[1]שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלֹות לִשְׁלֹמֹה אִם־יְהוָה לֹא־יִבְנֶה בַיִת שָׁוְא עָמְלוּ בֹונָיו בֹּו אִם־יְהוָה לֹא־יִשְׁמָר־עִיר שָׁוְא שָׁקַד שֹׁומֵר׃ [1]Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the keeper watcheth in vain.
[2]שָׁוְא לָכֶם מַשְׁכִּימֵי קוּם מְאַחֲרֵי־שֶׁבֶת אֹכְלֵי לֶחֶם הָעֲצָבִים כֵּן יִתֵּן לִידִידֹו שֵׁנָא׃ [2]It is in vain for you to rise early , and to lie down late, and eat the bread of sorrow: but he will surely give rest to his beloved.
[3]הִנֵּה נַחֲלַת יְהוָה בָּנִים שָׂכָר פְּרִי הַבָּטֶן׃ [3]Behold, children are the inheritance of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb his reward.
[4]כְּחִצִּים בְּיַד־גִּבֹּור כֵּן בְּנֵי הַנְּעוּרִים׃ [4]As are the arrows in the hand of the strong man: so are the children of youth.
[5]אַשְׁרֵי הַגֶּבֶר אֲשֶׁר מִלֵּא אֶת־אַשְׁפָּתֹו מֵהֶם לֹא־יֵבֹשׁוּ כִּי־יְדַבְּרוּ אֶת־אֹויְבִים בַּשָּׁעַר׃ [5]Blessed is the man, that hath his quiver full of them: for they shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate.
