[1]πρεσβυτερους τους εν υμιν παρακαλω ο συμπρεσβυτερος και μαρτυς των του χριστου παθηματων ο και της μελλουσης αποκαλυπτεσθαι δοξης κοινωνος [1]I EXHORT the ministers who are among you, for I also am a minister and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed.
[2]ποιμανατε το εν υμιν ποιμνιον του θεου επισκοπουντες μη αναγκαστως αλλ εκουσιως μηδε αισχροκερδως αλλα προθυμως [2]Feed the flock of God which is entrusted to your care and shepherd them spiritually, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but with all your heart.
[3]μηδε ως κατακυριευοντες των κληρων αλλα τυποι γινομενοι του ποιμνιου [3]Live not as overlords over the flock, but as good examples to them.
[4]και φανερωθεντος του αρχιποιμενος κομιεισθε τον αμαραντινον της δοξης στεφανον [4]And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that will not fade away.
[5]ομοιως νεωτεροι υποταγητε πρεσβυτεροις παντες δε αλληλοις υποτασσομενοι την ταπεινοφροσυνην εγκομβωσασθε οτι ο θεος υπερηφανοις αντιτασσεται ταπεινοις δε διδωσιν χαριν [5]And you too, young people, submit yourselves to your elders; and clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.
[6]ταπεινωθητε ουν υπο την κραταιαν χειρα του θεου ινα υμας υψωση εν καιρω [6]Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
[7]πασαν την μεριμναν υμων επιρριψαντες επ αυτον οτι αυτω μελει περι υμων [7]Casting all your cares upon God; for he cares for you.
[8]νηψατε γρηγορησατε ο αντιδικος υμων διαβολος ως λεων ωρυομενος περιπατει ζητων τινα καταπιη [8]Be vigilant, and be cautious; because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:
[9]ω αντιστητε στερεοι τη πιστει ειδοτες τα αυτα των παθηματων τη εν κοσμω υμων αδελφοτητι επιτελεισθαι [9]Rise up, therefore, against him, as you are steadfast in the faith, knowing that your brethren who are in the world also suffered these same afflictions.
[10]ο δε θεος πασης χαριτος ο καλεσας υμας εις την αιωνιον αυτου δοξαν εν χριστω ιησου ολιγον παθοντας αυτος καταρτισαι υμας στηριξει σθενωσει θεμελιωσει [10]But the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, whom God has given to us; will strengthen us to endure these little afflictions that we may be made steadfast and remain in him for ever.
[11]αυτω η δοξα και το κρατος εις τους αιωνας των αιωνων αμην [11]To him be glory and dominion and honour for ever and ever. Amen.
[12]δια σιλουανου υμιν του πιστου αδελφου ως λογιζομαι δι ολιγων εγραψα παρακαλων και επιμαρτυρων ταυτην ειναι αληθη χαριν του θεου εις ην εστηκατε [12]By Sil-va'nus, a faithful brother, I have written you these things briefly according to my opinion, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein you stand.
[13]ασπαζεται υμας η εν βαβυλωνι συνεκλεκτη και μαρκος ο υιος μου [13]The chosen church which is at Bab'ylon, and Mark, my son, salutes you.
[14]ασπασασθε αλληλους εν φιληματι αγαπης ειρηνη υμιν πασιν τοις εν χριστω ιησου αμην [14]Greet one another with a holy kiss. Peace be with you all who are in Christ. Amen.
