The Septuagint in English by Brenton
LXX(EN)
Peshitta (Lamsa, 1933)
Pes(Lam)
[1]And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, [1]THE word of the LORD came to me, saying,
[2]Son of man, what mean ye by this parable among the children of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten unripe grapes, and the children's teeth have been set on edge? [2]Son of man, why do you use this proverb in the land of Israel, saying, The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?
[3]As I live, saith the Lord, surely this parable shall no more be spoken in Israel. [3]As I live, says the LORD God, this proverb shall never be used again in Israel.
[4]For all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son, they are mine: the soul that sins, it shall die. [4]Because all souls are mine; the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine; the soul that sins, it shall die.
[5]But the man who shall be just, who executes judgment and righteousness, [5]But if a man be righteous and do justice and righteousness,
[6]who shall not eat upon the mountains, and shall not at all lift up his eyes to the devices of the house of Israel, and shall not defile his neighbor's wife, and shall not draw nigh to her that is removed, [6]And has not eaten the meat sacrificed to idols on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols and the altars of the house of Israel, neither has defiled his neighbor's wife, nor has come near a menstruous woman,
[7]and shall not oppress any man, but shall return the pledge of the debtor, and shall be guilty of no plunder, shall give his bread to the hungry, and clothe the naked; [7]And has not oppressed any man, and has not harmed any one, but has restored to the debtor his pledge; has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;
[8]and shall not lend his money upon usury, and shall not receive usurious increase, and shall turn back his hand from injustice, shall execute righteous judgment between a man and his neighbor, [8]He has not lent money with usury, neither has loaned with a discount; has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, and has executed true judgment between man and man;
[9]and has walked in my commandments and kept mine ordinances, to do them; he is righteous, he shall surely live, saith the Lord. [9]Has walked in my commandments, and has kept my judgments, and has done justice; he who does so is a righteous man and shall surely live, says the LORD God
[10]And if he beget a mischievous son, shedding blood and committing sins, [10]If he begets a son who is a wicked man, a shedder of blood, and he does any one of these evil things,
[11]who has not walked in the way of his righteous father, but has even eaten upon the mountains, and has defiled his neighbor's wife, [11]And eats the meat sacrificed to idols on the mountains, and defiles his neighbor's wife,
[12]and has oppressed the poor and needy, and has committed robbery, and not restored a pledge, and has set his eyes upon idols, has wrought iniquities, [12]Oppresses the poor and needy, extorts from his neighbor, restores not the pledge to its owner, lifts up his eyes to the idols, commits abomination,
[13]has lent upon usury, and taken usurious increase; he shall by no means live: he has wrought all these iniquities; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. [13]Lends money with usury, and takes a discount; shall he then live? He shall not live: because he has done all these evil things; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
[14]And if he beget a son, and the son see all his father's sins which he has wrought, and fear, and not do according to them, [14]But if he begets a son, who sees all the sins that his father had committed, and shall not do likewise,
[15]and if he has not eaten on the mountains, and has not set his eyes on the devices of the house of Israel, and has not defiled his neighbor's wife, [15]And who shall not eat meat sacrificed to the idols on the mountains, neither shall lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; shall defile not his neighbor's wife,
[16]and has not oppressed a man, and has not retained the pledge, nor committed robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has clothed the naked, [16]Oppresses no man, takes no pledge from any one, extorts no one, but shall give his bread to the hungry and cover the naked with a garment;
[17]and has turned back his hand from unrighteousness, has not received interest or usurious increase, has wrought righteousness, and walked in mine ordinances; he shall not die for the iniquities of his father, he shall surely live. [17]Who does not refuse to help the poor, who charges no usury or discount, executes my judgments, and walks in my commandments; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
[18]But if his father grievously afflict, or plunder, he has wrought enmity in the midst of my people, and shall die in his iniquity. [18]As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed and extorted from his brother and did nothing that is good among his people, lo, he is dead in his own sins.
[19]But ye will say, Why has not the son borne the iniquity of the father? Because the son has wrought judgment and mercy, has kept all my statues, and done them, he shall surely live. [19]And if they should say, Why does not the son bear the sins of his father? say to them, Because the son has done that which is lawful and right and has kept all my commandments, he shall surely live.
[20]But the soul that sins shall die: and the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the iniquity of the transgressor shall be upon him. [20]The soul that sins, that soul shall die. The son shall not bear the sins of his father, neither shall the father bear the sins of his son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him
[21]And if the transgressor turn away from all his iniquities which he has committed, and keep all my commandments, and do justice and mercy, he shall surely live, and shall by no means die. [21]But if the wicked will turn from all his sins which he has committed, and keep all my commandments, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
[22]None of his trespasses which he has committed shall be remembers: in his righteousness which he has done he shall live. [22]All his sins which he has committed, they shall not be remembered against him; but in the righteousness which he has done shall he live.
[23]Shall I at all desire death of the sinner, saith the Lord, as I desire that he should turn from his evil way, and live? [23]I have no pleasure in the death of a sinner, says the LORD God; but rather that he should return from his evil ways and live.
[24]But when the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, according to all the transgressions which the transgressor has wrought, none of his righteousness which he has wrought shall be at all remembered: in his trespass wherein he has trespassed, and in his sins wherein he has sinned, in them shall he die. [24]But if the righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity and abominations like those that the sinner has done, all the righteousness that he has done shall not be remembered to him, but in the iniquity which he has committed and in the sins that he has sinned, in them shall he die.
[25]Yet ye have said, The way of the Lord is not straight. Hear now, all the house of Israel; will not my way be straight? Is your way straight? [25]Yet you say, The ways of the LORD are not fair. Hear now, O house of Israel; my ways are fair, but it is your ways that are not fair.
[26]When the righteous turns away from his righteousness and commits a trespass, and dies in the trespass he has committed, he shall even die in it. [26]If a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, in the iniquity that he has committed shall he die.
[27]And when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and shall do judgment and justice, he has kept his soul, [27]But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he has committed and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
[28]and has turned away from all his ungodliness which he has committed: he shall surely live, he shall not die. [28]And if he considers and turns away from all the sins that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
[29]Yet the house of Israel say, The way of the Lord is not right. Is not my way right, O house of Israel? is not your way wrong? [29]Yet the house of Israel says, The ways of the LORD are not fair. O house of Israel, my ways are fair, but it is your ways that are not fair
[30]I will judge you, O house of Israel, saith the Lord, each one according to his way: be converted, and turn from all your ungodliness, and it shall not become to you the punishment of iniquity. [30]Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the LORD God. Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that your sins may not be your ruin.
[31]Cast away from yourselves all your ungodliness wherein ye have sinned against me; and make to yourselves a new heart and a new spirit: for why should ye die, O house of Israel? [31]Cast away from you all the iniquities which you have committed; and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit, so that you may not die, O house of Israel.
[32]For I desire not the death of him that dies, saith the Lord. [32]For I have no pleasure in the death of any one who dies, says the LORD God; wherefore repent and live
