[1]And afterwardH310 MosesH4872 and AaronH175 went inH935[H8804], and toldH559[H8799] PharaohH6547, Thus saithH559[H8804] the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, Let my peopleH5971 goH7971[H8761], that they may hold a feastH2287[H8799] unto me in the wildernessH4057. [1]And after this went in Moses and Aaron to Pharao, and they said to him, These things says the Lord God of Israel, Send my people away, that they may keep a feast to me in the wilderness.
[2]And PharaohH6547 saidH559[H8799], Who is the LORDH3068, that I should obeyH8085[H8799] his voiceH6963 to let IsraelH3478 goH7971[H8763]? I knowH3045[H8804] not the LORDH3068, neither will I let IsraelH3478 goH7971.[H8762] [2]And Pharao said, Who is he that I should hearken to his voice, so that I should send away the children of Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.
[3]And they saidH559[H8799], The GodH430 of the HebrewsH5680 hath metH7122[H8738] with us: let us goH3212[H8799], we pray thee, threeH7969 days'H3117 journeyH1870 into the desertH4057, and sacrificeH2076[H8799] unto the LORDH3068 our GodH430; lest he fallH6293[H8799] upon us with pestilenceH1698, or with the swordH2719. [3]And they say to him, The God of the Hebrews has called us to him: we will go therefore a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest at any time death or slaughter happen to us.
[4]And the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 saidH559[H8799] unto them, Wherefore do ye, MosesH4872 and AaronH175, letH6544[H8686] the peopleH5971 from their worksH4639? getH3212[H8798] you unto your burdensH5450. [4]And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, turn the people from their works? depart each of you to your works.
[5]And PharaohH6547 saidH559[H8799], Behold, the peopleH5971 of the landH776 now are manyH7227, and ye make them restH7673[H8689] from their burdensH5450. [5]And Pharao said, Behold now, the people is very numerous; let us not then give them rest from their work.
[6]And PharaohH6547 commandedH6680[H8762] the same dayH3117 the taskmastersH5065[H8802] of the peopleH5971, and their officersH7860[H8802], sayingH559,[H8800] [6]And Pharao gave orders to the task-masters of the people and the accountants, saying,
[7]Ye shall no moreH3254[H8686] giveH5414[H8800] the peopleH5971 strawH8401 to makeH3835[H8800] brickH3843, as heretoforeH8032[H8543]: let them goH3212[H8799] and gatherH7197[H8782] straw for themselvesH8401. [7]Ye shall no longer give straw to the people for brick-making as yesterday and the third day; but let them go themselves, and collect straw for themselves.
[8]And the taleH4971 of the bricksH3843, which they did makeH6213[H8802] heretoforeH8032[H8543], ye shall layH7760[H8799] upon them; ye shall not diminishH1639[H8799] ought thereof: for they be idleH7503[H8737]; therefore they cryH6817[H8802], sayingH559[H8800], Let us goH3212[H8799] and sacrificeH2076[H8799] to our GodH430. [8]And thou shalt impose on them daily the rate of brick-making which they perform: thou shalt not abate anything, for they are idle; therefore have they cried, saying, Let us arise and do sacrifice to our God.
[9]Let there more workH5656 be laidH3513[H8799] upon the menH582, that they may labourH6213[H8799] therein; and let them not regardH8159[H8799] vainH8267 wordsH1697. [9]Let the works of these men be made grievous, and let them care for these things, and not care for vain words.
[10]And the taskmastersH5065[H8802] of the peopleH5971 went outH3318[H8799], and their officersH7860[H8802], and they spakeH559[H8799] to the peopleH5971, sayingH559[H8800], Thus saithH559[H8804] PharaohH6547, I will not giveH5414[H8802] you strawH8401. [10]And the taskmasters and the accountants hastened them, and they spoke to the people, saying, thus says Pharao, I will give you straw no longer.
[11]GoH3212[H8798] ye, getH3947[H8798] you strawH8401 whereH834 ye can findH4672[H8799] it: yetH3588 not oughtH1697 of your workH5656 shall be diminishedH1639.[H8737] [11]Go ye, yourselves, get for yourselves straw whencesoever ye can find it, for nothing is diminished from your rate.
[12]So the peopleH5971 were scattered abroadH6327[H8686] throughout all the landH776 of EgyptH4714 to gatherH7197[H8780] stubbleH7179 instead of strawH8401. [12]So the people were dispersed in all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble for straw.
[13]And the taskmastersH5065[H8802] hastedH213[H8801] them, sayingH559[H8800], FulfilH3615[H8761] your worksH4639, your dailyH3117 tasksH1697, as when there wasH1961[H8800] strawH8401. [13]and the taskmasters hastened them, saying, Fulfil your regular daily tasks, even as when straw was given you.
[14]And the officersH7860[H8802] of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, which Pharaoh'sH6547 taskmastersH5065[H8802] had setH7760[H8804] over them, were beatenH5221[H8714], and demandedH559[H8800], Wherefore have ye not fulfilledH3615[H8765] your taskH2706 in making brickH3835[H8800] both yesterdayH8543 and to dayH3117, as heretoforeH8032?[H8543] [14]And the accountants of the race of the children of Israel, who were set over them by the masters of Pharao, were scourged, [[and questioned,]]men saying, Why have ye not fulfilled your rates of brick-work as yesterday and the third day, to-day also?
[15]Then the officersH7860[H8802] of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 cameH935[H8799] and criedH6817[H8799] unto PharaohH6547, sayingH559[H8800], Wherefore dealestH6213[H8799] thou thus with thy servantsH5650? [15]And the accountants of the children of Israel went in and cried to Pharao, saying, Why dost thou act thus to thy servants?
[16]There is no strawH8401 givenH5414[H8737] unto thy servantsH5650, and they sayH559[H8802] to us, MakeH6213[H8798] brickH3843: and, behold, thy servantsH5650 are beatenH5221[H8716]; but the faultH2398[H8804] is in thine own peopleH5971. [16]Straw is not given to thy servants, and they tell us to make brick; and behold thy servants have been scourged: thou wilt therefore injure thy people.
[17]But he saidH559[H8799], Ye are idleH7503[H8737], ye are idleH7503[H8737]: therefore ye sayH559[H8802], Let us goH3212[H8799] and do sacrificeH2076[H8799] to the LORDH3068. [17]And he said to them, Ye are idle, ye are idlers: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to our God.
[18]GoH3212[H8798] therefore now, and workH5647[H8798]; for there shall no strawH8401 be givenH5414[H8735] you, yet shall ye deliverH5414[H8799] the taleH8506 of bricksH3843. [18]Now then go and work, for straw shall not be given to you, yet ye shall return the rate of bricks.
[19]And the officersH7860[H8802] of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 did seeH7200[H8799] that they were in evilH7451 case, after it was saidH559[H8800], Ye shall not minishH1639[H8799] ought from your bricksH3843 of your dailyH3117[H3117] taskH1697. [19]And the accountants of the children of Israel saw themselves in an evil plight, men saying, Ye shall not fail to deliver the daily rate of the brick-making.
[20]And they metH6293[H8799] MosesH4872 and AaronH175, who stoodH5324[H8737] in the wayH7125[H8800], as they came forthH3318[H8800] from PharaohH6547: [20]And they met Moses and Aaron coming forth to meet them, as they came forth from Pharao.
[21]And they saidH559[H8799] unto them, The LORDH3068 lookH7200[H8799] upon you, and judgeH8199[H8799]; because ye have made our savourH7381 to be abhorredH887[H8689] in the eyesH5869 of PharaohH6547, and in the eyesH5869 of his servantsH5650, to putH5414[H8800] a swordH2719 in their handH3027 to slayH2026 usH8800. [21]And they said to them, The Lord look upon you and judge you, for ye have made our savour abominable before Pharao, and before his servants, to put a sword into his hands to slay us.
[22]And MosesH4872 returnedH7725[H8799] unto the LORDH3068, and saidH559[H8799], LordH136, wherefore hast thou so evil entreatedH7489[H8689] this peopleH5971? why is it that thou hast sentH7971 meH8804? [22]And Moses turned to the Lord, and said, I pray, Lord, why hast thou afflicted this people? and wherefore hast thou sent me?
[23]For since I cameH935[H8804] to PharaohH6547 to speakH1696[H8763] in thy nameH8034, he hath done evilH7489[H8689] to this peopleH5971; neither hast thou deliveredH5337[H8689] thy peopleH5971 at allH5337.[H8687] [23]For from the time that I went to Pharao to speak in thy name, he has afflicted this people, and thou hast not delivered thy people.
