Peshitta (Lamsa, 1933)
Pes(Lam)
[1]After these things faithfully described, Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria] came and entered into Judah, and besieged the strong cities, and thought to win them for himself. [1]AFTER these things and the faithful acts which Hezekiah did, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, and said to their inhabitants, Give me a pledge and come to me.
[2]When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that his purpose was to fight against Jerusalem, [2]And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib king of Assyria and his armies had come to fight against Jerusalem,
[3]Then he took counsel with his princes and his nobles, to stop the water of the fountains without the city: and they did help him. [3]He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to conceal the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they did help him.
[4]So many of the people assembled themselves, and stopped all the fountains, and the river that ran through the midst of the country, saying, Why should the kings of Asshur [Assyria] come, and find much water? [4]So there was gathered a great multitude of the people of Israel together, who concealed all the fountains and the great brooks that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come and find much water.
[5]And he took courage, and built all the broken wall, and made up the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made many darts and shields. [5]They also strengthened themselves and built up one wall opposite the other and polluted the canal which David had constructed. And Hezekiah made weapons, shields, and spears in abundance.
[6]And he set captains of war over the people, and assembled them to him in the broad place of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably unto them, saying, [6]And he set captains of war over the people, each one over ten, and gathered them together to him in the market place of the city, and spoke to all of them, saying.
[7]Be strong and courageous: fear not, neither be afraid for the king of Asshur [Assyria], neither for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us, than is with him. [7]Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed in the presence of the king of Assyria, nor in the presence of all the armies that have come with him; for there is more with us than with him:
[8]With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God for to help us, and to fight our battles. Then the people were confirmed by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. [8]With him is an arm of flesh; with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people were encouraged with the words of Hezekiah king of Judah
[9]After this, did Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria] send his servants to Jerusalem (while he was against Lachish, and all his dominion with him) unto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying, [9]After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent Rab-shakey together with his servants, and they came to Jerusalem (but he himself was besieging Lachish, and all his commanders with him) to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying,
[10]Thus saith Sennacherib the king of Asshur [Assyria], Wherein do ye trust, that ye will remain in Jerusalem, during the siege? [10]Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On whom are you trusting, that you remain in Jerusalem during the siege?
[11]Doth not Hezekiah entice you to give over yourselves unto death by famine and by thirst, saying, The Lord our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Asshur [Assyria]? [11]Hezekiah is deceiving you that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, and moreover he is misleading you, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hands of the king of Assyria.
[12]Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it? [12]Has not the same Hezekiah removed his high places and altars, and commanded Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before one altar and burn incense upon it?
[13]Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other countries? Were the gods of the nations of other lands able to deliver their land out of mine hand? [13]Perhaps you know what I and my fathers have done to all the people of other lands? And the gods of nations of those lands were not able to deliver their lands out of my hand.
[14]Who is he of all the gods of those nations (that my fathers have destroyed) that could deliver his people out of mine hand? That your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand? [14]Who is there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that the LORD should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
[15]Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor seduce you after this sort, neither believe ye him: for none of all the gods of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your gods deliver you out of mine hand? [15]Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you nor make you to trust in this, and do not believe him; for your God will not be able to deliver you out of my hand; for all nations and kingdoms have not been able to deliver their cities out of my hand, and out of the hands of my fathers; your God also will not be able to deliver you out of my hand.
[16]And his servants spake yet more against the Lord God, and against his servant Hezekiah. [16]And his servants spoke these things before the LORD God of Israel and in the presence of his servant Hezekiah.
[17]He wrote also letters, blaspheming the Lord God of Israel and speaking against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other countries could not deliver their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand. [17]And he wrote letters to revile the LORD God of Israel, and to speak to the people of Israel, saying, As the gods of the nations of these lands were unable to deliver their cities out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah be able to deliver his city out of my hand.
[18]Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to fear them and to astonish them, that they might take the city. [18]Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language to the people who were seated on the wall of Jerusalem, to frighten them and to trouble them, that they might capture the wall of the city.
[19]Thus they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, even the works of man's hands, [19]And they spoke in the name of the gods of the people of the earth and also in the name of the God of Jerusalem, imploring him to reward them according to the work of their hands.
[20]But Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed against this and cried to heaven. [20]Then Hezekiah and Isaiah the son of Amoz, the prophet, prayed because of this, and the LORD heard the voice of their prayer.
[21]And the Lord sent an angel which destroyed all the valiant men, and the princes and captains of the host of the king of Asshur [Assyria]: so he returned with shame to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels, slew him there with the sword. [21]And the LORD sent an angel from before him, who smote all the mighty men of valour and the kings and the princes who were in the camp of the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned in disgrace to his own land. And when he came into the house of his gods, his sons, who came forth of his own loins, slew him there with the sword.
[22]So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Asshur [Assyria], and from the hand of all other, and maintained them on every side. [22]Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hands of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all of those who invaded their borders.
[23]And many brought offerings unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth. [23]And many of the children of Israel brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem, and gave presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted before all nations
[24]In those days Hezekiah was sick unto the death, and prayed unto the Lord, who spake unto him, and gave him a sign. [24]In those days Hezekiah was sick to death, and he prayed before the LORD and said, Thou hast performed mighty miracles for me and thou hast rewarded me according to the works of my hands.
[25]But Hezekiah did not render according to the reward bestowed upon him: for his heart was lift up, and wrath came upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. [25]And the sickness of Hezekiah was due to the pride of his heart; therefore the wrath of the LORD came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
[26]Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself (after that his heart was lifted up) he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah. [26]But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
[27]Hezekiah also had exceeding much riches and honor, and he gat him treasures of silver, and of gold, and of precious stones, and of sweet odors, and of shields, and of all pleasant vessels: [27]And Hezekiah had exceeding great wealth and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver and for gold and for precious stones and for spices and for shields and for all manner of pleasant vessels;
[28]And of storehouses for the increase of wheat and wine and oil, and stalls for all beasts, and rows for the stables. [28]Storehouses also for the increase of grain and wine and oil; and stalls for all kinds of beasts;
[29]And he made him cities, and had possession of sheep and oxen in abundance: for God had given him substance exceeding much. [29]And folds for herds and for flocks, and for oxen and other beasts; for the LORD had given him very much substance.
[30]This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper water springs of Gihon, and led them straight underneath toward the city of David westward. So Hezekiah prospered in all his works. [30]This same Hezekiah also buried the outlet for the waters of the upper spring and brought it straight down to the western cistern of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
[31]But because of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, which sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him to try him, and to know all that was in his heart. [31]And he sought the law of the LORD, as it was given in the land, and the LORD knew all that was in his heart.
[32]Concerning the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. [32]Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness and his excellent ways, behold, they are written in the prophecy of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
[33]So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the highest sepulchre of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead. [33]And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death, and they returned to Jerusalem. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead
