[3]I have sought in my heart to draw out with wine my appetite, (and my heart leading in wisdom), and to take hold on folly till that I see where [is] this -- the good to the sons of man of that which they do under the heavens, the number of the days of their lives. |

[4]I made great my works, I builded for me houses, I planted for me vineyards. |

[5]I made for me gardens and paradises, and I planted in them trees of every fruit. |

[6]I made for me pools of water, to water from them a forest shooting forth trees. |

[7]I got men-servants, and maid-servants, and sons of the house were to me; also, I had much substance -- herd and flock -- above all who had been before me in Jerusalem. |

[8]I gathered for me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces. I prepared for me men-singers and women-singers, and the luxuries of the sons of man -- a wife and wives. |
| [9]So I was greatH1431[H8804], and increasedH3254[H8689] more than all that were beforeH6440 me in JerusalemH3389: also my wisdomH2451 remainedH5975 with meH8804. |
[9]And I became great, and increased above every one who had been before me in Jerusalem; also, my wisdom stood with me. |
| [10]And whatsoever mine eyesH5869 desiredH7592[H8804] I keptH680[H8804] not from them, I withheldH4513[H8804] not my heartH3820 from any joyH8057; for my heartH3820 rejoicedH8056 in all my labourH5999: and this was my portionH2506 of all my labourH5999. |
[10]And all that mine eyes asked I kept not back from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced because of all my labour, and this hath been my portion, from all my labour, |

[11]and I have looked on all my works that my hands have done, and on the labour that I have laboured to do, and lo, the whole [is] vanity and vexation of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun! |
| [12]And I turnedH6437[H8804] myself to beholdH7200[H8800] wisdomH2451, and madnessH1947, and follyH5531: for what can the manH120 do that comethH935[H8799] afterH310 the kingH4428? even that which hath been alreadyH3528 doneH6213.[H8804] |
[12]And I turned to see wisdom, and madness, and folly, but what [is] the man who cometh after the king? that which [is] already -- they have done it! |
| [13]Then I sawH7200[H8804] thatH3426 wisdomH2451 excellethH3504 follyH5531, as far as lightH216 excellethH3504 darknessH2822. |
[13]And I saw that there is an advantage to wisdom above folly, like the advantage of the light above the darkness. |
| [14]The wise man'sH2450 eyesH5869 are in his headH7218; but the foolH3684 walkethH1980[H8802] in darknessH2822: and I myself perceivedH3045[H8804] also that oneH259 eventH4745 happenethH7136 to them allH8799. |
[14]The wise! -- his eyes [are] in his head, and the fool in darkness is walking, and I also knew that one event happeneth with them all; |
| [15]ThenH227 saidH559[H8804] I in my heartH3820, As it happenethH4745 to the foolH3684, so it happenethH7136[H8799] even to meH1571; and why was I then moreH3148 wiseH2449[H8804]? Then I saidH1696[H8765] in my heartH3820, that this also is vanityH1892. |
[15]and I said in my heart, `As it happeneth with the fool, it happeneth also with me, and why am I then more wise?' And I spake in my heart, that also this [is] vanity: |
| [16]For there is no remembranceH2146 of the wiseH2450 more thanH5973 of the foolH3684 for everH5769; seeing that which nowH3528 is in the daysH3117 to comeH935[H8802] shall all be forgottenH7911[H8738]. And how diethH4191[H8799] the wiseH2450 man? as the foolH3684. |
[16]That there is no remembrance to the wise -- with the fool -- to the age, for that which [is] already, [in] the days that are coming is all forgotten, and how dieth the wise? with the fool! |
| [17]Therefore I hatedH8130[H8804] lifeH2416; because the workH4639 that is wroughtH6213[H8738] under the sunH8121 is grievousH7451 unto me: for all is vanityH1892 and vexationH7469 of spiritH7307. |
[17]And I have hated life, for sad to me [is] the work that hath been done under the sun, for the whole [is] vanity and vexation of spirit. |
| [18]Yea, I hatedH8130[H8804] all my labourH5999 which I had takenH6001 under the sunH8121: because I should leaveH3240[H8686] it unto the manH120 that shall be after meH310. |
[18]And I have hated all my labour that I labour at under the sun, because I leave it to a man who is after me. |
| [19]And who knowethH3045[H8802] whether he shall be a wiseH2450 man or a foolH5530? yet shall he have ruleH7980[H8799] over all my labourH5999 wherein I have labouredH5998[H8804], and wherein I have shewed myself wiseH2449[H8804] under the sunH8121. This is also vanityH1892. |
[19]And who knoweth whether he is wise or foolish? yet he doth rule over all my labour that I have laboured at, and that I have done wisely under the sun! this also [is] vanity. |
| [20]Therefore I went aboutH5437[H8804] to causeH2976 my heartH3820 to despairH2976[H8763] of all the labourH5999 which I tookH5998[H8804] under the sunH8121. |
[20]And I turned round to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour that I laboured at under the sun. |
| [21]For there isH3426 a manH120 whose labourH5999 is in wisdomH2451, and in knowledgeH1847, and in equityH3788; yet to a manH120 that hath not labouredH5998[H8804] therein shall he leaveH5414[H8799] it for his portionH2506. This also is vanityH1892 and a greatH7227 evilH7451. |
[21]For there is a man whose labour [is] in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity, and to a man who hath not laboured therein he giveth it -- his portion! Even this [is] vanity and a great evil. |
| [22]For what hathH1933[H8802] manH120 of all his labourH5999, and of the vexationH7475 of his heartH3820, whereinH1931 he hath labouredH6001 under the sunH8121? |
[22]For what hath been to a man by all his labour, and by the thought of his heart that he laboured at under the sun? |
| [23]For all his daysH3117 are sorrowsH4341, and his travailH6045 griefH3708; yea, his heartH3820 taketh not restH7901[H8804] in the nightH3915. This is also vanityH1892. |
[23]For all his days are sorrows, and his travail sadness; even at night his heart hath not lain down; this also [is] vanity. |
| [24]There is nothing betterH2896 for a manH120, than that he should eatH398[H8799] and drinkH8354[H8804], and that he should make his soulH5315 enjoyH7200[H8689] goodH2896 in his labourH5999. ThisH2090 also I sawH7200[H8804], that it was from the handH3027 of GodH430. |
[24]There is nothing good in a man who eateth, and hath drunk, and hath shewn his soul good in his labour. This also I have seen that it [is] from the hand of God. |
| [25]For who can eatH398[H8799], or who else can hastenH2363[H8799] hereunto, more than IH2351? |
[25]For who eateth and who hasteth out more than I? |
| [26]For God givethH5414[H8804] to a manH120 that is goodH2896 in his sightH6440 wisdomH2451, and knowledgeH1847, and joyH8057: but to the sinnerH2398[H8802] he givethH5414[H8804] travailH6045, to gatherH622[H8800] and to heap upH3664[H8800], that he may giveH5414[H8800] to him that is goodH2896 beforeH6440 GodH430. This also is vanityH1892 and vexationH7469 of spiritH7307. |
[26]For to a man who [is] good before Him, He hath given wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; and to a sinner He hath given travail, to gather and to heap up, to give to the good before God. Even this [is] vanity and vexation of spirit. |
