Peshitta (Lamsa, 1933)
Pes(Lam)
[1]Now these are the laws, which thou shalt set before them: [1]NOW these are the judgments which you shall set before them.
[2]If thou buy an Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. [2]When you buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve you; and in the seventh year he shall go out free from your house without price.
[3]If he came himself alone, he shall go out himself alone: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. [3]If he came in single, he shall go out single; if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
[4]If his master hath given him a wife, and she hath born him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, but he shall go out himself alone. [4]If his master has given him a wife and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be his master's and he shall go out alone.
[5]But if the servant say thus, I love my master, my wife and my children, I will not go out free, [5]And if the servant shall say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free;
[6]Then his master shall bring him unto the judges, and set him to the door, or to the post, and his master shall bore his ear through with a awl, and he shall serve him forever. [6]Then his master shall bring him to the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or to the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever.
[7]Likewise if a man sell his daughter to be a servant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. [7]And when a man sells his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out free as the menservants do.
[8]If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he cause to buy her: he shall have no power to sell her to a strange people, seeing he despised her. [8]If her master hates her, so that he will not take her to himself as a wife, then he shall let her be redeemed; he shall have no authority to sell her to a foreign people, because he has dealt deceitfully with her.
[9]But if he hath betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her according to the custom of the daughters. [9]And if he takes her for wife to his son, then he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.
[10]If he take him another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her raiment, and recompense of her virginity. [10]If he takes to himself another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her clothes, and her conjugal rights.
[11]And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free, paying no money. [11]And if be does not these three things to her, then she shall go out free without price
[12]He that smiteth a man, and he die, shall die the death. [12]He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.
[13]And if a man hath not laid wait, but God hath offered him into his hand, then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. [13]But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee.
[14]But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbor to slay him with guile, thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. [14]But if a man ventures to attack his neighbor and slay him treacherously, you shall take him even from my altar to put him to death.
[15]Also he that smiteth his father or his mother, shall die the death. [15]He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
[16]And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, if it be found with him, shall die the death. [16]He who steals a person and sells him, or he is found in his possession, he shall surely be put to death.
[17]And he that curseth his father or his mother, shall die the death. [17]He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
[18]When men also strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but lieth in bed, [18]And if two men quarrel, and one strikes another with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but is put to bed from the injury:
[19]If he rise again and walk without upon his staff, then shall he that smote him go quit, save only he shall bear his charges for his resting, and shall pay for his healing. [19]If he rises again and walks in the street with his staff, then the one who struck him shall be acquitted, except that he shall pay for the loss of his time and the physician's fee.
[20]And if a man smite his servant, or his maid with a rod, and he die under his hand, he shall be surely punished. [20]And if a man strikes his servant, or his maid with a staff, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished.
[21]But if he continue a day, or two days, he shall not be punished: for he is his money. [21]But if the victim is well after a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his property
[22]Also if men strive and hurt a woman with child, so that her child depart from her, and death follow not, he shall be surely punished according as the woman's husband shall appoint him, or he shall pay as the judges determine. [22]If two men quarrel, and strike a woman with child so that she miscarries, and yet no mischief follow; he shall surely pay a fine such as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
[23]But if death follow, then thou shalt pay life for life, [23]But if any mischief follow, then you shall give life for life,
[24]Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, [24]Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
[25]Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. [25]Burning for burning, wound for wound, slap for slap.
[26]And if a man smite his servant in the eye, or his maid in the eye, and hath perished it, he shall let him go free for his eye. [26]land if a man strike the eye of his servant or the eye of his maid, and injure it, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.
[27]Also if he smite out his servant's tooth, or his maid's tooth, he shall let him go out free for his tooth. [27]And if he knocks out the tooth of his manservant or the tooth of his maidservant, he must let him go free for his tooth's sake.
[28]If an ox gore a man or a woman, that he die, the ox shall be stoned to death, and his flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner of the ox shall go quit. [28]If an ox gores a man or a woman that he or she die; then the ox shall be surely stoned and its meat shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be blameless.
[29]If the ox were wont to push in times past, and it hath been told his master, and he hath not kept him, and after he killeth a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and his owner shall die also. [29]But if the ox were known to be in the habit of goring in the past, and its owner has been warned, and he has not kept it in, and it kills a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death.
[30]If there be set to him a sum of money, then he shall pay the ransom of his life, whatsoever shall be laid upon him. [30]But if a sum of money is imposed on him, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatever they ask from him.
[31]Whether he hath gored a son or gored a daughter, he shall be judged after the same manner. [31]Whether the ox has gored a son or a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him.
[32]If the ox gore a servant or a maid, he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned. [32]If the ox gores a manservant or a maidservant, the owner shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver and the ox shall be stoned.
[33]And when a man shall open a well, or when he shall dig a pit and cover it not, and an ox or an ass fall therein, [33]And if a man shall open a wheat pit or a man shall dig a well, and not cover them, and an ox or an ass fall into it;
[34]The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money to the owners thereof, but the dead beast shall be his. [34]The owner of the pit shall pay money to the owner of the animal, and the dead animal shall be his.
[35]And if a man's ox hurt his neighbor's ox that he die, then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money thereof, and the dead ox also they shall divide. [35]And if one man's ox gores another man's ox so that it dies; then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money; and the dead ox also they shall divide.
[36]Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in times past, and his master hath not kept him, he shall pay ox for ox, but the dead shall be his own. [36]But if it be known that the ox has been in the habit of goring, and his owner has not kept it in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead animal shall belong to him
