| [1]ἀνὴρ δέ τις ἐν καισαρείᾳ ὀνόματι κορνήλιος, ἑκατοντάρχης ἐκ σπείρης τῆς καλουμένης ἰταλικῆς, |
[1]THERE was in Caes-a-re'a a man called Cornelius, a centurion of the regiment which is called the Italian, |
| [2]εὐσεβὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν σὺν παντὶ τῶ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ, ποιῶν ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς τῶ λαῶ καὶ δεόμενος τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ παντός, |
[2]A righteous and God-fearing man as were all his household; which gave much alms to the people, and always sought after God. |
| [3]εἶδεν ἐν ὁράματι φανερῶς ὡσεὶ περὶ ὥραν ἐνάτην τῆς ἡμέρας ἄγγελον τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσελθόντα πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἰπόντα αὐτῶ, κορνήλιε. |
[3]Very openly in a vision about three o'clock in the afternoon he saw an angel of God who came in to him, and said to him, Cornelius. |
| [4]ὁ δὲ ἀτενίσας αὐτῶ καὶ ἔμφοβος γενόμενος εἶπεν, τί ἐστιν, κύριε; εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῶ, αἱ προσευχαί σου καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἀνέβησαν εἰς μνημόσυνον ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ θεοῦ. |
[4]And he looked at the angel and was afraid, and he said, What is it, my LORD? And the angel said to him, Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. |
| [5]καὶ νῦν πέμψον ἄνδρας εἰς ἰόππην καὶ μετάπεμψαι σίμωνά τινα ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται πέτρος· |
[5]And now send men to the city of Joppa, and bring here Simon who is called Peter: |
| [6]οὖτος ξενίζεται παρά τινι σίμωνι βυρσεῖ, ᾧ ἐστιν οἰκία παρὰ θάλασσαν. |
[6]Behold he is staying with Simon Bur-saya, the tanner, whose house is by the seaside. |
| [7]ὡς δὲ ἀπῆλθεν ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν αὐτῶ, φωνήσας δύο τῶν οἰκετῶν καὶ στρατιώτην εὐσεβῆ τῶν προσκαρτερούντων αὐτῶ, |
[7]And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household, and a soldier who believed in God and was obedient to him; |
| [8]καὶ ἐξηγησάμενος ἅπαντα αὐτοῖς ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν ἰόππην. |
[8]And he related to them everything that he had seen, and sent them to Joppa. |
| [9]τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ὁδοιπορούντων ἐκείνων καὶ τῇ πόλει ἐγγιζόντων ἀνέβη πέτρος ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα προσεύξασθαι περὶ ὥραν ἕκτην. |
[9]The next day, while they were on their journey, drawing near to the city, Simon Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about noontime. |
| [10]ἐγένετο δὲ πρόσπεινος καὶ ἤθελεν γεύσασθαι· παρασκευαζόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἐγένετο ἐπ᾽ αὐτὸν ἔκστασις, |
[10]And he became hungry, and wanted to eat: but while they were preparing food for him, he was seized with a sudden faintness. |
| [11]καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγμένον καὶ καταβαῖνον σκεῦός τι ὡς ὀθόνην μεγάλην τέσσαρσιν ἀρχαῖς καθιέμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, |
[11]And he saw the sky open and something fastened at the four corners, resembling a large linen cloth, was let down from heaven to the earth: |
| [12]ἐν ᾧ ὑπῆρχεν πάντα τὰ τετράποδα καὶ ἑρπετὰ τῆς γῆς καὶ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ. |
[12]And there were in it all kind of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air. |
| [13]καὶ ἐγένετο φωνὴ πρὸς αὐτόν, ἀναστάς, πέτρε, θῦσον καὶ φάγε. |
[13]And there came a voice to him, saying, Simon Peter, rise; kill and eat. |
| [14]ὁ δὲ πέτρος εἶπεν, μηδαμῶς, κύριε, ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἔφαγον πᾶν κοινὸν καὶ ἀκάθαρτον. |
[14]But Simon Peter said, Far be it, my LORD; for I have never eaten anything which was unclean and defiled. |
| [15]καὶ φωνὴ πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου πρὸς αὐτόν, ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου. |
[15]And again the voice came to him a second time, What God has cleansed, you should not call unclean. |
| [16]τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τρίς, καὶ εὐθὺς ἀνελήμφθη τὸ σκεῦος εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν. |
[16]This happened the third time: then the cloth was lifted up to the heaven. |
| [17]ὡς δὲ ἐν ἑαυτῶ διηπόρει ὁ πέτρος τί ἂν εἴη τὸ ὅραμα ὃ εἶδεν, ἰδοὺ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι ὑπὸ τοῦ κορνηλίου διερωτήσαντες τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ σίμωνος ἐπέστησαν ἐπὶ τὸν πυλῶνα, |
[17]Now while Simon Peter was bewildered, wondering in himself what the vision he had seen should mean, the men who were sent by Cornelius arrived, and enquired for the house in which Simon Peter had been staying, and they came and stood at the door of the courtyard. |
| [18]καὶ φωνήσαντες ἐπυνθάνοντο εἰ σίμων ὁ ἐπικαλούμενος πέτρος ἐνθάδε ξενίζεται. |
[18]And from there they called and asked if Simon who is called Peter stayed there. |
| [19]τοῦ δὲ πέτρου διενθυμουμένου περὶ τοῦ ὁράματος εἶπεν [αὐτῶ] τὸ πνεῦμα, ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες τρεῖς ζητοῦντές σε· |
[19]While Simon Peter meditated about the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold three men seek you. |
| [20]ἀλλὰ ἀναστὰς κατάβηθι καὶ πορεύου σὺν αὐτοῖς μηδὲν διακρινόμενος, ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀπέσταλκα αὐτούς. |
[20]Arise, go down, and go with them, without doubt in your mind: for I have sent them. |
| [21]καταβὰς δὲ πέτρος πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ ἐγώ εἰμι ὃν ζητεῖτε· τίς ἡ αἰτία δι᾽ ἣν πάρεστε; |
[21]Then Simon Peter went down to the men and said, I am the man you seek. What is the purpose of your mission? |
| [22]οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, κορνήλιος ἑκατοντάρχης, ἀνὴρ δίκαιος καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν μαρτυρούμενός τε ὑπὸ ὅλου τοῦ ἔθνους τῶν ἰουδαίων, ἐχρηματίσθη ὑπὸ ἀγγέλου ἁγίου μεταπέμψασθαί σε εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ῥήματα παρὰ σοῦ. |
[22]They said to him, A man called Cornelius, a righteous and God-fearing centurion of whom all the Jewish people speak well, was told in a vision by a holy angel to send and bring you to his house and to hear words from you. |
| [23]εἰσκαλεσάμενος οὗν αὐτοὺς ἐξένισεν. τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν αὐτοῖς, καί τινες τῶν ἀδελφῶν τῶν ἀπὸ ἰόππης συνῆλθον αὐτῶ. |
[23]So Simon Peter brought them into the place where he was staying and welcomed them. The next day he arose and went with them, and a few men from amongst the brethren of Joppa accompanied him. |
| [24]τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν καισάρειαν· ὁ δὲ κορνήλιος ἦν προσδοκῶν αὐτούς, συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς συγγενεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἀναγκαίους φίλους. |
[24]And the next day they entered Caes-are'a. And Cornelius was waiting for them, and all his relatives and also his dear friends were assembled with him. |
| [25]ὡς δὲ ἐγένετο τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν τὸν πέτρον, συναντήσας αὐτῶ ὁ κορνήλιος πεσὼν ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας προσεκύνησεν. |
[25]And just as Simon Peter was entering, Cornelius met him and threw himself at his feet and worshipped him. |
| [26]ὁ δὲ πέτρος ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν λέγων, ἀνάστηθι· καὶ ἐγὼ αὐτὸς ἄνθρωπός εἰμι. |
[26]But Simon Peter raised him, saying, Stand up; I am but a man also. |
| [27]καὶ συνομιλῶν αὐτῶ εἰσῆλθεν, καὶ εὑρίσκει συνεληλυθότας πολλούς, |
[27]And after he had talked with him, he went in and found a great many people had come there. |
| [28]ἔφη τε πρὸς αὐτούς, ὑμεῖς ἐπίστασθε ὡς ἀθέμιτόν ἐστιν ἀνδρὶ ἰουδαίῳ κολλᾶσθαι ἢ προσέρχεσθαι ἀλλοφύλῳ· κἀμοὶ ὁ θεὸς ἔδειξεν μηδένα κοινὸν ἢ ἀκάθαρτον λέγειν ἄνθρωπον· |
[28]So he said to them, You know well that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with a stranger who is not of his tribe; but God has showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. |
| [29]διὸ καὶ ἀναντιρρήτως ἦλθον μεταπεμφθείς. πυνθάνομαι οὗν τίνι λόγῳ μετεπέμψασθέ με; |
[29]This is why I came at once when you sent for me: but now let me ask you, for what reason have you sent for me? |
| [30]καὶ ὁ κορνήλιος ἔφη, ἀπὸ τετάρτης ἡμέρας μέχρι ταύτης τῆς ὥρας ἤμην τὴν ἐνάτην προσευχόμενος ἐν τῶ οἴκῳ μου, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐνώπιόν μου ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ |
[30]Then Cornelius said to him, Four days I have been fasting; and at three o'clock in the afternoon while I was praying in my house, a man dressed in white garments stood before me. |
| [31]καὶ φησίν, κορνήλιε, εἰσηκούσθη σου ἡ προσευχὴ καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἐμνήσθησαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ. |
[31]And said to me, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are a memorial before God. |
| [32]πέμψον οὗν εἰς ἰόππην καὶ μετακάλεσαι σίμωνα ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται πέτρος· οὖτος ξενίζεται ἐν οἰκίᾳ σίμωνος βυρσέως παρὰ θάλασσαν. |
[32]But send to the city of Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; behold he is staying in the house of Simon Bur-sa'ya, the tanner, by the seaside: and he will come and talk with you. |
| [33]ἐξαυτῆς οὗν ἔπεμψα πρὸς σέ, σύ τε καλῶς ἐποίησας παραγενόμενος. νῦν οὗν πάντες ἡμεῖς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ πάρεσμεν ἀκοῦσαι πάντα τὰ προστεταγμένα σοι ὑπὸ τοῦ κυρίου. |
[33]At that very time I sent for you, and you have done well to come. Behold we are all here present before you, and we wish to hear everything commanded thee from God. |
| [34]ἀνοίξας δὲ πέτρος τὸ στόμα εἶπεν, ἐπ᾽ ἀληθείας καταλαμβάνομαι ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν προσωπολήμπτης ὁ θεός, |
[34]Then Simon Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: |
| [35]ἀλλ᾽ ἐν παντὶ ἔθνει ὁ φοβούμενος αὐτὸν καὶ ἐργαζόμενος δικαιοσύνην δεκτὸς αὐτῶ ἐστιν. |
[35]But among all people, he who fears him and works righteousness is accepted with him. |
| [36]τὸν λόγον [ὃν] ἀπέστειλεν τοῖς υἱοῖς ἰσραὴλ εὐαγγελιζόμενος εἰρήνην διὰ ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ _ οὖτός ἐστιν πάντων κύριος _ |
[36]For God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace and tranquility by Jesus Christ: he is the LORD of all. |
| [37]ὑμεῖς οἴδατε, τὸ γενόμενον ῥῆμα καθ᾽ ὅλης τῆς ἰουδαίας, ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς γαλιλαίας μετὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐκήρυξεν ἰωάννης, |
[37]And you also are familiar with the news which was published throughout Judaea, which sprang from Galilee, after the baptism preached by John; |
| [38]ἰησοῦν τὸν ἀπὸ ναζαρέθ, ὡς ἔχρισεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεὸς πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ δυνάμει, ὃς διῆλθεν εὐεργετῶν καὶ ἰώμενος πάντας τοὺς καταδυναστευομένους ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἦν μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ. |
[38]Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power, and who, because God was with him, went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil. |
| [39]καὶ ἡμεῖς μάρτυρες πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν ἔν τε τῇ χώρᾳ τῶν ἰουδαίων καὶ [ἐν] ἰερουσαλήμ· ὃν καὶ ἀνεῖλαν κρεμάσαντες ἐπὶ ξύλου. |
[39]And we are witnesses of all things which he did throughout the land of Judaea and in Jerusalem. This very one the Jews crucified on a cross and killed him: |
| [40]τοῦτον ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν [ἐν] τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν ἐμφανῆ γενέσθαι, |
[40]Him God raised on the third day, and showed him openly; |
| [41]οὐ παντὶ τῶ λαῶ ἀλλὰ μάρτυσιν τοῖς προκεχειροτονημένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἡμῖν, οἵτινες συνεφάγομεν καὶ συνεπίομεν αὐτῶ μετὰ τὸ ἀναστῆναι αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν· |
[41]Not to all the people, but to us who have been chosen by God to be his witnesses, for we did eat and drink with him after his resurrection from the dead. |
| [42]καὶ παρήγγειλεν ἡμῖν κηρύξαι τῶ λαῶ καὶ διαμαρτύρασθαι ὅτι οὖτός ἐστιν ὁ ὡρισμένος ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ κριτὴς ζώντων καὶ νεκρῶν. |
[42]And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify, that it is he who was ordained by God to be the judge of the living and of the dead. |
| [43]τούτῳ πάντες οἱ προφῆται μαρτυροῦσιν, ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν λαβεῖν διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ πάντα τὸν πιστεύοντα εἰς αὐτόν. |
[43]To him, all the prophets testified that whosoever believes in his name shall receive remission of sins. |
| [44]ἔτι λαλοῦντος τοῦ πέτρου τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἐπέπεσεν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας τὸν λόγον. |
[44]While Simon Peter spoke these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all who heard the word. |
| [45]καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς πιστοὶ ὅσοι συνῆλθαν τῶ πέτρῳ, ὅτι καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη ἡ δωρεὰ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐκκέχυται· |
[45]And the Jewish converts who had come with him were seized with amazement because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also; |
| [46]ἤκουον γὰρ αὐτῶν λαλούντων γλώσσαις καὶ μεγαλυνόντων τὸν θεόν. τότε ἀπεκρίθη πέτρος, |
[46]For they heard them speak with divers tongues, and magnify God. |
| [47]μήτι τὸ ὕδωρ δύναται κωλῦσαί τις τοῦ μὴ βαπτισθῆναι τούτους οἵτινες τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἔλαβον ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς; |
[47]Then Simon Peter said to them, Can any man forbid water, that these people who have received the Holy Spirit, just as we have, should not be baptized? |
| [48]προσέταξεν δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῶ ὀνόματι ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ βαπτισθῆναι. τότε ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας τινάς. |
[48]And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. And they urged him to remain with them a few days. |
