[[To him that excelleth.] A Psalm Chapter of David the servant of the Lord, which spake unto the Lord the words of this song (in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul) and said,]
[1]To the chief MusicianH5329[H8764], A Psalm of DavidH1732, the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068, who spakeH1696[H8765] unto the LORDH3068 the wordsH1697 of this songH7892 in the dayH3117 that the LORDH3068 deliveredH5337[H8689] him from the handH3709 of all his enemiesH341[H8802], and from the handH3027 of SaulH7586: And he saidH559[H8799], I will loveH7355[H8799] thee, O LORDH3068, my strengthH2391. [1]I will love thee dearly, O Lord my strength.
[2]The LORDH3068 is my rockH5553, and my fortressH4686, and my delivererH6403[H8764]; my GodH410, my strengthH6697, in whom I will trustH2620[H8799]; my bucklerH4043, and the hornH7161 of my salvationH3468, and my high towerH4869. [2]The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and he that delivereth me, my God and my strength: in him will I trust, my shield, the horn also of my salvation, and my refuge.
[3]I will callH7121[H8799] upon the LORDH3068, who is worthy to be praisedH1984[H8794]: so shall I be savedH3467[H8735] from mine enemiesH341.[H8802] [3]I will call upon the Lord, which is worthy to be praised: so shall I be safe from mine enemies.
[4]The sorrowsH2256 of deathH4194 compassedH661[H8804] me, and the floodsH5158 of ungodly menH1100 made me afraidH1204.[H8762] [4]The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of wickedness made me afraid.
[5]The sorrowsH2256 of hellH7585 compassed me aboutH5437[H8804]: the snaresH4170 of deathH4194 preventedH6923 meH8765. [5]The sorrows of the grave have compassed me about: the snares of death overtook me.
[6]In my distressH6862 I calledH7121[H8799] upon the LORDH3068, and criedH7768[H8762] unto my GodH430: he heardH8085[H8799] my voiceH6963 out of his templeH1964, and my cryH7775 cameH935[H8799] beforeH6440 him, even into his earsH241. [6]But in my trouble did I call upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry did come before him, even into his ears.
[7]Then the earthH776 shookH1607[H8799] and trembledH7493[H8799]; the foundationsH4146 also of the hillsH2022 movedH7264[H8799] and were shakenH1607[H8691], because he was wrothH2734.[H8804] [7]Then the earth trembled, and quaked: the foundations also of the mountains moved and shook, because he was angry.
[8]There went upH5927[H8804] a smokeH6227 out of his nostrilsH639, and fireH784 out of his mouthH6310 devouredH398[H8799]: coalsH1513 were kindledH1197 by itH8804. [8]Smoke went out at his nostrils, and a consuming fire out of his mouth: coals were kindled there at.
[9]He bowedH5186[H8799] the heavensH8064 also, and came downH3381[H8799]: and darknessH6205 was under his feetH7272. [9]He bowed the heavens also and came down, and darkness was under his feet.
[10]And he rodeH7392[H8799] upon a cherubH3742, and did flyH5774[H8799]: yea, he did flyH1675[H8799] upon the wingsH3671 of the windH7307. [10]And he rode upon cherub and did fly, and he came flying upon the wings of the wind.
[11]He madeH7896[H8799] darknessH2822 his secret placeH5643; his pavilionH5521 round aboutH5439 him were darkH2824 watersH4325 and thick cloudsH5645 of the skiesH7834. [11]He made darkness his secret place, and his pavilion round about him, even darkness of waters, and clouds of the air.
[12]At the brightnessH5051 that was before him his thick cloudsH5645 passedH5674[H8804], hailH1259 stones and coalsH1513 of fireH784. [12]At the brightness of his presence his clouds passed, hailstones and coals of fire.
[13]The LORDH3068 also thunderedH7481[H8686] in the heavensH8064, and the HighestH5945 gaveH5414[H8799] his voiceH6963; hailH1259 stones and coalsH1513 of fireH784. [13]The Lord also thundered in the heaven, and the Highest gave his voice, hailstones and coals of fire.
[14]Yea, he sent outH7971[H8799] his arrowsH2671, and scatteredH6327[H8686] them; and he shot outH7232[H8804] lightningsH1300, and discomfitedH2000 themH8799. [14]Then he sent out his arrows and scattered them, and he increased lightnings and destroyed them.
[15]Then the channelsH650 of watersH4325 were seenH7200[H8735], and the foundationsH4146 of the worldH8398 were discoveredH1540[H8735] at thy rebukeH1606, O LORDH3068, at the blastH5397 of the breathH7307 of thy nostrilsH639. [15]And the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuking, O Lord, at the blasting of the breath of thy nostrils.
[16]He sentH7971[H8799] from aboveH4791, he tookH3947[H8799] me, he drewH4871[H8686] me out of manyH7227 watersH4325. [16]He hath sent down from above and taken me: he hath drawn me out of many waters.
[17]He deliveredH5337[H8686] me from my strongH5794 enemyH341[H8802], and from them which hatedH8130[H8802] me: for they were too strongH553 for meH8804. [17]He hath delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hate me: for they were too strong for me.
[18]They preventedH6923[H8762] me in the dayH3117 of my calamityH343: but the LORDH3068 was my stayH4937. [18]They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay.
[19]He brought me forthH3318[H8686] also into a large placeH4800; he deliveredH2502[H8762] me, because he delightedH2654 in meH8804. [19]He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me because he favored me.
[20]The LORDH3068 rewardedH1580[H8799] me according to my righteousnessH6664; according to the cleannessH1252 of my handsH3027 hath he recompensedH7725 meH8686. [20]The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the pureness of mine hands he recompensed me:
[21]For I have keptH8104[H8804] the waysH1870 of the LORDH3068, and have not wickedly departedH7561[H8804] from my GodH430. [21]Because I kept the ways of the Lord, and did not wickedly against my God.
[22]For all his judgmentsH4941 were before me, and I did not put awayH5493[H8686] his statutes from meH2708. [22]For all his Laws were before me, and I did not cast away his commandments from me.
[23]I was also uprightH8549 before him, and I keptH8104[H8691] myself from mine iniquityH5771. [23]I was upright also with him, and have kept me from my wickedness.
[24]Therefore hath the LORDH3068 recompensedH7725[H8686] me according to my righteousnessH6664, according to the cleannessH1252 of my handsH3027 in his eyesightH5869. [24]Therefore the Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness, and according to the pureness of mine hands in his sight.
[25]With the mercifulH2623 thou wilt shew thyself mercifulH2616[H8691]; with an uprightH8549 manH1399 H8552thou wilt shew thyself uprightH8691 [25]With the godly thou wilt show thyself godly: with the upright man thou wilt show thyself upright.
[26]With the pureH1305[H8737] thou wilt shew thyself pureH1305[H8691]; and with the frowardH6141 thou wilt shew thyself frowardH6617.[H8691] [26]With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure, and with the froward thou wilt show thyself froward.
[27]For thou wilt saveH3467[H8686] the afflictedH6041 peopleH5971; but wilt bring downH8213[H8686] highH7311[H8802] looksH5869. [27]Thus thou wilt save the poor people, and wilt cast down the proud looks.
[28]For thou wilt lightH215[H8686] my candleH5216: the LORDH3068 my GodH430 will enlightenH5050[H8686] my darknessH2822. [28]Surely thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will lighten my darkness.
[29]For by thee I have run throughH7323[H8799] a troopH1416; and by my GodH430 have I leaped overH1801[H8762] a wallH7791. [29]For by thee I have broken through an host, and by my God I have leaped over a wall.
[30]As for GodH410, his wayH1870 is perfectH8549: the wordH565 of the LORDH3068 is triedH6884[H8803]: he is a bucklerH4043 to all those that trustH2620 in himH8802. [30]The way of God is uncorrupt: the word of the Lord is tried in the fire: he is a shield to all that trust in him.
[31]For who is GodH433 saveH1107 the LORDH3068? or who is a rockH6697 saveH2108 our GodH430? [31]For who is God besides the Lord? And who is mighty save our God?
[32]It is GodH410 that girdethH247[H8764] me with strengthH2428, and makethH5414[H8799] my wayH1870 perfectH8549. [32]God girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way upright.
[33]He makethH7737[H8764] my feetH7272 like hinds'H355 feet, and settethH5975[H8686] me upon my high placesH1116. [33]He maketh my feet like hinds feet, and setteth me upon mine high places.
[34]He teachethH3925[H8764] my handsH3027 to warH4421, so that a bowH7198 of steelH5154 is brokenH5181[H8765] by mine armsH2220. [34]He teacheth mine hands to fight: so that a bow of brass is broken with mine arms.
[35]Thou hast also givenH5414[H8799] me the shieldH4043 of thy salvationH3468: and thy right handH3225 hath holden me upH5582[H8799], and thy gentlenessH6037 hath made me greatH7235.[H8686] [35]Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation, and thy right hand hath stayed me, and thy loving kindness hath caused me to increase.
[36]Thou hast enlargedH7337[H8686] my stepsH6806 under me, that my feetH7166 did not slipH4571.[H8804] [36]Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, and mine heels have not slid.
[37]I have pursuedH7291[H8799] mine enemiesH341[H8802], and overtakenH5381[H8686] them: neither did I turn againH7725[H8799] till they were consumedH3615.[H8763] [37]I have pursued mine enemies, and taken them, and have not turned again till I had consumed them.
[38]I have woundedH4272[H8799] them that they were not ableH3201[H8799] to riseH6965[H8800]: they are fallenH5307[H8799] under my feetH7272. [38]I have wounded them, that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.
[39]For thou hast girdedH247[H8762] me with strengthH2428 unto the battleH4421: thou hast subduedH3766[H8686] under me those that rose upH6965 against meH8801. [39]For thou hast girded me with strength to battle them, that rose against me, thou hast subdued under me.
[40]Thou hast also givenH5414[H8804] me the necksH6203 of mine enemiesH341[H8802]; that I might destroyH6789[H8686] them that hateH8130 meH8764. [40]And thou hast given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
[41]They criedH7768[H8762], but there was none to saveH3467[H8688] them: even unto the LORDH3068, but he answeredH6030 them notH8804. [41]They cried but there was none to save them, even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.
[42]Then did I beatH7833[H8799] them small as the dustH6083 beforeH6440 the windH7307: I did cast them outH7324[H8686] as the dirtH2916 in the streetsH2351. [42]Then I did beat them small as the dust before the wind: I did tread them flat as the clay in the streets.
[43]Thou hast deliveredH6403[H8762] me from the strivingsH7379 of the peopleH5971; and thou hast madeH7760[H8799] me the headH7218 of the heathenH1471: a peopleH5971 whom I have not knownH3045[H8804] shall serveH5647 meH8799. [43]Thou hast delivered me from the contentions of the people: thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people, whom I have not known, shall serve me.
[44]As soon as they hearH8088[H241] of me, they shall obeyH8085[H8735] me: the strangersH1121[H5236] shall submitH3584 themselves unto meH8762. [44]As soon as they hear, they shall obey me: the strangers shall be in subjection to me.
[45]The strangersH1121[H5236] shall fade awayH5034[H8799], and be afraidH2727[H8799] out of their close placesH4526. [45]Strangers shall shrink away, and fear in their privy chambers.
[46]The LORDH3068 livethH2416; and blessedH1288[H8803] be my rockH6697; and let the GodH430 of my salvationH3468 be exaltedH7311.[H8799] [46]Let the Lord live, and blessed be my strength, and the God of my salvation be exalted.
[47]It is GodH410 that avengethH5414[H8802][H5360] me, and subduethH1696[H8686] the people under meH5971. [47]It is God that giveth me power to avenge me, and subdueth the people under me.
[48]He deliverethH6403[H8764] me from mine enemiesH341[H8802]: yea, thou liftest me upH7311[H8787] above those that rise upH6965[H8801] against me: thou hast deliveredH5337[H8686] me from the violentH2555 manH376. [48]O my deliverer from mine enemies, even thou hast set me up from them, that rose against me: thou hast delivered me from the cruel man.
[49]Therefore will I give thanksH3034[H8686] unto thee, O LORDH3068, among the heathenH1471, and sing praisesH2167[H8762] unto thy nameH8034. [49]Therefore I will praise thee, O Lord, among the nations, and will sing unto thy name.
[50]GreatH1431[H8688] deliveranceH3444 giveth he to his kingH4428; and shewethH6213[H8802] mercyH2617 to his anointedH4899, to DavidH1732, and to his seedH2233 forH5704 evermoreH5769. [50]Great deliverances giveth he unto his king, and showeth mercy to his anointed , even to David, and to his seed forever.
