[1]Samuel then said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have appointed a king over you.
[2]And now, behold, the kingH4428 walkethH1980[H8693] beforeH6440 you: and I am oldH2204[H8804] and grayheadedH7867[H8804]; and, behold, my sonsH1121 are with you: and I have walkedH1980[H8694] beforeH6440 you from my childhoodH5271 unto this dayH3117. [2]Now therefore behold , your king walketh before you, and I am old and gray headed, and behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.
[3]Behold, here I am: witnessH6030[H8798] against me before the LORDH3068, and before his anointedH4899: whose oxH7794 have I takenH3947[H8804]? or whose assH2543 have I takenH3947[H8804]? or whom have I defraudedH6231[H8804]? whom have I oppressedH7533[H8804]? or of whose handH3027 have I received any bribeH3724 to blindH5956[H8686] mine eyesH5869 therewith? and I will restoreH7725 it youH8686. [3]Behold, here I am: bear record of me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose ass have I taken? Or whom have I done wrong to? Or whom have I hurt? Or of whose hand have I received any bribe, to blind mine eyes therewith, and I will restore it you?
[4]And they saidH559[H8799], Thou hast not defraudedH6231[H8804] us, nor oppressedH7533[H8804] us, neither hast thou takenH3947[H8804] oughtH3972 of any man'sH376 handH3027. [4]Then they said, Thou hast done us no wrong, nor hast hurt us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.
[5]And he saidH559[H8799] unto them, The LORDH3068 is witnessH5707 against you, and his anointedH4899 is witnessH5707 this dayH3117, that ye have not foundH4672[H8804] oughtH3972 in my handH3027. And they answeredH559[H8799], He is witnessH5707. [5]And he said unto them, The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have found naught in mine hands. And they answered, He is witness.
[6]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799] unto the peopleH5971, It is the LORDH3068 that advancedH6213[H8804] MosesH4872 and AaronH175, and that broughtH5927 your fathersH1 upH5927[H8689] out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714. [6]Then Samuel said unto the people, It is the Lord that made Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt.
[7]Now therefore stand stillH3320[H8690], that I may reasonH8199[H8735] with you beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 of all the righteous actsH6666 of the LORDH3068, which he didH6213[H8804] to you and to your fathersH1. [7]Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord according to all the righteousness of the Lord, which he showed to you and to your fathers.
[8]When JacobH3290 was comeH935[H8804] into EgyptH4714, and your fathersH1 criedH2199[H8799] unto the LORDH3068, then the LORDH3068 sentH7971[H8799] MosesH4872 and AaronH175, which brought forthH3318[H8686] your fathersH1 out of EgyptH4714, and made them dwellH3427[H8686] in this placeH4725. [8]After that Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron which brought your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.
[9]And when they forgatH7911[H8799] the LORDH3068 their GodH430, he soldH4376[H8799] them into the handH3027 of SiseraH5516, captainH8269 of the hostH6635 of HazorH2674, and into the handH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430, and into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of MoabH4124, and they foughtH3898 against themH8735. [9]And when they forgot the Lord their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera captain of the host of Hazor and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
[10]And they criedH2199[H8799] unto the LORDH3068, and saidH559[H8799], We have sinnedH2398[H8804], because we have forsakenH5800[H8804] the LORDH3068, and have servedH5647[H8799] BaalimH1168 and AshtarothH6252: but now deliverH5337[H8685] us out of the handH3027 of our enemiesH341[H8802], and we will serveH5647 theeH8799. [10]And they cried unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth. Now therefore deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
[11]And the LORDH3068 sentH7971[H8799] JerubbaalH3378, and BedanH917, and JephthahH3316, and SamuelH8050, and deliveredH5337[H8686] you out of the handH3027 of your enemiesH341[H8802] on every sideH5439, and ye dwelledH3427[H8799] safeH983. [11]Therefore the Lord sent Jerubbaal and Bedan and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hands of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
[12]And when ye sawH7200[H8799] that NahashH5176 the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 cameH935[H8804] against you, ye saidH559[H8799] unto me, Nay; but a kingH4428 shall reignH4427[H8799] over us: when the LORDH3068 your GodH430 was your kingH4428. [12]Notwithstanding when you saw, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, No, but a king shall reign over us: when yet the Lord your God was your king.
[13]Now therefore behold the kingH4428 whom ye have chosenH977[H8804], and whom ye have desiredH7592[H8804]! and, behold, the LORDH3068 hath setH5414[H8804] a king over youH4428. [13]Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired: lo therefore, the Lord hath set a king over you.
[14]If ye will fearH3372[H8799] the LORDH3068, and serveH5647[H8804] him, and obeyH8085[H8804] his voiceH6963, and not rebelH4784[H8686] against the commandmentH6310 of the LORDH3068, then shall both ye and also the kingH4428 that reignethH4427[H8804] over you continue followingH310 the LORDH3068 your GodH430: [14]If ye will fear the Lord and serve him, and hear his voice, and not disobey the word of the Lord, both ye, and the king that reigneth over you, shall follow the Lord your God.
[15]But if ye will not obeyH8085[H8799] the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068, but rebelH4784[H8804] against the commandmentH6310 of the LORDH3068, then shall the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 be against you, as it was against your fathersH1. [15]But if ye will not obey the voice of the Lord, but disobey the Lord's mouth, then shall the hand of the Lord be upon you, and on your fathers.
[16]Now thereforeH1571 standH3320[H8690] and seeH7200[H8798] this greatH1419 thingH1697, which the LORDH3068 will doH6213[H8802] before your eyesH5869. [16]Now also stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes.
[17]Is it not wheatH2406 harvestH7105 to dayH3117? I will callH7121[H8799] unto the LORDH3068, and he shall sendH5414[H8799] thunderH6963 and rainH4306; that ye may perceiveH3045[H8798] and seeH7200[H8798] that your wickednessH7451 is greatH7227, which ye have doneH6213[H8804] in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068, in askingH7592[H8800] you a kingH4428. [17]Is it not now wheat harvest? I will call unto the Lord, and he shall send thunder and rain, that ye may perceive and see, how that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the Lord in asking you a king.
[18]So SamuelH8050 calledH7121[H8799] unto the LORDH3068; and the LORDH3068 sentH5414[H8799] thunderH6963 and rainH4306 that dayH3117: and all the peopleH5971 greatlyH3966 fearedH3372[H8799] the LORDH3068 and SamuelH8050. [18]Then Samuel called unto the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain the same day: and all the people feared the Lord and Samuel exceedingly.
[19]And all the peopleH5971 saidH559[H8799] unto SamuelH8050, PrayH6419[H8690] for thy servantsH5650 unto the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, that we dieH4191[H8799] not: for we have addedH3254[H8804] unto all our sinsH2403 this evilH7451, to askH7592[H8800] us a kingH4428. [19]And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the Lord thy God, that we die not: for we have sinned in asking us a king, beside all our other sins.
[20]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799] unto the peopleH5971, FearH3372[H8799] not: ye have doneH6213[H8804] all this wickednessH7451: yet turn not asideH5493[H8799] from followingH310 the LORDH3068, but serveH5647[H8804] the LORDH3068 with all your heartH3824; [20]And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not. (ye have indeed done all this wickedness, yet depart not from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart,
[21]And turn ye not asideH5493[H8799]: for then should ye go afterH310 vainH8414 things, which cannot profitH3276[H8686] nor deliverH5337[H8686]; for they are vainH8414. [21]Neither turn ye back: for that should be after vain things which cannot profit you, nor deliver you, for they are but vanity)
[22]For the LORDH3068 will not forsakeH5203[H8799] his peopleH5971 for his greatH1419 name'sH8034 sake: because it hath pleasedH2974[H8689] the LORDH3068 to makeH6213[H8800] you his peopleH5971. [22]For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.
[23]Moreover as for meH595, God forbidH2486 that I should sinH2398[H8800] against the LORDH3068 in ceasingH2308[H8800] to prayH6419[H8692] for you: but I will teachH3384[H8689] you the goodH2896 and the rightH3477 wayH1870: [23]Moreover God forbid, that I should sin against the Lord, and cease praying for you, but I will sh0w you the good and right way.
[24]Only fearH3372[H8798] the LORDH3068, and serveH5647[H8804] him in truthH571 with all your heartH3824: for considerH7200[H8798] how great things he hath doneH1431 for youH8689. [24]Therefore fear you the Lord, and serve him in the truth with all your hearts, and consider how great things he hath done for you.
[25]But if ye shall stillH7489[H8687] do wickedlyH7489[H8686], ye shall be consumedH5595[H8735], both ye and your kingH4428. [25]But if ye do wickedly, ye shall perish, both ye, and your king.
