[1]And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go number Israel and Judah. [1]And againH3254[H8686] the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 was kindledH2734[H8800] against IsraelH3478, and he movedH5496[H8686] DavidH1732 against them to sayH559[H8800], GoH3212[H8798], numberH4487[H8798] IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063.
[2]For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people. [2]For the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] to JoabH3097 the captainH8269 of the hostH2428, which was with him, Go now throughH7751[H8798] all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, from DanH1835 even to BeershebaH884, and numberH6485[H8798] ye the peopleH5971, that I may knowH3045[H8804] the numberH4557 of the peopleH5971.
[3]And Joab said to the king, Now the LORD thy God add to the people, how many soever they may be, a hundred-fold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing? [3]And JoabH3097 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, Now the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 addH3254[H8686] unto the peopleH5971, how many soeverH1992 they be, an hundredfoldH3967[H6471], and that the eyesH5869 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 may seeH7200[H8802] it: but why doth my lordH113 the kingH4428 delightH2654[H8804] in this thingH1697?
[4]Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. [4]Notwithstanding the king'sH4428 wordH1697 prevailedH2388[H8799] against JoabH3097, and against the captainsH8269 of the hostH2428. And JoabH3097 and the captainsH8269 of the hostH2428 went outH3318[H8799] from the presenceH6440 of the kingH4428, to numberH6485[H8800] the peopleH5971 of IsraelH3478.
[5]And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and towards Jazer: [5]And they passed overH5674[H8799] JordanH3383, and pitchedH2583[H8799] in AroerH6177, on the right sideH3225 of the cityH5892 that lieth in the midstH8432 of the riverH5158 of GadH1410, and toward JazerH3270:
[6]Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon, [6]Then they cameH935[H8799] to GileadH1568, and to the landH776 of TahtimhodshiH8483; and they cameH935[H8799] to DanjaanH1842, and aboutH5439 to ZidonH6721,
[7]And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba. [7]And cameH935[H8799] to the strong holdH4013 of TyreH6865, and to all the citiesH5892 of the HivitesH2340, and of the CanaanitesH3669: and they went outH3318[H8799] to the southH5045 of JudahH3063, even to BeershebaH884.
[8]So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. [8]So when they had goneH7751[H8799] through all the landH776, they cameH935[H8799] to JerusalemH3389 at the endH7097 of nineH8672 monthsH2320 and twentyH6242 daysH3117.
[9]And Joab presented the sum of the number of the people to the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. [9]And JoabH3097 gave upH5414[H8799] the sumH4557 of the numberH4662 of the peopleH5971 unto the kingH4428: and there were in IsraelH3478 eightH8083 hundredH3967 thousandH505 valiantH2428 menH376[H8677][H381] that drewH8025[H8802] the swordH2719; and the menH376 of JudahH3063 were fiveH2568 hundredH3967 thousandH505 menH376.
[10]And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. [10]And David'sH1732 heartH3820 smoteH5221[H8686] him afterH310 that he had numberedH5608[H8804] the peopleH5971. And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto the LORDH3068, I have sinnedH2398[H8804] greatlyH3966 in that I have doneH6213[H8804]: and now, I beseech thee, O LORDH3068, take awayH5674[H8685] the iniquityH5771 of thy servantH5650; for I have done veryH3966 foolishlyH5528.[H8738]
[11]For when David had risen in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, [11]For when DavidH1732 was upH6965[H8799] in the morningH1242, the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 came unto the prophetH5030 GadH1410, David'sH1732 seerH2374, sayingH559,[H8800]
[12]Go and say to David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it to thee. [12]GoH1980[H8800] and sayH559[H8804] unto DavidH1732, Thus saithH1696[H8765] the LORDH3068, I offerH5190[H8802] thee threeH7969 things; chooseH977[H8798] thee oneH259 of them, that I may do it unto theeH6213.[H8799]
[13]So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, Shall seven years of famine come upon thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? Now consider, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. [13]So GadH1410 cameH935[H8799] to DavidH1732, and toldH5046[H8686] him, and saidH559[H8799] unto him, Shall sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of famineH7458 comeH935[H8799] unto thee in thy landH776? or wilt thou fleeH5127[H8800] threeH7969 monthsH2320 beforeH6440 thine enemiesH6862, while they pursueH7291[H8802] thee? or that there be threeH7969 days'H3117 pestilenceH1698 in thy landH776? now adviseH3045[H8798], and seeH7200[H8798] what answerH1697 I shall returnH7725[H8686] to him that sentH7971 meH8802.
[14]And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man. [14]And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799] unto GadH1410, I am in a greatH3966 straitH6887[H8804]: let us fallH5307[H8799] now into the handH3027 of the LORDH3068; for his merciesH7356 are greatH7227: and let me not fallH5307[H8799] into the handH3027 of manH120.
[15]So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. [15]So the LORDH3068 sentH5414[H8799] a pestilenceH1698 upon IsraelH3478 from the morningH1242 even to the timeH6256 appointedH4150: and there diedH4191[H8799] of the peopleH5971 from DanH1835 even to BeershebaH884 seventyH7657 thousandH505 menH376.
[16]And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thy hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing-place of Araunah the Jebusite. [16]And when the angelH4397 stretched outH7971[H8799] his handH3027 upon JerusalemH3389 to destroyH7843[H8763] it, the LORDH3068 repentedH5162[H8735] him of the evilH7451, and saidH559[H8799] to the angelH4397 that destroyedH7843[H8688] the peopleH5971, It is enoughH7227: stayH7503[H8685] now thine handH3027. And the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 was by the threshingplaceH1637 of AraunahH728 the JebusiteH2983.
[17]And David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house. [17]And DavidH1732 spakeH559[H8799] unto the LORDH3068 when he sawH7200[H8800] the angelH4397 that smoteH5221[H8688] the peopleH5971, and saidH559[H8799], Lo, I have sinnedH2398[H8804], and I have done wickedlyH5753[H8689]: but these sheepH6629, what have they doneH6213[H8804]? let thine handH3027, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father'sH1 houseH1004.
[18]And Gad came that day to David, and said to him, Go up, rear an altar to the LORD in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. [18]And GadH1410 cameH935[H8799] that dayH3117 to DavidH1732, and saidH559[H8799] unto him, Go upH5927[H8798], rearH6965[H8685] an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068 in the threshingfloorH1637 of AraunahH728 the JebusiteH2983.
[19]And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded. [19]And DavidH1732, according to the sayingH1697 of GadH1410, went upH5927[H8799] as the LORDH3068 commandedH6680.[H8765]
[20]And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming towards him: And Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground. [20]And AraunahH728 lookedH8259[H8686], and sawH7200[H8799] the kingH4428 and his servantsH5650 coming onH5674[H8802] toward him: and AraunahH728 went outH3318[H8799], and bowedH7812[H8691] himself before the kingH4428 on his faceH639 upon the groundH776.
[21]And Araunah said, Why is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people. [21]And AraunahH728 saidH559[H8799], Wherefore is my lordH113 the kingH4428 comeH935[H8804] to his servantH5650? And DavidH1732 saidH559[H8799], To buyH7069[H8800] the threshingfloorH1637 of thee, to buildH1129[H8800] an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068, that the plagueH4046 may be stayedH6113[H8735] from the peopleH5971.
[22]And Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good to him: behold, here are oxen for burnt-sacrifice, and threshing-instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. [22]And AraunahH728 saidH559[H8799] unto DavidH1732, Let my lordH113 the kingH4428 takeH3947[H8799] and offer upH5927[H8686] what seemeth goodH2896 unto himH5869: beholdH7200[H8798], here be oxenH1241 for burnt sacrificeH5930, and threshing instrumentsH4173 and other instrumentsH3627 of the oxenH1241 for woodH6086.
[23]All these things did Araunah, as a king, give to the king. And Araunah said to the king, The LORD thy God accept thee. [23]All these things did AraunahH728, as a kingH4428, giveH5414[H8804] unto the kingH4428. And AraunahH728 saidH559[H8799] unto the kingH4428, The LORDH3068 thy GodH430 acceptH7521 theeH8799.
[24]And the king said to Araunah, No; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt-offerings to the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. [24]And the kingH4428 saidH559[H8799] unto AraunahH728, Nay; but I will surelyH7069[H8800] buyH7069[H8799] it of thee at a priceH4242: neither will I offerH5927[H8686] burnt offeringsH5930 unto the LORDH3068 my GodH430 of that which doth cost me nothingH2600. So DavidH1732 boughtH7069[H8799] the threshingfloorH1637 and the oxenH1241 for fiftyH2572 shekelsH8255 of silverH3701.
[25]And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel. [25]And DavidH1732 builtH1129[H8799] there an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068, and offeredH5927[H8686] burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offeringsH8002. So the LORDH3068 was intreatedH6279[H8735] for the landH776, and the plagueH4046 was stayedH6113[H8735] from IsraelH3478.
