Pes(Lam)
[1]NowG1161 aboutG2596 thatG1565 timeG2540 HerodG2264 the kingG935 stretched forthG1911[G5627] his handsG5495 to vexG2559[G5658] certainG5100 ofG575 the churchG1577. [1]NOW at that very time Herod the king surnamed A-grip'pa seized some of the people of the church to oppress them.
[2]AndG1161 he killedG337[G5627] JamesG2385 the brotherG80 of JohnG2491 with the swordG3162. [2]And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
[3]AndG2532 because he sawG1492[G5631] itG3754 pleasedG2076[G5748][G701] the JewsG2453, he proceeded furtherG4369[G5639] to takeG4815[G5629] PeterG4074 alsoG2532. (ThenG1161 wereG2258[G5713] the daysG2250 of unleavened breadG106.) [3]And when he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Simon Peter also. This happened during the days of unleavened bread.
[4]AndG3739[G2532] when he had apprehendedG4084[G5660] him, he putG5087[G5639] him inG1519 prisonG5438, and deliveredG3860[G5631] him to fourG5064 quaternionsG5069 of soldiersG4757 to keepG5442[G5721] himG846; intendingG1014[G5740] afterG3326 EasterG3957 to bringG321 himG846 forthG321[G5629] to the peopleG2992. [4]So he seized him and put him in prison and delivered him to the care of sixteen soldiers to keep him, so that he might deliver him to the Jewish people after the passover.
[5]PeterG4074[G3303] thereforeG3767 was keptG5083[G5712] inG1722 prisonG5438: butG1161 prayerG4335 wasG2258[G5713] madeG1096[G5740] without ceasingG1618 ofG5259 the churchG1577 untoG4314 GodG2316 forG5228 himG846. [5]And while Simon Peter was kept in the prison, continual prayer was offered for him to God by the church.
[6]AndG1161 whenG3753 HerodG2264 wouldG3195[G5707] have broughtG4254 himG846 forthG4254[G5721], the sameG1565 nightG3571 PeterG4074 wasG2258[G5713] sleepingG2837[G5746] betweenG3342 twoG1417 soldiersG4757, boundG1210[G5772] with twoG1417 chainsG254: andG5037 the keepersG5441 beforeG4253 the doorG2374 keptG5083[G5707] the prisonG5438. [6]And on the very night before the morning that he was to be delivered up, while Simon Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and others were guarding the doors of the prison,
[7]AndG2532, beholdG2400[G5628], the angelG32 of the LordG2962 came uponG2186[G5627] him, andG2532 a lightG5457 shinedG2989[G5656] inG1722 the prisonG3612: andG1161 he smoteG3960[G5660] PeterG4074 on the sideG4125, and raisedG1453 himG846 upG1453[G5656], sayingG3004[G5723], Arise upG450[G5628] quicklyG1722[G5034]. AndG2532 hisG846 chainsG254 fell offG1601[G5627] fromG1537 his handsG5495. [7]The angel of the LORD stood over him, and a light shone in all the prison: and the angel touched him on the side and awoke him, and said to him, Rise up quickly. And the chains fell off from his hands.
[8]AndG5037 the angelG32 saidG2036[G5627] untoG4314 himG846, Gird thyselfG4024[G5669], andG2532 bind onG5265[G5669] thyG4675 sandalsG4547. AndG1161 soG3779 he didG4160[G5656]. AndG2532 he saithG3004[G5719] unto himG846, CastG4016 thy garmentG2440 aboutG4016[G5640] theeG4675, andG2532 followG190[G5720] meG3427. [8]And the angel said to him, Bind on your girdle and put on your sandals. And so he did. And again he said to him, Put on your robe and follow me.
[9]AndG2532 he went outG1831[G5631], and followedG190[G5707] himG846; andG2532 wistG1492[G5715] notG3756 thatG3754 it wasG2076[G5748] trueG227 whichG3588 was doneG1096[G5740] byG1223 the angelG32; butG1161 thoughtG1380[G5707] he sawG991[G5721] a visionG3705. [9]And he went out, and followed the angel, not knowing that what was done by the angel was true, but thought he saw a vision.
[10]WhenG1161 they were pastG1330[G5631] the firstG4413 andG2532 the secondG1208 wardG5438, they cameG2064[G5627] untoG1909 the ironG4603 gateG4439 that leadethG5342[G5723] untoG1519 the cityG4172; whichG3748 openedG455[G5681] to themG846 of his own accordG844: andG2532 they went outG1831[G5631], and passed on throughG4281[G5627] oneG3391 streetG4505; andG2532 forthwithG2112 the angelG32 departedG868[G5627] fromG575 himG846. [10]When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate and it opened to them of its own accord; and when they had gone out, and had passed one street, the angel departed from him.
[11]AndG2532 when PeterG4074 was comeG1096[G5637] toG1722 himselfG1438, he saidG2036[G5627], NowG3568 I knowG1492[G5758] of a suretyG230, thatG3754 the LordG2962 hath sentG1821[G5656] hisG846 angelG32, andG2532 hath deliveredG1807[G5639] meG3165 out ofG1537 the handG5495 of HerodG2264, andG2532 from allG3956 the expectationG4329 of the peopleG2992 of the JewsG2453. [11]And when Simon Peter came to himself he said, Now I surely know, that the LORD has sent his angel and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, the king, and from all that the Jews were conspiring against me.
[12]AndG5037 when he had consideredG4894[G5631] the thing, he cameG2064[G5627] toG1909 the houseG3614 of MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of JohnG2491, whose surname wasG1941[G5746] MarkG3138; whereG3757 manyG2425 wereG2258[G5713] gathered togetherG4867[G5772] prayingG2532[G4336].[G5740] [12]And when he understood, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; because many brethren were gathered there praying.
[13]AndG1161 as PeterG4074 knocked atG2925[G5660] the doorG2374 of the gateG4440, a damselG3814 cameG4334[G5627] to hearkenG5219[G5658], namedG3686 RhodaG4498. [13]When he knocked at the door of the courtyard, a little girl named Rhoda came out to answer.
[14]AndG2532 when she knewG1921[G5631] Peter'sG4074 voiceG5456, she openedG455[G5656] notG3756 the gateG4440 forG575 gladnessG5479, butG1161 ran inG1532[G5631], and told howG518[G5656] PeterG4074 stoodG2476[G5760] beforeG4253 the gateG4440. [14]And when she recognized Simon's voice, because of her joy she did not open the door to him, but ran back and told, Behold Simon Peter stands at the gate of the courtyard.
[15]AndG1161 they saidG2036[G5627] untoG4314 herG846, Thou art madG3105[G5736]. ButG1161 she constantly affirmedG1340[G5711] that it wasG2192[G5721] even soG3779. ThenG1161 said theyG3004[G5707], It isG2076[G5748] hisG846 angelG32. [15]They said to her, You are confused. But she argued that it was so. Then said they, Perhaps it is his angel.
[16]ButG1161 PeterG4074 continuedG1961[G5707] knockingG2925[G5723]: andG1161 when they had openedG455[G5660] the door, and sawG1492[G5627] himG846,[G2532] they were astonishedG1839.[G5627] [16]But Simon Peter continued knocking at the door; and they went out, and saw him, and were astonished.
[17]ButG1161 he, beckoningG2678[G5660] unto themG846 with the handG5495 to hold their peaceG4601[G5721], declaredG1334[G5662] unto themG846 howG4459 the LordG2962 had broughtG1806[G5627] himG846 out ofG1537 the prisonG5438. AndG1161 he saidG2036[G5627], Go shewG518[G5657] these thingsG5023 unto JamesG2385, andG2532 to the brethrenG80. AndG2532 he departedG1831[G5631], and wentG4198[G5675] intoG1519 anotherG2087 placeG5117. [17]But he motioned to them with his hand to keep quiet; then he entered and related to them how the LORD had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Tell these things to James, and to our brethren. And he went out, and departed for another place.
[18]NowG1161 as soon as it wasG1096[G5637] dayG2250, there wasG2258[G5713] noG3756 smallG3641 stirG5017 amongG1722 the soldiersG4757, whatG5101[G686] was becomeG1096[G5633] of PeterG4074. [18]Now when it was morning, there was great tumult among the soldiers as to what had become of Simon Peter.
[19]AndG1161 whenG1934 HerodG2264 had sought forG1934[G5660] himG846, andG2532 found himG2147[G5631] notG3361, he examinedG350[G5660] the keepersG5441, and commandedG2753[G5656] that they should be put to deathG520[G5683]. AndG2532 he went downG2718[G5631] fromG575 JudaeaG2449 toG1519 CaesareaG2542, and there abodeG1304.[G5707] [19]When Herod had sought him and could not find him, he sentenced the guards and commanded that they should be put to death. And Simon Peter left Ju-dae'a and stayed at Caes-a-re'a.
[20]AndG1161 HerodG2264 wasG2258[G5713] highly displeasedG2371[G5723] with them of TyreG5183 andG2532 SidonG4606: butG1161 they cameG3918[G5713] with one accordG3661 toG4314 himG846, andG2532, having madeG3982 BlastusG986 the king'sG935 chamberlainG1909[G2846] their friendG3982[G5660], desiredG154[G5710] peaceG1515; becauseG1223 theirG846 countryG5561 was nourishedG5142[G5745] byG575 the king's countryG937. [20]Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, but they assembled together and came to him, and they appealed to Blas'tus, the king's chamberlain, and asked him that they might have peace, because their country was dependent upon the kingdom of Herod for food supplies.
[21]AndG1161 upon a setG5002 dayG2250 HerodG2264, arrayedG1746[G5671] in royalG937 apparelG2066, satG2523[G5660] uponG1909 his throneG968, andG2532 made an orationG1215[G5707] untoG4314 themG846. [21]Upon the set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon the throne and addressed the assembly.
[22]AndG1161 the peopleG1218 gave a shoutG2019[G5707], saying, It is the voiceG5456 of a godG2316, andG2532 notG3756 of a manG444. [22]And all the people shouted, saying, This sounds like the voice of God speaking and not that of a man.
[23]AndG1161 immediatelyG3916 the angelG32 of the LordG2962 smoteG3960[G5656] himG846, becauseG473[G3739] he gaveG1325[G5656] notG3756 GodG2316 the gloryG1391: andG2532 he wasG1096[G5637] eaten of wormsG4662, and gave up the ghostG1634.[G5656] [23]And because he did not give the glory to God, in that very hour an angel of the LORD smote him, and he was eaten by disease and died.
[24]ButG1161 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 grewG837[G5707] andG2532 multipliedG4129.[G5712] [24]But the gospel of God continued to be preached and to reach many.
[25]AndG1161 BarnabasG921 andG2532 SaulG4569 returnedG5290[G5656] fromG1537 JerusalemG2419, when they had fulfilledG4137[G5660] their ministryG1248, andG2532 took with themG4838[G5631] JohnG2491, whose surname wasG1941[G5685] MarkG3138. [25]Bar'na-bas and Saul, after they had fulfilled their ministry, returned from Jerusalem to An'ti-och, and took with them John whose surname was Mark.
