| [1]כי את כל זה נתתי אל לבי ולבור את כל זה אשר הצדיקים והחכמים ועבדיהם ביד האלהים גם אהבה גם שנאה אין יודע האדם־הכל לפניהם |
[1]I have surely given mine heart to all this, and to declare all this, that the just, and the wise, and their works are in the hand of God: and no man knoweth either love or hatred of all that is before them. |
| [2]הכל כאשר לכל מקרה אחד לצדיק ולרשע לטוב ולטהור ולטמא ולזבח ולאשר איננו זבח כטוב כחטא־הנשבע כאשר שבועה ירא |
[2]All things come alike to all: and the same condition is to the just and to the wicked, to the good and to the pure, and to the polluted, and to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner, he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. |
| [3]זה רע בכל אשר נעשה תחת השמש־כי מקרה אחד לכל וגם לב בני האדם מלא רע והוללות בלבבם בחייהם ואחריו אל המתים |
[3]This is evil among all that is done under the sun, that there is one condition to all, and also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their hearts whiles they live, and after that, they go to the dead. |
| [4]כי מי אשר יבחר [Q: יחבר] אל כל החיים יש בטחון כי לכלב חי הוא טוב מן האריה המת |
[4]Surely whosoever is joined to all the living, there is hope: for it is better to a living dog, than to a dead lion. |
| [5]כי החיים יודעים שימתו והמתים אינם יודעים מאומה ואין עוד להם שכר־כי נשכח זכרם |
[5]For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing at all: neither have they any more a reward: for their remembrance is forgotten. |
| [6]גם אהבתם גם שנאתם גם קנאתם כבר אבדה וחלק אין להם עוד לעולם בכל אשר נעשה תחת השמש |
[6]Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy is now perished, and they have no more portion forever, in all that is done under the sun. |
| [7]לך אכל בשמחה לחמך ושתה בלב טוב יינך כי כבר רצה האלהים את מעשיך |
[7]Go, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a cheerful heart: for God now accepteth thy works. |
| [8]בכל עת יהיו בגדיך לבנים ושמן על ראשך אל יחסר |
[8]At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oil be lacking upon thine head. |
| [9]ראה חיים עם אשה אשר אהבת כל ימי חיי הבלך אשר נתן לך תחת השמש כל ימי הבלך כי הוא חלקך בחיים ובעמלך אשר אתה עמל תחת השמש |
[9]Rejoice with the wife whom thou hast loved all the days of the life of thy vanity, which God hath given thee under the sun all the days of thy vanity: for this is thy portion in the life, and in thy travail wherein thou laborest under the sun. |
| [10]כל אשר תמצא ידך לעשות בכחך־עשה כי אין מעשה וחשבון ודעת וחכמה בשאול אשר אתה הלך שמה |
[10]All that thine hand shall find to do, do it with all thy power: for there is neither work nor invention, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest. |
| [11]שבתי וראה תחת השמש כי לא לקלים המרוץ ולא לגבורים המלחמה וגם לא לחכמים לחם וגם לא לנבנים עשר וגם לא לידעים חן כי עת ופגע יקרה את כלם |
[11]I returned, and I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor also riches to men of understanding, neither yet favor to men of knowledge: but time and chance cometh to them all. |
| [12]כי גם לא ידע האדם את עתו כדגים שנאחזים במצודה רעה וכצפרים האחזות בפח כהם יוקשים בני האדם לעת רעה כשתפול עליהם פתאם |
[12]For neither doth man know his time, but as the fishes which are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare: so are the children of men snared in the evil time when it falleth upon them suddenly. |
| [13]גם זה ראיתי חכמה תחת השמש וגדולה היא אלי |
[13]I have also seen this wisdom under the sun, and it is great unto me. |
| [14]עיר קטנה ואנשים בה מעט ובא אליה מלך גדול וסבב אתה ובנה עליה מצודים גדלים |
[14]A little city and few men in it, and a great king came against it, and compassed it about, and builded forts against it. |
| [15]ומצא בה איש מסכן חכם ומלט הוא את העיר בחכמתו ואדם לא זכר את האיש המסכן ההוא |
[15]And there was found therein a poor and wise man, and he delivered the city by his wisdom: but none remembered this poor man. |
| [16]ואמרתי אני טובה חכמה מגבורה וחכמת המסכן בזויה ודבריו אינם נשמעים |
[16]Then said I, Better is wisdom than strength: yet the wisdom of the poor is despised, and his words are not heard. |
| [17]דברי חכמים בנחת נשמעים־מזעקת מושל בכסילים |
[17]The words of the wise are more heard in quietness, than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. |
| [18]טובה חכמה מכלי קרב וחוטא אחד יאבד טובה הרבה |
[18]Better is wisdom than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. |
