[1]BE therefore God-like, as beloved chil dren. [1]Estote ergo imitatores Dei, sicut filii carissimi,
[2]And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet example. [2]et ambulate in dilectione, sicut et Christus dilexit nos, et tradidit semetipsum pro nobis, oblationem et hostiam Deo in odorem suavitatis.
[3]But let not immorality or any uncleanness or covetousness be heard of among you, as becomes saints; [3]Fornicatio autem, et omnis immunditia, aut avaritia, nec nominetur in vobis, sicut decet sanctos:
[4]Neither cursing, nor foolish words, nor insults, nor words of flattery, none of which are necessary: but instead of these, let thanks be offered. [4]aut turpitudo, aut stultiloquium, aut scurrilitas, quæ ad rem non pertinet: sed magis gratiarum actio.
[5]You should know this: that no one guilty of fornication, or unclean person, or covetous man who serves idols, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. [5]Hoc enim scitote intelligentes: quod omnis fornicator, aut immundus, aut avarus, quod est idolorum servitus, non habet hæreditatem in regno Christi et Dei.
[6]Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things the anger of God comes on the children of disobedience. [6]Nemo vos seducat inanibus verbis: propter hæc enim venit ira Dei in filios diffidentiæ.
[7]Therefore do not be partakers with them. [7]Nolite ergo effici participes eorum.
[8]For previously you were ignorant, but now you have been enlightened by our LORD, and should live therefore like children of light. [8]Eratis enim aliquando tenebræ: nunc autem lux in Domino. Ut filii lucis ambulate:
[9]For the fruits of light are found in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth; [9]fructus enim lucis est in omni bonitate, et justitia, et veritate:
[10]And so you must discern that which is acceptable before our LORD. [10]probantes quid sit beneplacitum Deo:
[11]Have no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather condemn them. [11]et nolite communicare operibus infructuosis tenebrarum, magis autem redarguite.
[12]For it is a shame even to speak of the things that are done by them in secret. [12]Quæ enim in occulto fiunt ab ipsis, turpe est et dicere.
[13]For all things that are condemned are exposed by the light: and anything that is made manifest is light. [13]Omnia autem, quæ arguuntur, a lumine manifestantur: omne enim, quod manifestatur, lumen est.
[14]Therefore it is said: Awake thou that sleepest, and rise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. [14]Propter quod dicit: Surge qui dormis, et exsurge a mortuis, et illuminabit te Christus.
[15]Watch therefore, that you live a glorious life, not as foolish men, but as wise men, [15]Videte itaque, fratres, quomodo caute ambuletis: non quasi insipientes,
[16]Who take advantage of their opportunity, for these are difficult days. [16]sed ut sapientes: redimentes tempus, quoniam dies mali sunt.
[17]Wherefore do not lack wisdom, but understand what the will of God is. [17]Propterea nolite fieri imprudentes, sed intelligentes quæ sit voluntas Dei.
[18]And do not become drunk with wine, wherein is intemperance; but be filled with the Spirit, [18]Et nolite inebriari vino, in quo est luxuria, sed implemini Spiritu Sancto,
[19]Speaking to your souls in psalms and hymns, and in spiritual songs, sing with your heart to the LORD; [19]loquentes vobismetipsis in psalmis, et hymnis, et canticis spiritualibus, cantantes et psallentes in cordibus vestris Domino,
[20]Giving thanks always for all men to God the Father in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. [20]gratias agentes semper pro omnibus in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi Deo et Patri,
[21]Submit yourselves one to another in the love of Christ. [21]subjecti invicem in timore Christi.
[22]Wives submit yourselves to your husbands as to our LORD. [22]Mulieres viris suis subditæ sint, sicut Domino:
[23]For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of its body. [23]quoniam vir caput est mulieris, sicut Christus caput est Ecclesiæ: ipse, salvator corporis ejus.
[24]Therefore as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. [24]Sed sicut Ecclesia subjecta est Christo, ita et mulieres viris suis in omnibus.
[25]Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved his church, and gave himself for it; [25]Viri, diligite uxores vestras, sicut et Christus dilexit Ecclesiam, et seipsum tradidit pro ea,
[26]That he might sanctify and cleanse it, by the washing of water and by the word, [26]ut illam sanctificaret, mundans lavacro aquæ in verbo vitæ,
[27]In order to build for himself a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. [27]ut exhiberet ipse sibi gloriosam Ecclesiam, non habentem maculam, aut rugam, aut aliquid hujusmodi, sed ut sit sancta et immaculata.
[28]So should men love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. [28]Ita et viri debent diligere uxores suas ut corpora sua. Qui suam uxorem diligit, seipsum diligit.
[29]For no man ever yet hated his own body; but nourishes it and cherishes it, even as Christ does for his church. [29]Nemo enim umquam carnem suam odio habuit: sed nutrit et fovet eam, sicut et Christus Ecclesiam:
[30]For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. [30]quia membra sumus corporis ejus, de carne ejus et de ossibus ejus.
[31]For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. [31]Propter hoc relinquet homo patrem et matrem suam, et adhærebit uxori suæ, et erunt duo in carne una.
[32]This is a great mystery; but I speak concerning Christ and his church. [32]Sacramentum hoc magnum est, ego autem dico in Christo et in Ecclesia.
[33]Nevertheless, let every one of you so love his wife as himself, and the wife see that she reverence her husband. [33]Verumtamen et vos singuli, unusquisque uxorem suam sicut seipsum diligat: uxor autem timeat virum suum.
