Peshitta (Lamsa, 1933)
Pes(Lam)
[1]And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks, and seven rams. [1]AND Balaam said to Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.
[2]And Balak did as Balaam said, and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram. [2]And Balak did as Balaam had told him; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.
[3]Then Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by the burnt offering, and I will go, if so be that the Lord will come and meet me: and whatsoever he showed me, I will tell thee: so he went forth alone. [3]And Balaam said to Balak, Stand here by your burnt offerings, and I will go. Perhaps the LORD will come to meet me; and whatever he shows me I will tell you. So he went away quietly.
[4]And God met Balaam, and Balaam said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram. [4]And God appeared to Balaam and said to him, You have prepared seven altars, and have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.
[5]And the Lord put an answer in Balaam's mouth, and said, Go again to Balak, and say on this wise. [5]Then the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth and said to him, Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.
[6]So when he returned unto him, lo, he stood by his burnt offering, he, and all the princes of Moab. [6]And he returned to him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt offerings, he and all the princes of Moab.
[7]Then he uttered his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse Jacob for my sake: come, and detest Israel. [7]And he took up his parable and said, Balak the king of the Moabites has brought me from Aram, from the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, destroy Israel for me.
[8]How shall I curse, where God hath not cursed? Or how shall I detest, where the Lord hath not detested? [8]How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How can I destroy whom the LORD has not destroyed?
[9]For from the top of the rocks I did see him, and from the hills I did behold him: lo, the people shall dwell by themselves, and shall not be reckoned among the nations. [9]For from the top of the mountains I see him, and from the hills I behold him; lo, the people are dwelling alone and are not reckoned among the nations.
[10]Who can tell the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his. [10]Who can count the multitude of the descendants of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like theirs!
[11]Then Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and behold, thou hast blessed them altogether. [11]And Balak said to Balaam, What have you done to me? I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have surely blessed them.
[12]And he answered, and said, Must I not take heed to speak that, which the Lord hath put in my mouth? [12]And Balaam answered and said, Behold, whatever the LORD puts in my mouth that thing will I speak
[13]And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, whence thou mayest see them, and thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: therefore curse them out of that place for my sake. [13]And Balak said to him, Come with me to another place, from which you may see them; but you shall see the utmost part of them, and shall not see them all; and curse them for me from thence.
[14]And he brought him into Sede-sophim to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock, and a ram on every altar. [14]And he brought him to the field of watchmen, to the top of the hill, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.
[15]After, he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, and I will meet the Lord yonder. [15]And Balaam said to Balak, Stand here by your burnt offerings while I go yonder.
[16]And the Lord met Balaam, and put an answer in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus. [16]And the LORD appeared to Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said to him, Go again to Balak and say thus.
[17]And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him: so Balak said unto him, What hath the Lord said? [17]And when he came to him, he was standing by his burnt offerings, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, What has the LORD spoken?
[18]And he uttered his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear: hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor. [18]And he took up his parable and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; and give ear to my testimony, O son of Zippor;
[19]God is not as man, that he should lie, neither as the son of man that he should repent: hath he said and shall he not do it? And hath he spoken, and shall he not accomplish it? [19]God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should be given counsel; he speaks and he shall do it, and his word abides for ever.
[20]Behold, I have received commandment to bless: for he hath blessed, and I cannot alter it. [20]Behold, I was brought here to bless; and I cannot reverse the blessing.
[21]He seeth none iniquity in Jacob, nor seeth no transgression in Israel: the Lord his God is with him, and the joyful shout of a king is among them. [21]I do not behold iniquity in Jacob, neither have I seen malice in Israel; the LORD his God is with him, and the glory of his King is among them.
[22]God brought them out of Egypt: their strength is as an unicorn. [22]God brought them out of Egypt with his might and excellency.
[23]For there is no sorcery in Jacob, nor soothsaying in Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought? [23]For there is no augury in Jacob, neither is there any divination in Israel; according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What has God wrought!
[24]Behold, the people shall rise up as a lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down, till he eat of the prey, and till he drink the blood of the slain. [24]Behold, the people shall rise up as a lion and march like a lion; he shall not lie down until he eats the prey and drinks the blood of the slain.
[25]Then Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse, nor bless them at all. [25]Then Balak said to Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.
[26]But Balaam answered, and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the Lord speaketh, that must I do? [26]But Balaam answered and said to Balak, Did I not tell you. All that the LORD speaks to me, that very thing I must do?
[27]Again Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place, if so be it will please God, that thou mayest thence curse them for my sake. [27]And Balak said to Balaam, Come, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.
[28]So Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon. [28]Then Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that looks toward Ashimon.
[29]Then Balaam said unto Balak, Make me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks, and seven rams. [29]And Balaam said to Balak, Build me here seven altars and prepare me seven bullocks and seven rams.
[30]And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar. [30]And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar
