[1]Now the PhilistinesH6430 foughtH3898[H8737] against IsraelH3478: and the menH582 of IsraelH3478 fledH5127[H8799] from beforeH6440 the PhilistinesH6430, and fell downH5307[H8799] slainH2491 in mountH2022 GilboaH1533. [1]Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled away from the Philistines, and they fell down wounded in mount Gilboa.
[2]And the PhilistinesH6430 followed hardH1692[H8686] upon SaulH7586 and upon his sonsH1121; and the PhilistinesH6430 slewH5221[H8686] JonathanH3083, and AbinadabH41, and MalchishuaH4444, Saul'sH7586 sonsH1121. [2]And the Philistines pressed sore upon Saul and his sons, and slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua Saul's sons.
[3]And the battleH4421 went soreH3513[H8799] against SaulH7586, and the archersH3384[H8688][H582][H7198] hitH4672[H8799] him; and he was soreH3966 woundedH2342[H8799] of the archersH3384[H8688][H582].[H7198] [3]And when the battle went sore against Saul, the archers and bowmen hit him, and he was sore wounded of the archers.
[4]Then saidH559[H8799] SaulH7586 unto his armourbearerH5375[H8802][H3627], DrawH8025[H8798] thy swordH2719, and thrust me throughH1856[H8798] therewith; lest these uncircumcisedH6189 comeH935[H8799] and thrust me throughH1856[H8804], and abuseH5953[H8694] me. [4]Then said Saul unto his armor bearer, Draw out thy sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest the uncircumcised come and thrust me through and mock me: but his armor bearer would not, for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell upon it.
[5]And when his armourbearerH5375[H8802][H3627] sawH7200[H8799] that SaulH7586 was deadH4191[H8804], he fellH5307[H8799] likewise upon his swordH2719, and diedH4191 with himH8799. [5]And when his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
[6]So SaulH7586 diedH4191[H8799], and his threeH7969 sonsH1121, and his armourbearerH5375[H8802][H3627], and all his menH582, that same dayH3117 togetherH3162. [6]So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men that same day together.
[7]And when the menH582 of IsraelH3478 that were on the other sideH5676 of the valleyH6010, and they that were on the other sideH5676 JordanH3383, sawH7200[H8799] that the menH582 of IsraelH3478 fledH5127[H8804], and that SaulH7586 and his sonsH1121 were deadH4191[H8804], they forsookH5800[H8799] the citiesH5892, and fledH5127[H8799]; and the PhilistinesH6430 cameH935[H8799] and dweltH3427 in themH8799. [7]And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they of the other side Jordan saw that the men of Israel were put to flight, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they left the cities, and ran away: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
[8]And it came to pass on the morrowH4283, when the PhilistinesH6430 cameH935[H8799] to stripH6584[H8763] the slainH2491, that they foundH4672[H8799] SaulH7586 and his threeH7969 sonsH1121 fallenH5307[H8802] in mountH2022 GilboaH1533. [8]And on the morrow when the Philistines were come to spoil them that were slain, they found Saul and his three sons lying in mount Gilboa,
[9]And they cut offH3772[H8799] his headH7218, and stripped offH6584[H8686] his armourH3627, and sentH7971[H8762] into the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430 round aboutH5439, to publishH1319[H8763] it in the houseH1004 of their idolsH6091, and among the peopleH5971. [9]And they cut off his head, and stripped him out of his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines on every side, that they should publish it in the temple of their idols, and among the people.
[10]And they putH7760[H8799] his armourH3627 in the houseH1004 of AshtarothH6252[H8677][H1045]: and they fastenedH8628[H8804] his bodyH1472 to the wallH2346 of BethshanH1052. [10]And they laid up his armor in the house of Ashtaroth, but they hanged up his body on the wall of Beth-shan.
[11]And when the inhabitantsH3427[H8802] of JabeshgileadH3003[H1568] heardH8085[H8799] of that which the PhilistinesH6430 had doneH6213[H8804] to SaulH7586; [11]When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard, what the Philistines had done to Saul,
[12]All the valiantH2428 menH376[H8677][H381] aroseH6965[H8799], and wentH3212[H8799] all nightH3915, and tookH3947[H8799] the bodyH1472 of SaulH7586 and the bodiesH1472 of his sonsH1121 from the wallH2346 of BethshanH1052, and cameH935[H8799] to JabeshH3003, and burntH8313 them thereH8799. [12]Then they arose (as many as were strong men) and went all night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burned them there,
[13]And they tookH3947[H8799] their bonesH6106, and buriedH6912[H8799] them under a treeH815 at JabeshH3003, and fastedH6684[H8799] sevenH7651 daysH3117. [13]And took their bones and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
