be called the prophet of the Highest; for you will go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his way;
[77]του δουναι γνωσιν σωτηριας τω λαω αυτου εν αφεσει αμαρτιων αυτων [77]To give knowledge of life to his people by the forgiveness of their sins,
[78]δια σπλαγχνα ελεους θεου ημων εν οις επισκεψεται ημας ανατολη εξ υψους [78]Through the mercy and kindness of our God; whereby we shall be visited by a ray from above,
[79]επιφαναι τοις εν σκοτει και σκια θανατου καθημενοις του κατευθυναι τους ποδας ημων εις οδον ειρηνης [79]To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
[80]το δε παιδιον ηυξανεν και εκραταιουτο πνευματι και ην εν ταις ερημοις εως ημερας αναδειξεως αυτου προς τον ισραηλ [80]The boy grew and became strong in spirit; and he was in the desert until the day of his appearance to Israel.
