[1]Afterward Samuel said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee king over his people over Israel: now therefore obey the voice of the words of the Lord. |
| [2]Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635, I rememberH6485[H8804] that which AmalekH6002 didH6213[H8804] to IsraelH3478, how he laidH7760[H8804] wait for him in the wayH1870, when he came upH5927[H8800] from EgyptH4714. |
[2]Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how they laid wait for them in the way, as they came up from Egypt. |
| [3]Now goH3212[H8798] and smiteH5221[H8689] AmalekH6002, and utterly destroyH2763[H8689] all that they have, and spareH2550[H8799] them not; but slayH4191[H8689] both manH376 and womanH802, infantH5768 and sucklingH3243[H8802], oxH7794 and sheepH7716, camelH1581 and assH2543. |
[3]Now therefore go, and smite Amalek, and destroy ye all that pertaineth unto them, and have no compassion on them, but slay both man and woman, both infant and suckling, both ox, and sheep, both camel, and ass. |
| [4]And SaulH7586 gatheredH8085 the peopleH5971 togetherH8085[H8762], and numberedH6485[H8799] them in TelaimH2923, two hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmenH7273, and tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376 of JudahH3063. |
[4]And Saul assembled the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. |
| [5]And SaulH7586 cameH935[H8799] to a cityH5892 of AmalekH6002, and laid waitH7378[H8799][H693][H8686] in the valleyH5158. |
[5]And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and set watch at the river. |
| [6]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] unto the KenitesH7017, GoH3212[H8798], departH5493[H8798], get you downH3381[H8798] from amongH8432 the AmalekitesH6002, lest I destroyH622[H8799] you with them: for ye shewedH6213[H8804] kindnessH2617 to all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, when they came upH5927[H8800] out of EgyptH4714. So the KenitesH7017 departedH5493[H8799] from amongH8432 the AmalekitesH6003. |
[6]And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, and get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye showed mercy to all the children of Israel, when they came up from Egypt: and the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. |
| [7]And SaulH7586 smoteH5221[H8686] the AmalekitesH6002 from HavilahH2341 until thou comestH935[H8800] to ShurH7793, that is over againstH6440 EgyptH4714. |
[7]So Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah as thou comest to Shur, that is before Egypt, |
| [8]And he tookH8610[H8799] AgagH90 the kingH4428 of the AmalekitesH6002 aliveH2416, and utterly destroyedH2763[H8689] all the peopleH5971 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719. |
[8]And took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. |
| [9]But SaulH7586 and the peopleH5971 sparedH2550[H8799] AgagH90, and the bestH4315 of the sheepH6629, and of the oxenH1241, and of the fatlingsH4932, and the lambsH3733, and all that was goodH2896, and wouldH14[H8804] not utterly destroyH2763[H8687] them: but every thingH4399 that was vileH5240 and refuseH4549[H8738], that they destroyed utterlyH2763.[H8689] |
[9]But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the better sheep, and the oxen, and the fat beasts, and the lambs, and all that was good, and they would not destroy them: but everything that was vile and nought worth, that they destroyed. |
| [10]Then came the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 unto SamuelH8050, sayingH559,[H8800] |
[10]Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying, |
| [11]It repentethH5162[H8738] me that I have set upH4427[H8689] SaulH7586 to be kingH4428: for he is turned backH7725[H8804] from followingH310 me, and hath not performedH6965[H8689] my commandmentsH1697. And it grievedH2734[H8799] SamuelH8050; and he criedH2199[H8799] unto the LORDH3068 all nightH3915. |
[11]It repenteth me that I have made Saul king: for he is turned from me, and hath not performed my commandments. And Samuel was moved, and cried unto the Lord all night. |
| [12]And when SamuelH8050 rose earlyH7925[H8686] to meetH7125[H8800] SaulH7586 in the morningH1242, it was toldH5046[H8714] SamuelH8050, sayingH559[H8800], SaulH7586 cameH935[H8804] to CarmelH3760, and, behold, he set him upH5324[H8688] a placeH3027, and is gone aboutH5437[H8735], and passed onH5674[H8799], and gone downH3381[H8799] to GilgalH1537. |
[12]And when Samuel arose early to meet Saul in the morning, one told Samuel, saying, Saul is gone to Carmel: and behold, he hath made him there a place, from whence he returned, and departed, and is gone down to Gilgal. |
| [13]And SamuelH8050 cameH935[H8799] to SaulH7586: and SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] unto him, BlessedH1288[H8803] be thou of the LORDH3068: I have performedH6965[H8689] the commandmentH1697 of the LORDH3068. |
[13]Then Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said unto him. Blessed be thou of the Lord, I have fulfilled the commandment of the Lord. |
| [14]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799], What meaneth then this bleatingH6963 of the sheepH6629 in mine earsH241, and the lowingH6963 of the oxenH1241 which I hearH8085?[H8802] |
[14]But Samuel said, What meaneth then the bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? |
| [15]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799], They have broughtH935[H8689] them from the AmalekitesH6003: for the peopleH5971 sparedH2550[H8804] the bestH4315 of the sheepH6629 and of the oxenH1241, to sacrificeH2076[H8800] unto the LORDH3068 thy GodH430; and the restH3498[H8802] we have utterly destroyedH2763.[H8689] |
[15]And Saul answered, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep, and of the oxen to sacrifice them unto the Lord thy God, and the remnant have we destroyed. |
| [16]Then SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799] unto SaulH7586, StayH7503[H8685], and I will tellH5046[H8686] thee what the LORDH3068 hath saidH1696[H8765] to me this nightH3915. And he saidH559[H8799] unto him, Say onH1696.[H8761] |
[16]Again Samuel said to Saul, Let me tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. |
| [17]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799], When thou wast littleH6996 in thine own sightH5869, wast thou not made the headH7218 of the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, and the LORDH3068 anointedH4886[H8799] thee kingH4428 over IsraelH3478? |
[17]Then Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? For the Lord anointed thee king over Israel. |
| [18]And the LORDH3068 sentH7971[H8799] thee on a journeyH1870, and saidH559[H8799], GoH3212[H8798] and utterly destroyH2763[H8689] the sinnersH2400 the AmalekitesH6002, and fightH3898[H8738] against them until they be consumedH3615.[H8763] |
[18]And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and destroy those sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them, until thou destroy them. |
| [19]Wherefore then didst thou not obeyH8085[H8804] the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068, but didst flyH5860[H8799] upon the spoilH7998, and didstH6213[H8799] evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068? |
[19]Now wherefore hast thou not obeyed the voice of the Lord, but hast turned to the prey, and hast done wickedly in the sight of the Lord? |
| [20]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] unto SamuelH8050, Yea, I have obeyedH8085[H8804] the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068, and have goneH3212[H8799] the wayH1870 which the LORDH3068 sentH7971[H8804] me, and have broughtH935[H8686] AgagH90 the kingH4428 of AmalekH6002, and have utterly destroyedH2763[H8689] the AmalekitesH6002. |
[20]And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have destroyed the Amalekites. |
| [21]But the peopleH5971 tookH3947[H8799] of the spoilH7998, sheepH6629 and oxenH1241, the chiefH7225 of the things which should have been utterly destroyedH2764, to sacrificeH2076[H8800] unto the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 in GilgalH1537. |
[21]But the people took of the spoil, sheep, and oxen, and the chiefest of the things which should have been destroyed, to offer unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal. |
| [22]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799], Hath the LORDH3068 as great delightH2656 in burnt offeringsH5930 and sacrificesH2077, as in obeyingH8085[H8800] the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068? Behold, to obeyH8085[H8800] is betterH2896 than sacrificeH2077, and to hearkenH7181[H8687] than the fatH2459 of ramsH352. |
[22]And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as when the voice of the Lord is obeyed? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken is better than the fat of rams. |
| [23]For rebellionH4805 is as the sinH2403 of witchcraftH7081, and stubbornnessH6484[H8687] is as iniquityH205 and idolatryH8655. Because thou hast rejectedH3988[H8804] the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, he hath also rejectedH3988[H8799] thee from being kingH4428. |
[23]For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and transgression is wickedness and idolatry. Because thou hast cast away the word of the Lord, therefore he hath cast away thee from being king. |
| [24]And SaulH7586 saidH559[H8799] unto SamuelH8050, I have sinnedH2398[H8804]: for I have transgressedH5674[H8804] the commandmentH6310 of the LORDH3068, and thy wordsH1697: because I fearedH3372[H8804] the peopleH5971, and obeyedH8085[H8799] their voiceH6963. |
[24]Then Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. |
| [25]Now therefore, I pray thee, pardonH5375[H8798] my sinH2403, and turn againH7725[H8798] with me, that I may worshipH7812[H8691] the LORDH3068. |
[25]Now therefore I pray thee, take away my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord. |
| [26]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799] unto SaulH7586, I will not returnH7725[H8799] with thee: for thou hast rejectedH3988[H8804] the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, and the LORDH3068 hath rejectedH3988[H8799] thee from being kingH4428 over IsraelH3478. |
[26]But Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast cast away the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath cast away thee, that thou shalt not be king over Israel. |
| [27]And as SamuelH8050 turned aboutH5437[H8735] to go awayH3212[H8800], he laid holdH2388[H8686] upon the skirtH3671 of his mantleH4598, and it rentH7167.[H8735] |
[27]And as Samuel turned himself to go away, he caught the lap of his coat, and it rent. |
| [28]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799] unto him, The LORDH3068 hath rentH7167[H8804] the kingdomH4468 of IsraelH3478 from thee this dayH3117, and hath givenH5414[H8804] it to a neighbourH7453 of thine, that is better than thouH2896. |
[28]Then Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to thy neighbor, that is better than thou. |
| [29]And also the StrengthH5331 of IsraelH3478 will not lieH8266[H8762] nor repentH5162[H8735]: for he is not a manH120, that he should repentH5162.[H8736] |
[29]For indeed the strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man that he should repent. |
| [30]Then he saidH559[H8799], I have sinnedH2398[H8804]: yet honourH3513[H8761] me now, I pray thee, before the eldersH2205 of my peopleH5971, and before IsraelH3478, and turn againH7725[H8798] with me, that I may worshipH7812[H8694] the LORDH3068 thy GodH430. |
[30]Then he said, I have sinned: but honor me, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God. |
| [31]So SamuelH8050 turned againH7725[H8799] afterH310 SaulH7586; and SaulH7586 worshippedH7812[H8691] the LORDH3068. |
[31]So Samuel turned again, and followed Saul: and Saul worshiped the Lord. |
| [32]Then saidH559[H8799] SamuelH8050, Bring ye hitherH5066[H8685] to me AgagH90 the kingH4428 of the AmalekitesH6002. And AgagH90 cameH3212[H8799] unto him delicatelyH4574. And AgagH90 saidH559[H8799], SurelyH403 the bitternessH4751 of deathH4194 is pastH5493.[H8804] |
[32]Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites: and Agag came unto him pleasantly, and Agag said, Truly the bitterness of death is passed. |
| [33]And SamuelH8050 saidH559[H8799], As thy swordH2719 hath made womenH802 childlessH7921[H8765], so shall thy motherH517 be childlessH7921[H8799] among womenH802. And SamuelH8050 hewedH8158 AgagH90 in piecesH8158[H8762] beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 in GilgalH1537. |
[33]And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among other women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal. |
| [34]Then SamuelH8050 wentH3212[H8799] to RamahH7414; and SaulH7586 went upH5927[H8804] to his houseH1004 to GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586. |
[34]So Samuel departed to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. |
| [35]And SamuelH8050 came no moreH3254[H8804] to seeH7200[H8800] SaulH7586 until the dayH3117 of his deathH4194: neverthelessH3588 SamuelH8050 mournedH56[H8694] for SaulH7586: and the LORDH3068 repentedH5162[H8738] that he had made SaulH7586 kingH4427[H8689] over IsraelH3478. |
[35]And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: but Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord repented that he made Saul king over Israel. |
