[1]Would to God ye coulde haue suffred me a litle in my foolishnesse: and in dede ye do forbeare me [1]I wolde that ye wolden suffre a litil thing of myn vnwisdom, but also supporte ye me.
[2]For I am gelous ouer you, with Godly gelousie: For I haue coupled you to one man, to present [you] a chaste virgin vnto Christe [2]For Y loue you bi the loue of God; for Y haue spousid you to oon hosebonde, to yelde a chast virgyn to Crist.
[3]But I feare lest by any meanes, that as the serpent begyled Eue through his subtiltie, euen so your myndes shoulde be corrupted fro the singlenesse that is towarde Christe [3]But Y drede, lest as the serpent disseyuede Eue with his sutil fraude, so youre wittis ben corrupt, and fallen doun fro the symplenesse that is in Crist.
[4]For yf he that commeth, preacheth another Iesus, whom we haue not preached: or yf ye receaue another spirite whom ye haue not receaued: either another Gospell which ye haue not receaued, you woulde well haue suffered [hym] [4]For if he that cometh, prechith anothir Crist, whom we precheden not, or if ye taken another spirit, whom ye token not, or another gospel, which ye resseyueden not, riytli ye schulden suffre.
[5]Ueryly I suppose that I was not behynde the chiefe Apostles [5]For Y wene that Y haue don no thing lesse than the grete apostlis.
[6]But though [I be] rude in speakyng, yet not in knowledge, but in all thynges among you, we haue ben well knowen to the vtmost [6]For thouy Y be vnlerud in word, but not in kunnyng. For in alle thingis Y am open to you.
[7]Dyd I sinne because I submitted my selfe, that ye myght be exalted, & because I preached to you the Gospell of God freely [7]Or whether Y haue don synne, mekynge my silf, that ye be enhaunsid, for freli Y prechide to you the gospel of God?
[8]I robbed other Churches, takyng wages of them, to do you seruice [8]Y made nakid othere chirchis, and Y took sowde to youre seruyce.
[9]And when I was present with you, and had nede, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lackyng vnto me, the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied, and in all thynges I haue kept my selfe so that I shoulde not be chargeable to any man, and [so] wyll I kepe my selfe [9]And whanne Y was among you, and hadde nede, Y was chargeouse to no man; for britheren that camen fro Macedonye, fulfilliden that that failide to me. And in alle thingis Y haue kept, and schal kepe me with outen charge to you.
[10]The trueth of Christe is in me, that this reioycyng shall not be shut vp agaynst me in the regions of Achaia [10]The treuthe of Crist is in me; for this glorie schal not be brokun in me in the cuntreis of Acaie.
[11]Wherfore? Because I loue you not? God knoweth [11]Whi? for Y loue not you?
[12]But what I do, that wyll I do, to cut away occasion from them which desire occasion, that they myght be founde lyke vnto vs, in yt wherin they gloried [12]God woot. For that that Y do, and that Y schal do, is that Y kitte awei the occasioun of hem that wolen occasioun, that in the thing, in which thei glorien, thei be foundun as we.
[13]For such false Apostles [are] disceiptfull workers, transfourmed into ye Apostles of Christe [13]For siche false apostlis ben trecherouse werk men, and transfiguren hem in to apostlis of Crist.
[14]And no maruayle, for Satan himselfe is transfourmed into an angel of lyght [14]And no wondur, for Sathanas hym silf transfigurith hym in to an aungel of light.
[15]Therfore it is no great thyng though his ministers be transfourmed as the ministers of righteousnesse, whose ende shalbe accordyng to their workes [15]Therfor it is not greet, if hise mynystris ben transfigurid as the mynystris of riytwisnesse, whos ende schal be aftir her werkis.
[16]I say agayne, let no man thynke that I am foolyshe: or els euen nowe take ye me as a foole, that I also may boast my selfe a litle [16]Eft Y seie, lest ony man gesse me to be vnwise; ellis take ye me as vnwise, that also Y haue glorie a litil what.
[17]That I speake, I speake it not after the Lorde: but as it were foolishly, in this maner of boastyng [17]That that Y speke, Y speke not aftir God, but as in vnwisdom, in this substaunce of glorie.
[18]Seyng that many glorie after ye fleshe, I wyll glorie also [18]For many men glorien aftir the fleisch, and Y schal glorie.
[19]For ye suffer fooles gladly, seyng ye your selues are wyse [19]For ye suffren gladli vnwise men, whanne ye silf ben wise.
[20]For ye suffer, yf a man bryng you into bondage, yf a man deuoure, yf a man take, yf a man exalt hym selfe, yf a man smite you on the face [20]For ye susteynen, if ony man dryueth you in to seruage, if ony man deuourith, if ony man takith, if ony man is enhaunsid, if ony man smytith you on the face.
[21]I speake concernyng reproche, as though we had ben weake: Howbeit, wherin soeuer any man is bolde, (I speake foolishly) I am bolde also [21]Bi vnnoblei Y seie, as if we weren sike in this parti. In what thing ony man dar, in vnwisdom Y seie, and Y dar.
[22]They are Ebrues, euen so am I. They are Israelites, euen so am I. They are the seede of Abraham, euen so am I [22]Thei ben Ebrewis, and Y; thei ben Israelitis, and Y; thei ben the seed of Abraham, and Y;
[23]They are the ministers of Christe, (I speake as a foole) I am more: in labours more aboundant, in stripes aboue measure, in pryson more plenteouslie, in death oft [23]thei ben the mynystris of Crist, and Y. As lesse wise Y seie, Y more; in ful many trauelis, in prisouns more plenteuousli, in woundis aboue maner, in deethis ofte tymes.
[24]Of the Iewes fyue tymes receaued I fourtie [stripes] saue one [24]Y resseyuede of the Jewis fyue sithis fourti strokis oon lesse;
[25]Thryse was I beaten with roddes, once stoned, thrise I suffred shipwracke, nyght and day haue I ben in ye depth [25]thries Y was betun with yerdis, onys Y was stonyd, thries Y was at shipbreche, a nyyt and a dai Y was in the depnesse of the see;
[26]In iourneying often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of myne owne nation, in perils among the heathen, in perils in the citie, in perils in the wildernesse, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren [26]in weies ofte, in perelis of floodis, in perelis of theues, in perelis of kyn, in perelis of hethene men, in perelis in citee, in perelis in desert, in perelis in the see, in perelis among false britheren, in trauel and nedynesse,
[27]In labour & trauayle, in watchinges often, in hunger and thirst, in fastinges often, in colde and nakednesse [27]in many wakyngis, in hungur, in thirst, in many fastyngis, in coold and nakidnesse.
[28]Besides the thynges which outwardlye come vnto me: my dayly encombraunce [is] the care of all the Churches [28]Withouten tho thingis that ben withoutforth, myn ech daies trauelyng is the bisynesse of alle chirchis.
[29]Who is weake, and I am not weake? who is offended, and I burne not [29]Who is sijk, and Y am not sijk? who is sclaundrid, and Y am not brent?
[30]If I must needes glory, I wyll glory of the thynges that concerne myne infirmities [30]If it bihoueth to glorie, Y schal glorie in tho thingis that ben of myn infirmyte.
[31]The God and father of our Lorde Iesus Christe, which is blessed for euermore, knoweth that I lye not [31]God and the fadir of oure Lord Jhesu Crist, that is blessid in to worldis, woot that Y lie not.
[32]In [the citie of] Damascus, Aretas the kynges gouernour of the people, layde watche in the citie of the Damascens, and woulde haue caught me [32]The preuost of Damask, of the kyng of the folk Arethe, kepte the citee of Damascenes to take me;
[33]And at a wyndowe was I let downe in a basket through the wall, and scaped his handes [33]and bi a wyndow in a leep Y was latun doun bi the wal, and so Y ascapide hise hondis.
