| [1]בשנת עשרים ושלש שנה ליואש בן אחזיהו מלך יהודה־מלך יהואחז בן יהוא על ישראל בשמרון שבע עשרה שנה |
[1]In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen year. |
| [2]ויעש הרע בעיני יהוה וילך אחר חטאת ירבעם בן נבט אשר החטיא את ישראל־לא סר ממנה |
[2]And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin, and departed not there from. |
| [3]ויחר אף יהוה בישראל ויתנם ביד חזאל מלך ארם וביד בן הדד בן חזאל־כל הימים |
[3]And the Lord was angry with Israel, and delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Aram [Syria], and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael, all his days. |
| [4]ויחל יהואחז את פני יהוה וישמע אליו יהוה כי ראה את לחץ ישראל כי לחץ אתם מלך ארם |
[4]And Jehoahaz besought the Lord, and the Lord heard him: for he saw the trouble of Israel, wherewith the king of Aram [Syria] troubled them. |
| [5]ויתן יהוה לישראל מושיע ויצאו מתחת יד ארם וישבו בני ישראל באהליהם כתמול שלשום |
[5](And the Lord gave Israel a deliverer, so that they came out from under the subjection of the Aramites [Syrians]. And the children of Israel dwelt in their tents as before time. |
| [6]אך לא סרו מחטאת בית ירבעם אשר החטי את ישראל־בה הלך וגם האשרה עמדה בשמרון |
[6]Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam which made Israel sin, but walked in them. Even the grove also remained still in Samaria) |
| [7]כי לא השאיר ליהואחז עם כי אם חמשים פרשים ועשרה רכב ועשרת אלפים רגלי כי אבדם מלך ארם וישמם כעפר לדש |
[7]For he had left of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen, because the king of Aram [Syria] had destroyed them, and made them like dust beaten to powder. |
| [8]ויתר דברי יהואחז וכל אשר עשה וגבורתו הלוא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים־למלכי ישראל |
[8]Concerning the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz and all that he did, and his valiant deeds, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? |
| [9]וישכב יהואחז עם אבתיו ויקברהו בשמרון וימלך יואש בנו תחתיו |
[9]And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria, and Joash his son reigned in his stead. |
| [10]בשנת שלשים ושבע שנה ליואש מלך יהודה־מלך יהואש בן יהואחז על ישראל בשמרון שש עשרה שנה |
[10]In the seven and thirtieth year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen year, |
| [11]ויעשה הרע בעיני יהוה לא סר מכל חטאות ירבעם בן נבט אשר החטיא את ישראל־בה הלך |
[11]And did evil in the sight of the Lord: for he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat that made Israel to sin, but he walked therein. |
| [12]ויתר דברי יואש וכל אשר עשה וגבורתו אשר נלחם עם אמציה מלך יהודה הלא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים־למלכי ישראל |
[12]Concerning the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did, and his valiant deeds, and how he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? |
| [13]וישכב יואש עם אבתיו וירבעם ישב על כסאו ויקבר יואש בשמרון עם מלכי ישראל |
[13]And Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat upon his seat: and Joash was buried in Samaria among the kings of Israel. |
| [14]ואלישע חלה את חליו אשר ימות בו וירד אליו יואש מלך ישראל ויבך על פניו ויאמר אבי אבי רכב ישראל ופרשיו |
[14]When Elisha fell sick of his sickness whereof he died, Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept upon his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen of the same. |
| [15]ויאמר לו אלישע קח קשת וחצים ויקח אליו קשת וחצים |
[15]Then Elisha said unto him, Take a bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows. |
| [16]ויאמר למלך ישראל הרכב ידך על הקשת וירכב ידו וישם אלישע ידיו על ידי המלך |
[16]And he said to the king of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it. And Elisha put his hands upon the king's hands, |
| [17]ויאמר פתח החלון קדמה־ויפתח ויאמר אלישע ירה ויור ויאמר חץ תשועה ליהוה וחץ תשועה בארם והכית את ארם באפק עד כלה |
[17]And said, Open the window eastward. And when he had opened it, Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, Behold the arrow of the Lord's deliverance and the arrow of deliverance against Aram [Syria]: for thou shalt smite the Aramites [Syrians] in Aphek, till thou hast consumed them. |
| [18]ויאמר קח החצים ויקח ויאמר למלך ישראל הך ארצה ויך שלש פעמים ויעמד |
[18]Again he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite the ground. And he smote thrice, and ceased. |
| [19]ויקצף עליו איש האלהים ויאמר להכות חמש או שש פעמים אז הכית את ארם עד כלה ועתה שלש פעמים תכה את ארם |
[19]Then the man of God was angry with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times, so thou shouldest have smitten Aram [Syria], till thou hadst consumed it, where now thou shalt smite Aram [Syria] but thrice. |
| [20]וימת אלישע ויקברהו וגדודי מואב יבאו בארץ בא שנה |
[20]So Elisha died, and they buried him. And certain bands of the Moabites came into the land that year. |
| [21]ויהי הם קברים איש והנה ראו את הגדוד וישליכו את האיש בקבר אלישע וילך ויגע האיש בעצמות אלישע ויחי ויקם על רגליו |
[21]And as they were burying a man, behold, they saw the soldiers: therefore they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha. And when the man was down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood upon his feet. |
| [22]וחזאל מלך ארם לחץ את ישראל כל ימי יהואחז |
[22]But Hazael king of Aram [Syria] vexed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. |
| [23]ויחן יהוה אתם וירחמם ויפן אליהם למען בריתו את אברהם יצחק ויעקב ולא אבה השחיתם ולא השליכם מעל פניו עד עתה |
[23]Therefore the Lord had mercy on them and pitied them, and had respect unto them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from him as yet. |
| [24]וימת חזאל מלך ארם וימלך בן הדד בנו תחתיו |
[24]So Hazael the king of Aram [Syria] died: and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead. |
| [25]וישב יהואש בן יהואחז ויקח את הערים מיד בן הדד בן חזאל אשר לקח מיד יהואחז אביו במלחמה שלש פעמים הכהו יואש וישב את ערי ישראל |
[25]Therefore Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz returned, and took out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken away by war out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father: for three times did Joash beat him, and restored the cities unto Israel. |
