| [1]AND it came to pass, after we separated from them, we sailed a straight course to the Island of Co'os, and the following day we arrived at Rhodes, and from thence to Pat'a-ra: |
[1]Ὡς δὲ ἐγένετο ἀναχθῆναι ἡμᾶς ἀποσπασθέντας ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν, εὐθυδρομήσαντες ἤλθομεν εἰς τὴν Κῶ, τῇ δὲ ἑξῆς εἰς τὴν ῾Ρόδον, κἀκεῖθεν εἰς Πάταρα. |
| [2]And we found there a ship sailing to Pheni'cia, and we went on board, and set forth. |
[2]καὶ εὑρόντες πλοῖον διαπερῶν εἰς Φοινίκην ἐπιβάντες ἀνήχθημεν. |
| [3]Then we reached the Island of Cyprus, and passed it on the left hand, and sailed to for there the ship was to unload her cargo. |
[3]ἀναφανέντες δὲ τὴν Κύπρον καὶ καταλιπόντες αὐτὴν εὐώνυμον ἐπλέομεν εἰς Συρίαν, καὶ κατήχθημεν εἰς Τύρον· ἐκεῖσε γὰρ ἦν τὸ πλοῖον ἀποφορτιζόμενον τὸν γόμον. |
| [4]And because we found disciples there, we stayed with them seven days: and every day they said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem. |
[4]καὶ ἀνευρόντες τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐπεμείναμεν αὐτοῦ ἡμέρας ἑπτά· οἵτινες τῷ Παύλῳ ἔλεγον διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος μὴ ἀναβαίνειν εἰς ῾Ιεροσόλυμα. |
| [5]After these days, we departed on our journey, and they all escorted us on our way with their wives and children, till we were out of the city: then they knelt down by the seaside and prayed; |
[5]ὅτε δὲ ἐγένετο ἡμᾶς ἐξαρτίσαι τὰς ἡμέρας, ἐξελθόντες ἐπορευόμεθα προπεμπόντων ἡμᾶς πάντων σὺν γυναιξὶ καὶ τέκνοις ἕως ἔξω τῆς πόλεως, καὶ θέντες τὰ γόνατα ἐπὶ τὸν αἰγιαλὸν προσηυξάμεθα, |
| [6]And when we had kissed one another good-bye, we took ship; and they returned to their homes. |
[6]καὶ ἀσπασάμενοι ἀλλήλους ἐπέβημεν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον, ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς τὰ ἴδια. |
| [7]We sailed from Tyre and arrived at the city of Ak-ka (Ptol-e-ma'is), and we saluted the brethren who were there, and tarried with them a day. |
[7]῾Ημεῖς δὲ τὸν πλοῦν διανύσαντες ἀπὸ Τύρου κατηντήσαμεν εἰς Πτολεμαΐδα, καὶ ἀσπασάμενοι τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἐμείναμεν ἡμέραν μίαν παρ᾿ αὐτοῖς. |
| [8]On the next day we departed and came to Caes-a-re'a: and we went in and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven. |
[8]τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἐξελθόντες ἤλθομεν εἰς Καισάρειαν, καὶ εἰσελθόντες εἰς τὸν οἶκον Φιλίππου τοῦ εὐαγγελιστοῦ, ὄντος ἐκ τῶν ἑπτά, ἐμείναμεν παρ᾿ αὐτῷ. |
| [9]He had four daughters, virgins, who prophesied. |
[9]τούτῳ δὲ ἦσαν θυγατέρες παρθένοι τέσσαρες προφητεύουσαι. |
| [10]And as we were there many days, there came down from Judaea a prophet named Ag'a-bus. |
[10]ἐπιμενόντων δὲ ἡμῶν ἡμέρας πλείους κατῆλθέ τις ἀπὸ τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας προφήτης ὀνόματι ῎Αγαβος, |
| [11]And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own feet and hands, and said, Thus says the Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owns this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. |
[11]καὶ ἐλθὼν πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ ἄρας τὴν ζώνην τοῦ Παύλου, δήσας τε αὐτοῦ τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας εἶπε· τάδε λέγει τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ῞Αγιον· τὸν ἄνδρα οὗ ἐστιν ἡ ζώνη αὕτη, οὕτω δήσουσιν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ οἱ ᾿Ιουδαῖοι καὶ παραδώσουσιν εἰς χεῖρας ἐθνῶν. |
| [12]And when we had heard these words, both we and the natives of the place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. |
[12]ὡς δὲ ἠκούσαμεν ταῦτα, παρεκαλοῦμεν ἡμεῖς τε καὶ οἱ ἐντόπιοι τοῦ μὴ ἀναβαίνειν αὐτὸν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλήμ. |
| [13]Then Paul answered and said, Why do you weep and break my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem, for the sake of the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. |
[13]ἀπεκρίθη τε ὁ Παῦλος· τί ποιεῖτε κλαίοντες καὶ συνθρύπτοντές μου τὴν καρδίαν; ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐ μόνον δεθῆναι, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀποθανεῖν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ ἑτοίμως ἔχω ὑπὲρ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ Κυρίου ᾿Ιησοῦ. |
| [14]And when he would not listen to us, we ceased, saying, Let the will of our LORD be done. |
[14]μὴ πειθομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἡσυχάσαμεν εἰπόντες· τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Κυρίου γινέσθω. |
| [15]After those days, we made our preparations and went up to Jerusalem. |
[15]Μετὰ δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας ταύτας ἐπισκευασάμενοι ἀνεβαίνομεν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλήμ· |
| [16]And there came with us some of the disciples from Caes-a-re'a, bringing with them a brother who was among the first converts, named Mna'son, a native of Cyprus, who had before received us at his house. |
[16]συνῆλθον δὲ καὶ τῶν μαθητῶν ἀπὸ Καισαρείας σὺν ἡμῖν, ἄγοντες παρ᾿ ᾧ ξενισθῶμεν Μνάσωνί τινι Κυπρίῳ, ἀρχαίῳ μαθητῇ. |
| [17]When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brethren welcomed us gladly. |
[17]Γενομένων δὲ ἡμῶν εἰς ῾Ιεροσόλυμα ἀσμένως ἐδέξαντο ἡμᾶς οἱ ἀδελφοί. |
| [18]And the next day when all the elders were present we went in with Paul unto James. |
[18]τῇ δὲ ἐπιούσῃ εἰσῄει ὁ Παῦλος σὺν ἡμῖν πρὸς ᾿Ιάκωβον, πάντες τε παρεγένοντο οἱ πρεσβύτεροι. |
| [19]And when we had saluted them, Paul told them in successive order everything that God had done among the Gentiles by his ministry. |
[19]καὶ ἀσπασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἐξηγεῖτο καθ᾿ ἓν ἕκαστον ὧν ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι διὰ τῆς διακονίας αὐτοῦ. |
| [20]And when they heard it, they glorified God, and said to Paul, Our brother, see how many thousands there are in Judaea who are believers; and they are all zealous of the law; |
[20]οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες ἐδόξαζον τὸν Κύριον, εἶπόν τε αὐτῷ· θεωρεῖς, ἀδελφέ, πόσαι μυριάδες εἰσὶν ᾿Ιουδαίων τῶν πεπιστευκότων, καὶ πάντες ζηλωταὶ τοῦ νόμου ὑπάρχουσι. |
| [21]But they have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake the law of Moses, stating that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to follow after the customs of the law. |
[21]κατηχήθησαν δὲ περὶ σοῦ ὅτι ἀποστασίαν διδάσκεις ἀπὸ Μωϋσέως τοὺς κατὰ τὰ ἔθνη πάντας ᾿Ιουδαίους, λέγων μὴ περιτέμνειν αὐτοὺς τὰ τέκνα μηδὲ τοῖς ἔθεσι περιπατεῖν. |
| [22]Now, therefore, they have heard that you have come here. |
[22]τί οὖν ἐστι; πάντως δεῖ πλῆθος συνελθεῖν· ἀκούσονται γὰρ ὅτι ἐλήλυθας. |
| [23]Do, therefore, what we tell you: We have four men who have vowed to purify themselves; |
[23]τοῦτο οὖν ποίησον ὅ σοι λέγομεν· εἰσὶν ἡμῖν ἄνδρες τέσσαρες εὐχὴν ἔχοντες ἐφ᾿ ἑαυτῶν· |
| [24]Take them and go purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses so that they may shave their heads: then every one will know that what has been said against you is false, and that you yourself have fulfilled the law and obey it. |
[24]τούτους παραλαβὼν ἁγνίσθητι σὺν αὐτοῖς καὶ δαπάνησον ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς ἵνα ξυρήσωνται τὴν κεφαλήν, καὶ γνῶσι πάντες ὅτι ὧν κατήχηνται περὶ σοῦ οὐδέν ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ στοιχεῖς καὶ αὐτὸς τὸν νόμον φυλάσσων. |
| [25]As for the believers amongst the Gentiles, we have written that they should abstain from the things sacrificed to idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood. |
[25]περὶ δὲ τῶν πεπιστευκότων ἐθνῶν ἡμεῖς ἐπεστείλαμεν κρίναντες μηδὲν τοιοῦτον τηρεῖν αὐτούς, εἰ μὴ φυλάσσεσθαι αὐτοὺς τό τε εἰδωλόθυτον καὶ τὸ αἷμα καὶ πνικτὸν καὶ πορνείαν. |
| [26]Then Paul took the men and on the next day he was purified with them and then he entered into the temple, informing them how to complete the days of purification, until the gift of every one of them was offered. |
[26]τότε ὁ Παῦλος παραλαβὼν τοὺς ἄνδρας τῇ ἐχομένῃ ἡμέρᾳ σὺν αὐτοῖς ἁγνισθεὶς εἰσῄει εἰς τὸ ἱερόν, διαγγέλλων τὴν ἐκπλήρωσιν τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῦ ἁγνισμοῦ, ἕως οὗ προσηνέχθη ὑπὲρ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου αὐτῶν ἡ προσφορά. |
| [27]And when the seventh day approached, and the Jews from Asia Minor saw him in the temple, they stirred up all the people against him and laid hands on him, |
[27]῾Ως δὲ ἔμελλον αἱ ἑπτὰ ἡμέραι συντελεῖσθαι, οἱ ἀπὸ τῆς ᾿Ασίας ᾿Ιουδαῖοι θεασάμενοι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ συνέχεον πάντα τὸν ὄχλον, καὶ ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν |
| [28]And cried out, saying, Men of Israel, help: This is the man who teaches everywhere against our people, against the law, and against this place; and further, he has brought Syr-i-ans into the temple, and has defiled this holy place. |
[28]κράζοντες· ἄνδρες ᾿Ισραηλῖται, βοηθεῖτε· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ κατὰ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τοῦ νόμου καὶ τοῦ τόπου τούτου πάντας πανταχοῦ διδάσκων· ἔτι τε καὶ ῞Ελληνας εἰσήγαγεν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ κεκοίνωκε τὸν ἅγιον τόπον τοῦτον· |
| [29]For they had previously seen Troph'imus, the E-phe'sian, with him in the city, and they thought he had entered into the temple with Paul. |
[29]ἦσαν γὰρ ἑωρακότες Τρόφιμον τὸν ᾿Εφέσιον ἐν τῇ πόλει σὺν αὐτῷ, ὃν ἐνόμιζον ὅτι εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν εἰσήγαγεν ὁ Παῦλος. |
| [30]So the whole city was in a tumult, and all the people ran together; they seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple; and the doors were immediately shut. |
[30]ἐκινήθη τε ἡ πόλις ὅλη καὶ ἐγένετο συνδρομὴ τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ ἐπιλαβόμενοι τοῦ Παύλου εἷλκον αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἱεροῦ, καὶ εὐθέως ἐκλείσθησαν αἱ θύραι. |
| [31]And as the mob sought to kill him, the news reached the captain of the company, that all the city was in an uproar. |
[31]ζητούντων δὲ αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἀνέβη φάσις τῷ χιλιάρχῳ τῆς σπείρης ὅτι ὅλη συγκέχυται ῾Ιερουσαλήμ· |
| [32]He immediately took a centurion and many soldiers, and ran down to them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they ceased beating Paul. |
[32]ὃς ἐξαυτῆς παραλαβὼν στρατιώτας καὶ ἑκατοντάρχους κατέδραμεν ἐπ᾿ αὐτούς. οἱ δὲ ἰδόντες τὸν χιλίαρχον καὶ τοὺς στρατιώτας ἐπαύσαντο τύπτοντες τὸν Παῦλον. |
| [33]Then the chief captain came near him and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains. Then he inquired, Who is he and what has he done? |
[33]ἐγγίσας δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκέλευσε δεθῆναι ἁλύσεσι δυσί, καὶ ἐπυνθάνετο τίς ἂν εἴη καὶ τί ἐστι πεποιηκώς. |
| [34]And some of the mob cried against him one thing, some another: and because of their confusion he was unable to know what was true, so he commanded him to be taken to headquarters. |
[34]ἄλλοι δὲ ἄλλο τι ἐβόων ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ· μὴ δυνάμενος δὲ γνῶναι τὸ ἀσφαλὲς διὰ τὸν θόρυβον, ἐκέλευσεν ἄγεσθαι αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν. |
| [35]And when Paul reached the stairs, the soldiers bore him because of the violence of the people. |
[35]ὅτε δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀναβαθμούς, συνέβη βαστάζεσθαι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῶν στρατιωτῶν διὰ τὴν βίαν τοῦ ὄχλου· |
| [36]For a great many people followed after, crying, and saying, Away with him. |
[36]ἠκολούθει γὰρ τὸ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ κράζον· αἶρε αὐτόν. |
| [37]And as Paul was about to be led into headquarters, he said to the chief captain, May I speak to you? The captain said, Can you speak Greek? |
[37]Μέλλων τε εἰσάγεσθαι εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν ὁ Παῦλος λέγει τῷ χιλιάρχῳ· εἰ ἔξεστί μοι εἰπεῖν τι πρός σε; ὁ δὲ ἔφη· ῾Ελληνιστὶ γινώσκεις; |
| [38]Are you not that Egyptian who some time ago created disturbances and led out into the desert four thousand malefactors? |
[38]οὐκ ἄρα σὺ εἶ ὁ Αἰγύπτιος ὁ πρὸ τούτων τῶν ἡμερῶν ἀναστατώσας καὶ ἐξαγαγὼν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους ἄνδρας τῶν σικαρίων; |
| [39]But Paul said, I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cili'cia, a citizen of a well-known city: I beg you, permit me to speak to the people. |
[39]εἶπε δὲ ὁ Παῦλος· ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος μέν εἰμι ᾿Ιουδαῖος Ταρσεύς, τῆς Κιλικίας οὐκ ἀσήμου πόλεως πολίτης· δέομαι δέ σου, ἐπίτρεψόν μοι λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν λαόν. |
| [40]And when he had given him permission, Paul stood on the stairs and beckoned with his hand to them. And when they were quiet, he spoke to them in the Hebrew (Aramaic) tongue and said to them. |
[40]ἐπιτρέψαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ Παῦλος ἑστὼς ἐπὶ τῶν ἀναβαθμῶν κατέσεισε τῇ χειρὶ τῷ λαῷ· πολλῆς δὲ σιγῆς γενομένης προσεφώνησε τῇ ῾Εβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ λέγων· |
