[1]And RehoboamH7346 wentH3212[H8799] to ShechemH7927: for all IsraelH3478 were comeH935[H8804] to ShechemH7927 to make him kingH4427.[H8687] [1]And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem, to make him king
[2]And it came to pass, when JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, who was yet in EgyptH4714, heardH8085[H8800] of it, (for he was fledH1272[H8804] from the presenceH6440 of kingH4428 SolomonH8010, and JeroboamH3379 dweltH3427[H8799] in EgyptH4714;) [2]And when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (who was yet in Egypt, whither Jeroboam had fled from king Solomon, and dwelt in Egypt)
[3]That they sentH7971[H8799] and calledH7121[H8799] him. And JeroboamH3379 and all the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478 cameH935[H8799], and spakeH1696[H8762] unto RehoboamH7346, sayingH559,[H8800] [3]Then they sent and called him: and Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
[4]Thy fatherH1 madeH7185 our yokeH5923 grievousH7185[H8689]: now therefore make thou the grievousH7186 serviceH5656 of thy fatherH1, and his heavyH3515 yokeH5923 which he putH5414[H8804] upon us, lighterH7043[H8685], and we will serveH5647 theeH8799. [4]Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous servitude of thy father, and his sore yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
[5]And he saidH559[H8799] unto them, DepartH3212[H8798] yet for threeH7969 daysH3117, then come againH7725[H8798] to me. And the peopleH5971 departedH3212.[H8799] [5]And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
[6]And kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 consultedH3289[H8735] with the old menH2205, that stoodH5975[H8802] beforeH6440 SolomonH8010 his fatherH1 while he yet livedH2416, and saidH559[H8800], How do ye adviseH3289[H8737] that I mayH7725[H8687] answerH1697 this peopleH5971? [6]And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stand before Solomon his father, while he yet lived, and said, What counsel give ye, that I may make an answer to this people?
[7]And they spakeH1696[H8762] unto him, sayingH559[H8800], If thou wilt be a servantH5650 unto this peopleH5971 this dayH3117, and wilt serveH5647[H8804] them, and answerH6030[H8804] them, and speakH1696[H8765] goodH2896 wordsH1697 to them, then they will be thy servantsH5650 for everH3117. [7]And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be a servant unto this people this day, and serve them, and answer them, and speak kind words to them, they will be thy servants forever.
[8]But he forsookH5800[H8799] the counselH6098 of the old menH2205, which they had givenH3289[H8804] him, and consultedH3289[H8735] with the young menH3206 that were grown upH1431[H8804] with him, and which stoodH5975[H8802] before himH6440: [8]But he forsook the counsel that the old men had given him, and asked counsel of the young men that had been brought up with him, and waited on him.
[9]And he saidH559[H8799] unto them, What counsel giveH3289[H8737] ye that we mayH7725[H8686] answerH1697 this peopleH5971, who have spokenH1696[H8765] to me, sayingH559[H8800], MakeH7043 the yokeH5923 which thy fatherH1 did putH5414[H8804] upon us lighterH7043?[H8685] [9]And he said unto them, What counsel give ye, that we may answer this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke, which thy father did put upon us, lighter?
[10]And the young menH3206 that were grown upH1431[H8804] with him spakeH1696[H8762] unto him, sayingH559[H8800], Thus shalt thou speakH559[H8799] unto this peopleH5971 that spakeH1696[H8765] unto thee, sayingH559[H8800], Thy fatherH1 madeH3513 our yokeH5923 heavyH3513[H8689], but make thou it lighterH7043[H8685] unto us; thus shalt thou sayH1696[H8762] unto them, My littleH6995 finger shall be thickerH5666[H8804] than my father'sH1 loinsH4975. [10]Then the young men that were brought up with him, spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto this people, that have spoken unto thee, and said, Thy father hath made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us: even thus shalt thou say unto them, My least part shall be bigger than my father's loins.
[11]And now whereas my fatherH1 did ladeH6006[H8689] you with a heavyH3515 yokeH5923, I will addH3254[H8686] to your yokeH5923: my fatherH1 hath chastisedH3256[H8765] you with whipsH7752, but I will chastiseH3256[H8762] you with scorpionsH6137. [11]Now where as my father did burden you with a grievous yoke, I will yet make your yoke heavier: my father hath chastised you with rods, but I will correct you with scourges.
[12]So JeroboamH3379 and all the peopleH5971 cameH935[H8799] to RehoboamH7346 the thirdH7992 dayH3117, as the kingH4428 had appointedH1696[H8765], sayingH559[H8800], Come to me againH7725[H8798] the thirdH7992 dayH3117. [12]Then Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
[13]And the kingH4428 answeredH6030[H8799] the peopleH5971 roughlyH7186, and forsookH5800[H8799] the old men'sH2205 counselH6098 that they gaveH3289 himH8804; [13]And the king answered the people sharply, and left the old men's counsel that they gave him,
[14]And spakeH1696[H8762] to them after the counselH6098 of the young menH3206, sayingH559[H8800], My fatherH1 madeH3513 your yokeH5923 heavyH3513[H8689], and I will addH3254[H8686] to your yokeH5923: my fatherH1 also chastisedH3256[H8765] you with whipsH7752, but I will chastiseH3256[H8762] you with scorpionsH6137. [14]And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke grievous, and I will make your yoke more grievous: my father hath chastised you with rods, but I will correct you with scourges.
[15]Wherefore the kingH4428 hearkenedH8085[H8804] not unto the peopleH5971; for the causeH5438 was from the LORDH3068, that he might performH6965[H8687] his sayingH1697, which the LORDH3068 spakeH1696[H8765] byH3027 AhijahH281 the ShiloniteH7888 unto JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028. [15]And the king hearkened not unto the people: for it was the ordinance of the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
[16]SoH7725[H8686] when all IsraelH3478 sawH7200[H8799] that the kingH4428 hearkenedH8085[H8804] not unto them, the peopleH5971 answeredH1697 the kingH4428, sayingH559[H8800], What portionH2506 have we in DavidH1732? neither have we inheritanceH5159 in the sonH1121 of JesseH3448: to your tentsH168, O IsraelH3478: now seeH7200[H8798] to thine own houseH1004, DavidH1732. So IsraelH3478 departedH3212[H8799] unto their tentsH168. [16]So when all Israel saw that the king regarded them not, the people answered the king thus, saying, What portion have we in David? We have none inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
[17]But as for the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 which dweltH3427[H8802] in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, RehoboamH7346 reignedH4427 over themH8799. [17]Howbeit over the children of Israel, which dwelt in the cities of Judah, did Rehoboam reign still.
[18]Then kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 sentH7971[H8799] AdoramH151, who was over the tributeH4522; and all IsraelH3478 stonedH7275[H8799] him with stonesH68, that he diedH4191[H8799]. Therefore kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 made speedH553[H8694] to get him upH5927[H8800] to his chariotH4818, to fleeH5127[H8800] to JerusalemH3389. [18]Now the king Rehoboam sent Adoram the receiver of the tribute, and all Israel stoned him to death: then king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
[19]So IsraelH3478 rebelledH6586[H8799] against the houseH1004 of DavidH1732 unto this dayH3117. [19]And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
[20]And it came to pass, when all IsraelH3478 heardH8085[H8800] that JeroboamH3379 was come againH7725[H8804], that they sentH7971[H8799] and calledH7121[H8799] him unto the congregationH5712, and made him kingH4427[H8686] over all IsraelH3478: there was none that followedH310 the houseH1004 of DavidH1732, butH2108 the tribeH7626 of Judah onlyH3063. [20]And when all Israel had heard that Jeroboam was come again, they sent and called him unto the assembly, and made him king over all Israel: none followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
[21]And when RehoboamH7346 was comeH935[H8799] to JerusalemH3389, he assembledH6950[H8686] all the houseH1004 of JudahH3063, with the tribeH7626 of BenjaminH1144, an hundredH3967 and fourscoreH8084 thousandH505 chosen menH977[H8803], which were warriorsH6213[H8802][H4421], to fightH3898[H8736] against the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, to bringH7725 the kingdomH4410 againH7725[H8687] to RehoboamH7346 the sonH1121 of SolomonH8010. [21]And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered all the house of Judah with the tribe of Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand of chosen men (which were good warriors) to fight against the house of Israel, and to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
[22]But the wordH1697 of GodH430 came unto ShemaiahH8098 the manH376 of GodH430, sayingH559,[H8800] [22]But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
[23]SpeakH559[H8798] unto RehoboamH7346, the sonH1121 of SolomonH8010, kingH4428 of JudahH3063, and unto all the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144, and to the remnantH3499 of the peopleH5971, sayingH559,[H8800] [23]Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the remnant of the people, saying,
[24]Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068, Ye shall not go upH5927[H8799], nor fightH3898[H8735] against your brethrenH251 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: returnH7725[H8798] every manH376 to his houseH1004; for this thingH1697 isH1961[H8738] from me. They hearkenedH8085[H8799] therefore to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, and returnedH7725[H8799] to departH3212[H8800], according to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068. [24]Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house: for this thing is done by me. They obeyed therefore the word of the Lord and returned, and departed, according to the word of the Lord.
[25]Then JeroboamH3379 builtH1129[H8799] ShechemH7927 in mountH2022 EphraimH669, and dweltH3427[H8799] therein; and went outH3318[H8799] from thence, and builtH1129[H8799] PenuelH6439. [25]Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein, and went from thence, and built Penuel.
[26]And JeroboamH3379 saidH559[H8799] in his heartH3820, Now shall the kingdomH4467 returnH7725[H8799] to the houseH1004 of DavidH1732: [26]And Jeroboam thought in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David.
[27]If this peopleH5971 go upH5927[H8799] to doH6213[H8800] sacrificeH2077 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 at JerusalemH3389, then shall the heartH3820 of this peopleH5971 turn againH7725[H8804] unto their lordH113, even unto RehoboamH7346 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, and they shall killH2026[H8804] me, and go againH7725[H8804] to RehoboamH7346 kingH4428 of JudahH3063. [27]If this people go up and do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah: so shall they kill me and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
[28]Whereupon the kingH4428 took counselH3289[H8735], and madeH6213[H8799] twoH8147 calvesH5695 of goldH2091, and saidH559[H8799] unto them, It is too muchH7227 for you to go upH5927[H8800] to JerusalemH3389: behold thy godsH430, O IsraelH3478, which brought thee upH5927[H8689] out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714. [28]Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold, O Israel, thy gods, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
[29]And he setH7760[H8799] the oneH259 in BethelH1008, and the otherH259 putH5414[H8804] he in DanH1835. [29]And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other set he in Dan.
[30]And this thingH1697 became a sinH2403: for the peopleH5971 wentH3212[H8799] to worship beforeH6440 the oneH259, even unto DanH1835. [30]And this thing turned to sin: for the people went (because of the one) even to Dan.
[31]And he madeH6213[H8799] an houseH1004 of high placesH1116, and madeH6213[H8799] priestsH3548 of the lowestH7098 of the peopleH5971, which were not of the sonsH1121 of LeviH3878. [31]Also he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
[32]And JeroboamH3379 ordainedH6213[H8799] a feastH2282 in the eighthH8066 monthH2320, on the fifteenthH2568[H6240] dayH3117 of the monthH2320, like unto the feastH2282 that is in JudahH3063, and he offeredH5927[H8686] upon the altarH4196. So didH6213[H8804] he in BethelH1008, sacrificingH2076[H8763] unto the calvesH5695 that he had madeH6213[H8804]: and he placedH5975[H8689] in BethelH1008 the priestsH3548 of the high placesH1116 which he had madeH6213.[H8804] [32]And Jeroboam made a feast the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and offered on the altar. So did he in Beth-el and offered unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places, which he had made.
[33]So he offeredH5927[H8686] upon the altarH4196 which he had madeH6213[H8804] in BethelH1008 the fifteenthH2568[H6240] dayH3117 of the eighthH8066 monthH2320, even in the monthH2320 which he had devisedH908[H8804] of his own heartH3820; and ordainedH6213[H8799] a feastH2282 unto the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: and he offeredH5927[H8686] upon the altarH4196, and burnt incenseH6999.[H8687] [33]And he offered upon the altar, which he had made in Beth-el, the fifteenth day of the eighth month, ( even in the month which he had forged of his own heart) and made a solemn feast unto the children of Israel: and he went up to the altar, to burn incense.
