The King James Version (w/Strong's)
KJV+
Young's Literal Translation
YLT
[1]RememberH2142[H8798] now thy CreatorH1254[H8802] in the daysH3117 of thy youthH979, while the evilH7451 daysH3117 comeH935[H8799] not, nor the yearsH8141 draw nighH5060[H8689], when thou shalt sayH559[H8799], I have no pleasure in themH2656; [1]Remember also thy Creators in days of thy youth, While that the evil days come not, Nor the years have arrived, that thou sayest, `I have no pleasure in them.'
[2]While the sunH8121, or the lightH216, or the moonH3394, or the starsH3556, be not darkenedH2821[H8799], nor the cloudsH5645 returnH7725[H8804] afterH310 the rainH1653: [2]While that the sun is not darkened, and the light, And the moon, and the stars, And the thick clouds returned after the rain.
[3]In the dayH3117 when the keepersH8104[H8802] of the houseH1004 shall trembleH2111[H8799], and the strongH2428 menH582 shall bowH5791[H8694] themselves, and the grindersH2912[H8802] ceaseH988[H8804] because they are fewH4591[H8765], and those that look outH7200[H8802] of the windowsH699 H2821be darkenedH8804 [3]In the day that keepers of the house tremble, And men of strength have bowed themselves, And grinders have ceased, because they have become few. And those looking out at the windows have become dim,
[4]And the doorsH1817 shall be shutH5462[H8795] in the streetsH7784, when the soundH6963 of the grindingH2913 is lowH8217, and he shall rise upH6965[H8799] at the voiceH6963 of the birdH6833, and all the daughtersH1323 of musickH7892 H7817shall be brought lowH8735 [4]And doors have been shut in the street. When the noise of the grinding is low, And [one] riseth at the voice of the bird, And all daughters of song are bowed down.
[5]Also when they shall be afraidH3372[H8799] of that which is highH1364, and fearsH2849 shall be in the wayH1870, and the almond treeH8247 shall flourishH5006[H8686], and the grasshopperH2284 shall be a burdenH5445[H8691], and desireH35 shall failH6565[H8686]: because manH120 goethH1980[H8802] to his longH5769 homeH1004, and the mournersH5594[H8802] go aboutH5437[H8804] the streetsH7784: [5]Also of that which is high they are afraid, And of the low places in the way, And the almond-tree is despised, And the grasshopper is become a burden, And want is increased, For man is going unto his home age-during, And the mourners have gone round through the street.
[6]Or everH3808 the silverH3701 cordH2256 be loosedH7576[H8735][H8675][H7368][H8735], or the goldenH2091 bowlH1543 be brokenH7533[H8799], or the pitcherH3537 be brokenH7665[H8735] at the fountainH4002, or the wheelH1534 brokenH7533[H8738] at the cisternH953. [6]While that the silver cord is not removed, And the golden bowl broken, And the pitcher broken by the fountain, And the wheel broken at the well.
[7]Then shall the dustH6083 returnH7725[H8799] to the earthH776 as it was: and the spiritH7307 shall returnH7725[H8799] unto GodH430 who gaveH5414 itH8804. [7]And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.
[8]VanityH1892 of vanitiesH1892, saithH559[H8804] the preacherH6953; all is vanityH1892. [8]Vanity of vanities, said the preacher, the whole [is] vanity.
[9]And moreoverH3148, because the preacherH6953 was wiseH2450, he still taughtH3925[H8765] the peopleH5971 knowledgeH1847; yea, he gave good heedH239[H8765], and sought outH2713[H8765], and set in orderH8626[H8765] manyH7235[H8687] proverbsH4912. [9]And further, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge, and gave ear, and sought out -- he made right many similes.
[10]The preacherH6953 soughtH1245[H8765] to find outH4672[H8800] acceptableH2656 wordsH1697: and that which was writtenH3789[H8803] was uprightH3476, even wordsH1697 of truthH571. [10]The preacher sought to find out pleasing words, and, written [by] the upright, words of truth.
[11]The wordsH1697 of the wiseH2450 are as goadsH1861, and as nailsH4930 fastenedH5193[H8803] by the mastersH1167 of assembliesH627, which are givenH5414[H8738] from oneH259 shepherdH7462.[H8802] [11]Words of the wise [are] as goads, and as fences planted [by] the masters of collections, they have been given by one shepherd.
[12]And furtherH3148, by theseH1992, my sonH1121, be admonishedH2094[H8734]: of makingH6213[H8800] manyH7235[H8687] booksH5612 there is no endH7093; and muchH7235[H8687] studyH3854 is a wearinessH3024 of the fleshH1320. [12]And further, from these, my son, be warned; the making of many books hath no end, and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh.
[13]Let us hearH8085[H8799] the conclusionH5490 of the whole matterH1697: FearH3372[H8798] GodH430, and keepH8104[H8798] his commandmentsH4687: for this is the whole duty of manH120. [13]The end of the whole matter let us hear: -- `Fear God, and keep His commands, for this [is] the whole of man.
[14]For GodH430 shall bringH935[H8686] every workH4639 into judgmentH4941, with every secret thingH5956[H8737], whether it be goodH2896, or whether it be evilH7451. [14]For every work doth God bring into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether good or bad.'
