The Bishops' Bible (1568)
Bishop
[1]Dare any one of you, having a matter with the other, go to be judged before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? [1]Dare any of you, hauing businesse with another, be iudged vnder the vniust, and not rather vnder ye saintes
[2]have ye not known that the saints shall judge the world? and if by you the world is judged, are ye unworthy of the smaller judgments? [2]Do ye not knowe that the saintes shall iudge the worlde? If the worlde shalbe iudged by you, are ye vnworthy to iudge the smallest matters
[3]have ye not known that we shall judge messengers? why not then the things of life? [3]Know ye not howe that we shal iudge the angels? Howe much more thinges that parteyne to this lyfe
[4]of the things of life, indeed, then, if ye may have judgment, those despised in the assembly -- these cause ye to sit; [4]If then ye haue iudgement of thinges parteynyng to this lyfe, set vp them to iudge whiche are least esteemed in the Churche
[5]unto your shame I speak: so there is not among you one wise man, not even one, who shall be able to discern in the midst of his brethren! [5]I speake it to your shame: Is it so that there is not a wyse man among you? no not one that can iudge betwene brother and brother
[6]but brother with brother doth go to be judged, and this before unbelievers! [6]But one brother goeth to law with another, and that vnder the vnbeleuers
[7]Already, indeed, then, there is altogether a fault among you, that ye have judgments with one another; wherefore do ye not rather suffer injustice? wherefore be ye not rather defrauded? [7]Nowe therefore there is vtterly a fault among you, because ye go to lawe one with another: Why rather suffer ye not wrong? why rather suffer ye not harme
[8]but ye -- ye do injustice, and ye defraud, and these -- brethren! [8]Nay, ye your selues do wrong, and do harme, and that to your brethren
[9]have ye not known that the unrighteous the reign of God shall not inherit? be not led astray; neither whoremongers, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor sodomites, [9]Knowe ye not that the vnrighteous shall not inherite the kingdome of God? Be not deceaued: neither fornicatours, nor idolatours, nor adulterers, nor weaklinges, nor abusers of them selues with mankinde
[10]nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, the reign of God shall inherit. [10]Nor theeues, nor couetous, nor drunckardes, nor cursed speakers, nor pyllers, shall inherite the kingdome of God
[11]And certain of you were these! but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were declared righteous, in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God. [11]And such were some of you: but ye are wasshed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are iustified in the name of the Lord Iesus, and by the spirite of our God
[12]All things are lawful to me, but all things are not profitable; all things are lawful to me, but I -- I will not be under authority by any; [12]All thinges are lawfull vnto me, but al thinges are not profitable: Al things are lawfull vnto me, but I will not be brought vnder the power of any
[13]the meats [are] for the belly, and the belly for the meats. And God both this and these shall make useless; and the body [is] not for whoredom, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body; [13]Meates [are ordeyned] for the belly, and the belly for meates: but God shall destroy both it, and them. Nowe the body [is] not for fornication: but for the Lorde, and the Lorde for the body
[14]and God both the Lord did raise, and us will raise up through His power. [14]And God both hath raysed vp the Lorde, and also shall rayse vs vp by his power
[15]Have ye not known that your bodies are members of Christ? having taken, then, the members of the Christ, shall I make [them] members of an harlot? let it be not! [15]Knowe ye not that your bodies are the members of Christe? Shall I then take the members of Christe, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbyd
[16]have ye not known that he who is joined to the harlot is one body? `for they shall be -- saith He -- the two for one flesh.' [16]Know ye not, that he whiche coupleth him selfe with an harlot, is one body? For two (sayth he) shalbe one fleshe
[17]And he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit; [17]But he that is ioyned vnto the Lord is one spirite
[18]flee the whoredom; every sin -- whatever a man may commit -- is without the body, and he who is committing whoredom, against his own body doth sin. [18]Flee fornication. Euery synne that a man doeth, is without the body: but he that committeth fornication, sinneth against his owne body
[19]Have ye not known that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in you, which ye have from God? and ye are not your own, [19]Knowe ye not that your body is the temple of the holy ghost [whiche is] in you, whom ye haue of God, and ye are not your owne
[20]for ye were bought with a price; glorify, then, God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. [20]For ye are dearely bought: therefore glorifie God in your body and in your spirite, which are Gods
